Default What did you do to stop drinking coffee?

Any coffee addicts out there? Probably some. Internet marketing for me is:
Long hours at my computer + lotsa lotsa coffee= zombie feeling and not eating properly.

I am trying to quit, or at least decrease my coffee intake, what did you do to achieve results? Did you stop cold turkey?

I'd rather stop breathing than give up the coffee...

I drink lots and lots of coffee. It is healthy and has lots and lots of Antioxidants. So far, the more I research it, the more it seems wise to continue drinking a lot of coffee. In my case, it is especially wise since I have relatives who died of colon cancer, something which drinking lots of coffee helps prevent (lots, not moderate consumption).

Hi there Lucky500,

If you visit your local health food store, they'll sell jars of coffee substitute.

I don't know if it's available in the US, but the one I drink is called "Bambu" -- somehow, the guys who make it have managed to re-create the taste of coffee without using a single coffee bean...

LOL...I know what you mean...Coffee Coffee Coffee, will we ever get away from it??

I see that I drink water, coffee and soda. I will mix it up though, and I much as I like being online, I have to get offline and get to the store.

This is REALLY REALLY GREAT SOLUTION TO EVERYONE

SMOOTHIES... get bannanas, strawberries, berries, milks, peanut butter, etc, etc

I will go to the gym in the mornings, drink water aftewards, make a smoothie and then take a shower, while it is getting frozen partically, after shower...Go for a smoothie.

Have smoothies,

This is great and taste good.

One more positive plug for coffee:

Coffee – Natural Cancer Cure? « Natural Cure News

And it's great for preventing gall stones, and it's good to help stop or prevent asthma attacks.

Just letting you know, in cause you notice some sluggishness in the liver / gall bladder area, or difficulty with breathing.

Seriously, I've seen that happen.

I guess the biggest thing, is to make sure you eat properly. Sometimes when I drink too much coffee, I will not eat when I should, and the I get mad hungry later on.

Also I do not drink water as much which is pretty bad. I have to force myself to drink water, otherwise I will forget. "I drink lotsa Ice Coffee."

Is it true that if you drink too much coffee, it will mess up your water intake? for instance if you drink a cup of coffee, you will have to drink another 16 oz of water to compensate, because of the caffeine... I don't know, It does not make much sense to me...

Caffiene has a diuretic effect on the body (ie: it makes you pee), so especially in hot weather or if you've been physically active, it can cause some dehydration.

Coffee has both positive and negative effects, and the jury is still out on to what extent it's "good for you" or "bad for you". Also, different people respond to drugs in different ways, depending on their specific biochemistry, other factors in their diet or lifestyle, etc. Coffee could have neutral or beneficial health effects on some people and negative effects on others. The effects likely aren't "one size fits all".

Coffee appears to have some antioxidant properties, but it also raises the level of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the body, and elevated levels of cortisol can have negative effects on the body over time. Also, there are tons of other foods that most people should be eating more of anyway that are loaded with antioxidants (ie: fresh fruits and vegetables), so you can get antioxidants from plenty of other sources than coffee, and improve your overall dietary intake in the process.

As far as quitting, for the past few years, I've gotten into a pattern where I'll drink coffee daily for about a month, then I'll stop. I've found it's MUCH easier to gradually taper back the amount of coffee I drink over the course of a week or so, versus quitting cold turkey. If you quit cold turkey, you go through withdrawal symptoms that can be pretty ugly if your body's used to getting it's fix of coffee every day. If you gradually taper back by drinkng a little less each day until you're down to one cup, and then none, your body has more time to adjust to the transition.

Remember that there's no biological reason for anyone to NEED coffee in order to get through the day. Coffee isn't food, or water, or sleep. Your body doesn't need it to function properly. The only people who feel like they need it are people whose bodies have become dependent on it, and if you gradually wean yourself off of it, you'll find that you can function just fine without it.

There is a biological reason for me to drink coffee. The reason is "me," a biological entity.

Sure, but my statement was that there's no biological reason for anyone to NEED to drink coffee in order to get through the day. You may enjoy it. You may choose to drink it. You may FEEL like you need it in order to function. But you don't NEED it. Human bodies do not require coffee to function properly.

What convinces people that they need it are the temporary feelings of withdrawal they experience if they stop suddenly.

I've got asthma and allergies and I will choose coffee over pharms any day of the week to help control either when riled. Excellent stuff.

No - you might not NEED coffee to survive as in the sense we NEED oxygen to survive but there are very few things you can't say the same about. That doesn't make them any less good for you.

