gas explosion brings back memories

The natural gas explosion in California made me remember a double explosion in Richmond, Indiana back in 1968.

My mother had gone shopping in Richmond that day with several friends and it was hours before I knew she was OK. I was surprised to find coverage of that online and looking at the $$ total damage - I wonder if that number would be billions should that happen today.

Richmond still feels great sorrow over losses, takes pride in recovery

Yes shocking stuff stays with us Kay.

There was a guy on the news that lived 5 doors from where the explosion took place and he was saying although they lost their home the thing he was thankful for was it was 6 pm and he and is wife and two daughters were all sitting down to dinner when it happened - they were all together.

He stressed that had they been some home some on their way, etc, that it would have been 100 times worse not knowing everyone was safe.

Man it was a real bummer and it is a miracle more were not killed - there was absolutely no warning.

Here are some pictures although now it is up to 4 are dead.

Pat - I was sitting at the top of a hill at sunset last night just E. of Copperopolis - and the sky out toward SF was deep blood red. I've never seen a sky that color of red before. It was beautiful, but it was ominous, too.

    Wow, Sal. Amazing.

I am only 45 miles or so from San Bruno but at sea level so I couldn't see anything in the sky from here.

Not that I really looked, though. It was pretty late at night before I even found out about it while channel surfing...

    Pretty freaking scary stuff...
