Schools have a responsibility to protect their students, but when it comes to things like silly bandz and pogs, we wonder just how much protection kids really need.

We found some of the weirdest things schools have banned, and we have to admit we are shocked at what some people consider a threat.

Some of it we understand, like no toy guns or cell phones, but no Cheetos or breast cancer awareness bracelets?

That's crazy talk. Check out all of the bizarre bans and vote for the weirdest!

Here's the slide show...

Home schooling I don't think is such a good idea - all the kids that I've seen that have been home schooled have been "robot like" and not emotionally sound. That said, that's entirely experience - I can think of double digit kids whom when I went to school fit of those stereotypes.

Funny, I have not seen that AT ALL!

And I am GLAD they banned the Hokey-Pokey and the Chicken Dance!!!!!!

But FATHER'S DAY!?!?!? Do you realize that was started by a WOMAN that wanted DADS to have their own day ALSO!?!? So I guess DADS can suffer, but fatherless children CAN'T!

HELL, some of the fatherless children are fatherless because of their MOTHERS!

BTW I had an apple corer once when I was about 7 or so. It was fairly safe, and would have made a LOUSY weapon. Some stupid teacher stole mine while I was cutting an apple. She CLAIMED it was dangerous and she would give it back. She never gave it back. I never forgave her.

BTW why didn't that slideshow talk about the kid that was suspended for wearinga hat that contained some little 1cm high soldier figures?

Maybe you do things differently over there.
Most all home schooled children and in later life adults I've met have been intelligent, well adjusted and socially adapt.
The parents I've talked to put more time and effort into giving their children a well rounded education that schools can't compete with.

    ThomM,

who knows, maybe he is talking about people that STARTED OUT "off", and were thus homeschooled, etc...

One recent winner of the scripps spelling bee seems nice, intelligent, well spoken, but a bit "off" because he has AS! I will add though, again, that that is NOT because of the home schooling. Heck, it turns out there are organizations where all can gather, etc... so even the more "isolated" ones don't have to be isolated.

HECK, *I* wasn't homeschooled, and I am not that social.

A few years back I looked into home schooling my youngest.
A tutor at her school put me in contact with a few parents who home schooled and a couple of adults who where also home schooled.
We never did it because at the time she only had 2 years of high school left. They all told me that at that stage it was to late for her to really get any advantage out of it.

If I ever get into another relationship and have kids again, I won't hesitate to home school them.

    BTW TL,

MAN, you have to really WATCH that site! On one political sideshow I watched there(from the first page of this one) it claimed BEN FRANKLIN was "gay". FUNNY, I never heard that before. He was born about 304 years ago, so who could be SURE! But wikipedia says he, when he was 17, proposed to Deborah Read. Her mother declined. Later, ANOTHER married Deborah, stole her dowry, and ran away. Franklin then married deborah, under common law, since she was technically still married, took in her son, and had 2 others. So he had NOTHING to gain by claiming marriage, he COULD have married another in a higher place, or with a dowry, and he did all you would expect a straight guy to do. And Deborah Read's place in history seems basically 100% tied to ben.

Yet some state almost flat out that they KNOW that what is apparently HIGHLY unlikely is common knowledge.

Haven't seen what you're talking about it but I always thought Franklin was a ladies man for the ages.

We all should be careful about the sites we visit.

There's lots of batsh** crazy stuff going on these days like...

      - claimed beheadings in the Arizona desert

      - planned book burnings

      - head of major cable news channel doing business with North Korea

      - person running for public office falsely claiming he's a spy

      - person running for public office calling for the destruction of Mount Rushmore

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would argue that it most certainly does not.

I can't help but applaud the mere mention of Ben Franklin, regardless of context.
Anyone who has not read his (relatively brief) autobiography is missing out a great book, and one of the greatest motivational books, ever written. I reread it every two years.

Schools are wimpifying the kids. Some schools are banning dodge ball, but there's one where the principal banned any form of touching other students, let alone dodge ball. For tag, they have to step on another kid's shadow.

The sad part is, the principal is sooooooo proud of her idea. Even worse is the kids say they like it. Now it seems even tag is too "physical"...Wimps.

I think all the anti-dodge ball advocates need to be lined up against a wall and we get to throw balls at them for a day. 3 balls for a quarter, proceeds to benefit youth athletics. I'm in for $100.

