I was just reading about the earliest signs of autism (Early Signs of Autism)

-- not smiling by six months of age
-- not babbling, pointing or using other gestures by 12 months
-- not using single words by age 16 months
-- not using two word phrases by 24 months
-- having a regression in development, with any loss of language or social skills

So far my 5-month old baby's milestones are all great. He does everything listed, except use word phrases. This is a huge relief for me, since I displayed some of those symptoms as a child (I didn't start talking until I was 4 years old. No child prodigy I).

That said, sometimes autism and regression sets in at 2 or 3 years old or even later.

Most autism claims I have heard of at 2, etc... REALLY look like CDD!!!!

AND, autism's definition has been broadened a LOT!

My elder daughter was first suspected of being autistic at 2 years 3 months. But even then, the diagnosis is autistic tendency rather than autism because it could be confused with a lot of other childhood conditions. You cannot really make a firm diagnosis for at least a few years. She was normal until 12 months, the only unusal thing we noticed was that the "crawling stage" was completely absent. She learnt to walk from sitting straightway and there was no delay.

There was definitely some delay in language ability after 1 year but again this really could only be picked up by experts. But by the time she was two, she did seemed withdrawn and unsociable. There was clear and marked deterioration here.

Looking back, I don't think earlier diagnosis would have made any difference. The treatment we gave her could have made things worse. Our consolation is that our younger daughter is normal. However, we are faced with lots of behavorial problems, none in doubt caused by jealousy towards her older sister.

As I understand it, autism is an umbrella term covering myriad not fully understood disorders. I am certainly not professionally (or even unprofessionally) trained in medicine to feel qualified to state what role, if any, vaccines play in the onset of autism.

We opted not to get the swine flu vaccine while my wife was pregnant, due to anecdotal evidence of its apparent dangers, namely miscarriages taking place right after receiving the vaccine. From my vantage point -- one of ignorance -- I definitely believe preservatives used in the vaccines, such as Thimerosal (mercury, illegal for use in vaccines in many countries) and formaldehyde must cause some harm. That said, we did get our baby vaccinated at 2 and 4 months as the public health office in our region advised, since the diseases they prevent can be very dangerous to young children.

The news brings up contradictory findings regarding any possible link between autism and vaccines (Family wins battle with Pharmaceutical companies over vaccines | Fromtheold, http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/728703). I suspect that it could be something like a genetic predisposition to autism being triggered by environmental factors (like a huge percentage of diseases). Again, I don't know. Maybe you do.

While there are some theories that state this, there has been nothing proven. On the other hand, some forms of autism are hereditary and that has been proven.

I hate seeing this vaccine scare being bandied about because it's leading to people not vaccinating their children out of fear and now we're beginning to see polio and measles coming back.

The problem with this theory is that it is USUALLY used to explain aqnecdotes that are more properly CDD!!!!! I think most mothers DON'T get the shot, and babies don't until AFTER 6 months. PROFOUNDLY or even moderately autistic kids may begin showing symptoms BEFORE they are 6 months!

Of course, CDD generally happens around 2years or later.

Apparently kids are BORN with autism, and symptoms show accordingly.

Apparently CDD is due to aggressive synapse pruning that happens around 2 and they generally appear NORMAL before then!

BTW pruning NORMALLY happens around 2,8,and 13, but is less aggressive. And, obviously, pruning at earlier ages is more dangerous because what is left is the basis for future growth.
