Calling all mechanics (past/present/future)! I had to put new axle in an Expedition. Prior to getting re-assembled the other side was turned and the spider gears fell out of the carrier.

Does any one know how to get them back in? Is there a special compression tool for the axle gears/clutch plates? Am I stuck taking it to a machine shop and paying them the labor I saved by changing the axle myself?

Have about an hour before I must face this beast again so any taunts/guffaws/giggles and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Fun part of this?---I have two knee replacements and this is all being done at ground level with vehicle on jack-stands. Get up/////get down///get up///get down......

OUCH!!!!

This answer is for rear spider gears and an older expedition, but
it may still be accurate for your car. No compression necessary,
    at least with these.

how to install rear end spider gears : RepairPal

    Here's more from Google:

Also may be able to download a maintenance manual for expeditions:

    Hope this helps.

Thanks....I have tried just rolling them back while carrier is in vehicle to no avail! There is a "washer-shim" on bottom of each that is not allowed to roll back into place.

So now it is off to the wars again----going to pull the carrier out and place it on table to allow me to cuss it face-to-face!

My wife had kindly informed me how lucky I am the weather is nice----usually I try to put this type stuff off until it is dark, snowing and COLD!

I know it will go...I know it will go....I know it will go....I know it will go...what was the ditty about that "little engine"?