I love coffee. There have been a few coffee threads here. So, I have
not quit drinking it. Don't punch me in the head, please.

Why do you want to quit drinking it?

If you do you'll only replace it with something like exercise, or maybe
water. Hey, you can spend your money on Gucci water!

Forget smoothies, too. They'll kill ya. Besides, what sounds more
manly; "Hey Mack, gimme another Carling." Or... "Hey Mack, gimme
another Smoothie... hey, hey... make it bananas and strawberries."

Coffee is the cup of gogo juice that fires up this great nation and keeps her pumping.
It is the commonality of man that knows no borders and does not discriminate.
It is the thread that binds people of all ages, races, colors, creeds, sex and religion.

We use it as that morning 'crutch' that we need, "don't talk to me until I've had my coffee".
We identify breakfast as being mated to only one beverage (yes even above orange juice), and that is coffee.
We have certain mugs we own at home, for in the car, and at work for coffee.
We use it as a social cohesion, telling distant friends that we need to "catch up over coffee".
We set business appointments and casual dates around 'meeting up for coffee'.
We always save a little room after the dinner plates are being cleared for the inevitable question from the waiter, "would anyone like coffee?"
We dedicate counter space in our kitchen to an appliance that has only one function, make coffee.
We have condiments for our favorite beverage. Creamers, milk, sweeteners. Do you make sure we have any condiments for any other beverage you drink?
I have walked out of my house in the morning forgetting...
my sunglasses, my wallet, my watch, my cell phone, my keys, the garbage, my lunch, that letter I was supposed to mail, the bank deposit.....
but NEVER my travel insulated coffee mug that fits snugly in the cupholder of my car filled with steaming hot coffee.

I am getting a little hankering for a cup 'o joe right now.

Anyone wanna grab a cup of coffee and talk about it?

*********

try this, don't just quit.

Ween off the amazing teet that coffee has provided you, discarding her like an old worn out, but very comfortable shoe.

start mixing decaf into your brew. start at 20% decaf 80% reg. increase decaf and decrease reg over a period of several days to several weeks depending on your habit and your addiction.

this will work and you will not be affected. no, not affected from withdrawal, but from the shame of abandoning the liquid refreshment that has been the one steady, dependable, motivating, social thing in your life, knowing that you are 'unplugging' from the rest of this great country and society as a whole.

What's next, you going to sell off everything to move to Montana to raise ostriches as a food source and live off the land and start crying from seeing 'double rainbows'?

damn hippie.

and people always remember, "friends don't let friends drink starbucks."

good night. i must retire now and rest.
i'll check the thread in the morning for any replies while I am drinking my.....oh never mind.

You're kidding right?

Think of all the antioxidants you would be missing out on. One cup has the equivalent of four fresh squeezed oranges.

If you feel tired, try sleep, it works wonders.

I also love drinking coffee but there are times that I feel I need some substitutes due to health reasons. So there are days that I avoid drinking coffee and substitute it with bubble green tea, vanilla shakes and fruit smoothies. It works for me.

I gave up coffee over 20 years ago.

These days I may use it every few years to stay awake on a job. One strong cup can keep me going after 48 hrs without sleep coz I never drink it normally.

Last time I used it I got muscle cramps in my throat/neck - a very nasty place to get a muscle cramp.

It also acts as a very strong diuretic on me which is what causes the cramps.

So I avoid it.

I suppose it's an espresso v cappuccino answer. How strong is the coffee you drink?

I've always been a big coffee drinker but I have to admit that I have cut down alot lately. If I drink it much past 7pm I won't get too sleep till 3 or 4 in the morning.

What I do now is drink tea when I'm indoors. It's more thirst quenching and also has lots of antioxidants. I don't even buy coffee to keep indoors so the temptation isn't there.

But once a day ( Most days anyhow) I drag myself away from my computer and head down the road to buy myself my daily hit of caffeine. I just sit there and people watch and really enjoy the coffee. It gives me a break from working and when I come back I'm always ready to 'crack on' with my day.

So I consider my coffee as a daily treat and not an addiction. Won't work for everyone but it does for me.

Regards

Started drinking beer.

lol just kidding. But the best way is to pick a healthy addiction do replace a bad one. Chose one that will give your body the same high (like exercise) but in a healthy way.

Then, you will naturally adjust.

The best alternative is probably tea. I tried to stop it before but couldn't do it after a few months.. Breakfast and work is just not the same without it ahh.
