Question for your avid fishermen...

Let's say you were putting together a basic survival kit for the outdoors and you could only pack one lure, which would it be?

You don't know if it will be for fresh/salt water, lake, stream, ocean. The only thing you know is it won't be for deep sea, since it's for a survival kit.

I was thinking something like a minnow would be best.

Any experts, what would you take if your life depended on it, but didn't know what kind of fishing you may be doing? Or, are there two lures that may cover "everything"? A lure and a couple of flies? A lure, a fake worm and a fly?

Anything illegal in a lot of places that could get me in trouble?

Size matters and can't be perishable.

Thanks.

A Mojo and a fake crawdad. Or a mojo and a spoon.

    Licorice candy.

A fake big mac and fake fries.

PS - Kurt, why am I not surprised to hear you say size matters?

I would include hooks and black thread for tying my own flies. Wouldn't be easy without a tying kit but could be done. And finding feathers, fur and other items to use would be easy enough.

Assuming you remembered to include some fishing line in that survival kit

It would have to be some type of all metal silver spoon. You can catch some type of fish just about anywhere with it and you don't have to worry about it being destroyed like you would with any type of soft plastic like a worn or grub.

If you HAVE to have a lure, I agree with a small spoon. However, the problem is that in most places, the size of the fish that you're likely to catch will be on the small side (small panfish like brown trout, etc.). If you bring a lure to catch them, the small lure size will limit your chances at something bigger if you're lucky enough to be in such an area.

Like Thom said, I'd opt for a couple of stainless steel hooks - one small and one larger. That's exactly what I have in my survival kit. I also carry a folded piece of aluminum foil, so I could make a flashy lure if needed.

The real truth is that fishing is a morale builder rather than a real survival technique. In the sort term, food is the least important item. Over a few weeks, there are much easier foods to gather than fish (conserve your energy). Over a few months, you'll run into problems due to the limited fat intake if you eat all fish (unless you're lucky enough to be able to catch fatty fish like Salmon in your survival situation).

One other note: The rubber tails will degrade over time. Steel will rust. That's why my hooks are stainless...

But what if the survival fishing kit was for a life boat? Fish could be the only source of fresh "water". And you can't use live bait until you catch something.

I've found a lot of survival advice doesn't take into account surviving in a life boat. I do have some life boat training (certified by the US Coast Guard)...

True, but I was answering your OP:

          Hey Kelly,

I may have use the wrong terms, I don't consider life boat fishing as "deep sea" since the actual fishing in a lifeboat is at the surface...I don't think we'll be catching marlin with a hook and foil and 10 ft of line.

Also, a life boat survival kit should have something incase you find land and may need to saltwater fish from shore, or even fresh water fish.
