WTF: Don't like Discovery Channel programing? Armed hostage standoff?!?!

I can hardly believe what some people will do.

A guy was protesting discovery channel network's "promotion of overpopulation", by taking 3 people hostage. His issue was specifically with TLC's programming that focuses on reality shows with LARGE families (such as "The Duggar Family, "John and Kate plus 8" and its spin off "Kate plus 8")

"NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis", he wrote.

Best of all, this wasn't his first beef with the network. About 2 years ago he was arrested outside of the network protesting their environmental programming.

Now the guy is dead and all of the hostages escaped safely.

I guess in his own small way, he did his part to help with the overpopulation problem.

The ironic thing is that a lot of BIG families, and maybe one of the things that made it possible and popular, is all the fertility clinics. THEY are supplied by some labratories and drug makers. Maybe the next guy will think a couple steps ahead and hit one of THOSE.

But aren't YOU guys sick of the "reality shows", ESPECIALLY the ones that ideallize something that isn't that great, etc... What is next? Lauratey with eighty on US welfare, in her teens, and living in ethiopia like a queen? Don't be surprised if it happens. OK, MAYBE 80 born to HER will take so long she won't be in her teens. Maybe she'll kidnap them and get them as part of several divorce settlements AND get 10 or so of her own.

    First:

I thought that was in extremely poor taste.

    Second:
    Steve,
I agree 100% with you. Its pathetic that apparently enough people watch that trash that they call reality tv nowadays. Trash tv is the norm for the most part nowadays.
When I am home alone the tv in my house functions best, its turned to the off position.

      First,

Yeah, you're right. I thought so TOO. Something else MUST have gone on! Heck, I just looked it up. He had PAST issues, and a few good points. I think he just handled it in the wrong way, and his tendency was towards violence due to some kind of illness...

Lee repeatedly said he was "ready to die," the police chief said.

"I believe he was not intending to come out of there alive," Manger said.

It wasn't the first time Lee, a homeless man who previously lived in Californian, had targeted Discovery's headquarters. In February 2008, he was charged with disorderly conduct for staging a "Save the Planet Protest." Lee threw fistfuls of cash in the air and paid homeless people to carry signs condemning the network. Police found his pockets stuffed with more than $20,000, according to court records.

Lee served two weeks in jail after his arrest during which doctors evaluated his competency to stand trial. County State's Attorney John McCarthy said Lee was ordered to stay 500 feet away from Discovery headquarters as part of his probation, which ended two weeks ago.

In court and on his website, he had demanded an end to Discovery Communications LLC's shows such as TLC's "Kate Plus 8" and "19 Kids and Counting." He said the network should air "programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility."

"Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what's left of the planet with their false morals and breeding cultures," Lee wrote in a bitter manifesto on his website.

Lee, 43, also objected to Discovery's environmental programming. He wrote in 2008 that a show he called "Planet Green" was "about more PRODUCTS to make MONEY, not actual solutions."
      Second,

Yeah, I wish I could simply throw my TV away. I DID stop watching for 2 YEARS once!

I have to say - I don't view the Dugger family as "trash TV". Even the TLC crews that work with the family have nothing but good to say about them.

Lots of kids (19) - but loads of love and patience. This family was debt free and totally self supporting long before the TV show.

Old fashioned? Yes - but they are raising children who accept responsibility for each other and who expect to do work as part of the family. No temper tantrums, no rude remarks, no parental complaints or yelling.

It's the only reality show I don't categorize as "pure trash".

I stay away from things like that. If they are as good, honest, and clean as you say, GREAT! I LOVE IT! BUT, sadly, they are the EXCEPTION!

        Kay I agree 100%.
That family is incredible and should be put on a pedestal as an example of a good wholesome family.
As for Kate plus 8, well I don't like that show and simply don't watch it.
Apparently many people do watch it though or it wouldn't be on the air.
With cable and satellite TV having over a hundred channels, if a shows on you don't like, don't watch it. Pretty simple as I know you already know and already do

    Kay,
I have never seen the Dugger family show,so I can't comment on them, but if you are correct, they are the exception to the rule.

dannyadmas, wth do you mean "Garbage TV" has a right to be "garbage TV".

Oh, I also looked up the meanings of ingenuous and ingenious and I still don't understand your usage.

Thirdly, I don't see anyone blaimng it on anything.

Never heard of the show or the incident OP is referring to. We have six kids of our own and a grandchild under our roof so I guess we're not helping the overpopulation problem either.

As far as bozo going off the way he did and ending up dead for it I guess you can say karma is an absolute bitch.

Big families are a source of strength not weakness. For instance, when looking for someone to mow the lawn I have several teenagers to choose from not just one. Plus on father's day I make out like a bandit.

Seriously having a large family that all love and care for one another gives more strength to the individuals in that family. More love x more allies = more strength and security.

That's nice. Some large families are mean, have lots of arguments and fistfights, and are psychologically abusive.

HEY, why stop at six? Get 990,000,000! THEN we can see how much of a source of strength it is! .99B is the number of kids that would be born in the US ALONE if there were 100% fertility, and every couple decided to have 6 kids! IMAGINE if every generation did that!

      NOW: ~.33B
      NEXT: ~1.32
      NEXT: ~5.28
NEXT: Well, you get the picture...

SO, in 2 more generations, the US would have almost as many people as are currently on the entire planet.

I'm game but I don't think my wife's uterus could keep up. Those stats are staggering but I just couldn't possibly father so many kids in one lifetime.

I can't find it now, but I'm pretty sure it was in the news the last week or so that the US birth rate is actually in a decline, and has been for the last 10-20 years.

Well, as I said, my stats assumed 100% fertility, etc... AND even with 100% fertility, the chances of a woman conceiving on a particular day are only about 16% or so. Of course, if she is healthy, etc... and the guy is healthy, etc... after about 28 solid days, the chances are about 100%.

And fertility IS dropping! They are starting to question how much longer men will be around because, supposedly, the Y chromosome is getting less and less viable. And there are a LOT of poisons that affect male and female fertility, and fetal development. Of course, once men dissapear, women will dissapear also. With more genetic material, etc... they just aren't so worried about the X chromosome yet.

Still, even at a reduction of 10-20% per year(which I doubt), it is STILL a LOT of people. and people ARE living longer, even if they aren't really living viable lives.

BTW they have fertility treatments that can make women have LITTERS of kids! AND, obviously, some DO that!
