The Cause Of Our Own Destruction

Over in Main Discussion, a respected Warrior celebrated his 1500th post by
sharing some information.

Yes, it was basic...but he offered to answer any questions anybody had and
thus, I had to believe that as the thread progressed, he would have gone
into more detail had somebody asked.

Many thanked him.

But then there were those who just had to come to the thread with the
usual complaints.

"This is basic stuff"
"It's not detailed enough"
"It's useless to newbies because it's just an outline"
"It has no value"

And on and on and on.

So instead of a thread that could have turned into something quite
educational, it turned into a bitching contest and the thread was
ultimately locked.

Why am I not surprised?

It is inevitable that mankind will be the cause of its own destruction.

Not an alien invasion
Not an asteroid from space
Not our sun going nova

Just us...in all our glorious pettiness.

I was watching a show with Les Stroud, the Survivorman guy, where he lives with the tribes with ancient knowledge of living off the land.

These peoples are dying off, and watching the show I couldn't help get the feeling that it seems that as soon as they are all gone, something will happen and we'll need their knowledge again.

This is why I rarely post in the Main any more...

And what gets me madder than anything are the critics that don't add anything to the thread other than being critical...

If the thread doesn't go into detail, why do these "brains" not add some of their details and help people, instead of putting someone's effort down?

If the thread doesn't help noobs, don't moan and groan, add something that does...

Seems simple, except that helping others obviously isn't their real concern, despite their comments, otherwise they would have helped and not bitched.

    Ditto Kurt.
And while I am a bit caustic to what I consider the silly questions that people post here in OT, if I feel they really want and need help, I'll offer what I can,as I think most of us here in OT would.

      Same here.
I still skim the main forum, but very rarely post in it.
      Just ain't worth the hassle.

    Steven,

In the title he called it a "system."

In the post it was an outline.

At the bottom of the post he had a signature selling the complete system (it has since been edited out).

When someone asked for more details in a general way, he answered that his WSO has the whole system (again, this post has since been deleted).

Perhaps the post was locked due to the self-promotional nature rather than the world-ending conflict?

    Just a thought.

Kelly, yes, it's possible you are right. But this is not an isolated incident.

This stuff happens all the time. You know it as well as I do. Heck, Andy
Henry, who gives more to this forum than just about anybody, has had HIS
threads criticized for not giving enough info.

Let's be honest. There are those people who will NEVER be satisfied unless
you hand them everything served on a silver platter garnished with
horse radish and topped off with baked Alaska for dessert.

I bet if I look at my stats I've started less than a handfull of threads outside the OT. There's a reason for that, and I learned it years ago.

There's not a lot in life that you can count on, but one of the things you can take to the bank is that if you start a thread in almost any forum on the internet it's the keyboard equivelent of sticking your Johnson up a hornets nest.

Steven, the Andy Henry example you gave is spot on. I've copied and pasted some of his posts to save for my own education that others have done nothing but complain about. Unbelievable.

You want to flush the RugSuckers out? Simple, just start a thread trying to help point people in a direction, any direction, and they pop their heads out of their tunnels just long enough to show their ignorance and leave a quick stain behind. It's just what they do, and you can count on it like clockwork.

Like I'm telling you something you don't know...

I agree with the sentiment, Steven. I've had enough threads thrashed and derailed through the years that I rarely start one. I can't imagine how often it would happen were I nearly as prolific as Andy (or you).

I'm just saying that in this case, there was more going on than you stated in the OP.

    It's all ok.

I'm more concerned with ____-industrial complexes causing the planet's
destruction than aliens, global warming/cooling, Kurt's awful humor, or
    anything else.

    It's all ok...

Kelly, I can see why the post might be taken the way you say but I think the OP was just trying to show people that it's not difficult and to keep it simple. I could be wrong but having talked to the OP off forum, he seems sincere in what he was trying to do.

Too many people seem to need every little detail laid out for them because they have no initiative to do any research on their own. You see this all over the forum. Most of the time I bite my tongue but I just want to tell them that if they can't Google something on their own, go get a job because they'll never make it in their own business.

I read the post the way he intended. At the time I also saw the stuff I mentioned above. Apparently Moh saw the same thing (or perhaps someone PM'd him), so he later removed the signature and the follow-up.

I'm not saying he did wrong, nor am I saying Steven's OP was off-base (although it is heavy on the drama). I just offered another possible explanation behind the thread being locked.

I have said MANY times that such things WERE done(Offering a kit that contains EVERYTHING so essentially NOTHING has to be done), but they are technically illegal, and fairly worthless, because they limit their own market. Each sale by one buyer means one less sale for the others. And THAT is why frank kern got in trouble for IIE!

I'm sure Kern sold it because he saw it waning, and realized this was another market to hit, to squeeze more income out of the product.

But too many don't realize that.

So the advice you gave above, unfortunately, will ALWAYS be valid. Imagine if walmart could sell each of their stores so that each had the same potential. Some, perhaps even their OWN, would FAIL! And most companies try to limit saturation so they don't compete with themselves.

I must, reluctantly, agree with CurtisN. We should all read a couple Kurt Vonnegut novels (again), to remind ourselves of the immortal words of Kilgore Trout:
"Life... is a crock of s*it."
While very few of us would actually live according to that philosophy, I am thankful to Mr. V. for immortalizing it so succinctly.

This brings me to the topic of YouTube.

The commenter's on Youtube must be the rudest & most negative anywhere online. It really does not matter if your content is good or bad - on Youtube the haters will slam you.

But I must say Steven Wagenheim you really are an idiot for making this post - I mean really how stupid an ass can one be ?

Man kinds destruction - huh ?!?

Why high sodium? Why not high aluminum, etc...? And frankly, I doubt most countries will cause AGW by increasing CO2. The problem is that more creatures need O2, and more plants are destroyed to make room for them. That ALSO means more productivity is needed which increases the cause of pollution!

And lack of exercise won't kill you either. Maybe you won't live as well as long, but you CAN survive.

Reminds me of the time I saw a really old looking guy in the street. He was shuffling along with a walking stick, wheezing, and puffing away on a cigarette.

I went up to him and said that I was amazed that he had got to be such an old guy, because smoking is so bad for one's health.

Get lost! He cried, I'm 37!

And you don't think the cigarettes and other things had ANYTHING to do with it!??!?!?

I GUARANTEE you it was NOT because of a lack of exercise. In fact, exercising while smoking is a bad idea.

BTW one person once told me, I'm not as old as you, I'm only forty. I told him, and HE looked OLDER than 40, that I was only 28! Well, NOW I am in my late 40s! I was SHOCKED by one person saying they thought I was so young. I did a survey of over a dozen people. ALL in different areas, different jobs, etc... There was a CLEAR consensus! You know what it was? THIRTY FIVE! Over a DECADE younger than I am! OH YEAH, do the math! A guy about 20 years ago Thought I was over 12 years older. NOW, about 20 years later they say I am over 10 years younger! Age is SUBJECTIVE! But even with my salted thick mustache, and balding head, they think I am over 10 years younger. They actually think I am younger than a guy a DECADE ago thought I was! I guess I can live with that.

OH, BTW! I WAS exercising back then and I hadn't for YEARS prior to asking the people now. BUT, frankly, my skin was a LITTLE clearer earlier, and my mustache was a pretty solid color, so I think I looked YOUNGER earlier. C'est la vie.
