And what do they do with it?

There must be billions of dollars spent on domain names every year. Yet you never here where that money goes or what it is used for. Scary!

Not really! Last I knew, for .com and .net and this USED to be true for ,org and .edu, MOST of the money, if you pay less than about 12 dollars, goes to VERISIGN!!!!!! It doesn't matter if you buy the domain from some company in the deepest regions of africa, and NEVER heard of verisign!

As much as about a dollar goes to icann. Almost all the rest goes to the company you bought the domain name from, at least for BIG companies like godaddy or tucows. For LITTLE companies, that use companies like godaddy or enom, a fair amount goes to THEIR gateway and they keep the rest.

BTW verisign DOES have to maintain the servers, enforce rules from others, and probably pay a hefty licensing fee. But only THEY know the full details THERE.

Thunderbird: Quick - how do I become a registrar???

Seriously, don't the registrars have to 'Pay the Piper' as well? If not, lets all abandon our Internet Marketing efforts - NOW - and become registrars!

What I want to know is who are the 'Pipers' - how much do they get paid, and what t'heck do they do will all the money.

      Here's the current "Financial Considerations" for becoming a registrar . . .

ICANN | Registrar Accreditation: Financial Considerations

Consider the money people pay for "Big Macs", "Coke" - in fact any product for sale . . . . where does all the money go from there - it's just business after all

And if you are still serious about breaking into the market - take a look at the current competition . . . http://www.webhosting.info/registrar...strars/global/
