    I'm pretty sure Gareth is in Auckland, which is way up at the top of New Zealand's North Island. Christchurch is in the middle of the South Island (and at the other side, relative to Auckland). I reckon he is about as far away as he can be without leaving the country altogether. I'm sure he still felt it but I'd imagine the damage, if any at all, is probably pretty minor that far north.

      I read somewhere they had some damage on North island but I'm not sure how for North on North Island they had damage....(and I don't think they mentioned North more than once...)