That is NOTHING! They now have CO "captains", or even let EVERYONE be "captain". Some schools, and COLLEGES, are raising any grade below a to the one above it. Some have pass/fail. It is just NUTS!

Heck, they didn't really have calculators until I was in about the 3rd grade. I don't think they ever allowed us to use them in class. TODAY, they let kids use calculators that are like computers. In fact, last I heard, there was one that was BANNED because it WAS a computer. Well, they have ways to make it look like its little brother that is still considered a calculator. So you don't even have to learn times tables or deal with logs, etc...

Recently, I had to tell a STORE CLERK that 4*200=800(I just got tired of the delay). How much WORSE will it be with the NEXT generation?

They recently built a school here, that is VERY expensive! The state didn't really want to spend the money for it though. They only paid about $40 million, and the other 157Million was paid by other taxpayers like US. The purchases include pools, ipads, libraries, a gym, and even a rock wall! And the kids sound like spoiled brats. One girl said basically "why would ANYONE be upset with the price? Is it because they can't use it?". And to do this at a time when everyone is struggling.... That was for ONE school.

And I imagine they won't learn much, if anything, EITHER!

Your only option is to move where residents vote down school funding tax referendums.

On the bright side, the quality of the school district plays a key role in property values. That will keep the trash out of your community and push out those already there.

Its amazing isnt it how schools always find something new to ban from a school. Each year its always something different. I know when I was in school and they came out with those heely shoes that had wheels built in to a regular shoe they banned it the next day after seeing a friend of mine wearing them.

In my elementary school (this was the 70's) they banned:
    1. makeup (ok, don't want girls to grow up too fast, maybe, I am not sure)
    2. lip balm (because it simulates putting lipstick on???)
    3. bandanas (they were fashionable for a time when I was a kid)
    4. furry boots (!!! no, I am not kidding)
    5. rings
    6. felt pens

This was a public school in Edmonton.

Meanwhile, boys could have pocket knives. And they FORCED everyone to make Christmas cards and do a pageant (Santa Claus visited Baby Jesus along with the three Wise Men, at least one year), even though about 20% were immigrants who didn't celebrate Christmas (mainly Hindus & Muslims, I was a JW so wasn't supposed to do Christmas stuff either). I don't have a problem with them doing the Christmas stuff - just that I and others were forced to do it despite religious issues. We could have done other stuff, or made non-denominational cards during "Christmas Card Creation Time" but no...

Oh yeah, and because my parents were immigrants (I was born in Edmonton) the teachers called me a "DP" (which is short for "displaced person" or unwanted immigrant).

The more I think about it, the more I think that schools and those teachers and such were completely nuts.

Kurt that was funny about wimpifying kids.

Man, if I ever had kids I would home school them just to keep them
away from all that mindrot. I cannot believe all of this. Of course I
do, but it's just so hard to fathom.

A few years ago when I was working at a job, I was talking to this
young girl who sat near me. She was about to enter her freshman
year at Thomas Jefferson University, in Philly, for her nursing degree.

I don't remember why she mentioned it, but she said they did not
require her to submit SAT or ACT scores. That shocked the hell outta
me. She's going to be a nurse.

I read several weeks ago that Harvard University was no longer
requiring final exams for freshman. I think it was just for freshman
classes. But the profs could have them if they wanted to.

Schools suck. They're worthless and teaching kids to be intellectual
duds - but... no one gets offended. Fabulous.

WOW, I think you hit on it! I think I have it figured out!!!!

The schools give kids good grades, so they don't complain. They hope parents won't complain. They can then keep the bad teachers, and stay around!

      Frankly though, that SCARES me!

You're kidding, right? PINK has gotten to be the awareness color for breast cancer, so some places make things in pink, and donate a part of the profit. Bands or ribbons indicate you want to find a cure, etc...

    Waterotter,

I hope you realize I wasn't even calling your breasts idiots, let alone you.

I just thought the term was dumb because of the double entendre.

One comment on one of the sites you point to echos my sentiments:

    Donna 5-17-2010 @ 9:15AM
People are fully aware of breast cancer. I we need a reminder to talk about it, a tasteful reminder, that takes the subject seriously, would be much more fitting.
I love boobies? I'm thinking "Oh I must remember to take this seriously and do my breast exam" isn't a first response. (or second, or third response.) It's not what these are about.
