Anyone have an idea for a FREE program that will recover hard drive after crash?

I have a hard drive showing 0...when I use download demo for recovery program it does come up with recovered files---however I would prefer to not have to pay $70.00 or more for the use of the program.

    Gordon,
If the data is important, spend the money. Its not free but when I had my shop I used this:
    GRC|SpinRite 5.0 to 6.0

I did not have 100% recovery rate, but it still worked pretty good and worked when others did not.
One caveat, On some drives it van take forever to run. I think they longest I ran it was over a week 24/7 and it still did not finish running.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you find and use.

Cheapest way to recover a hard drive is to report the computer to the State Police or FBI as containing illegal information.
They fix that baby right up!
Seriously, I'd talk to a college kid. They probably have the best, free ways to do that.

Yea I know...this drive has been acting up for a few weeks and had been planning on transfer to new one. Not exactly full of world class finances but does have quite a bit of marketing stuff on it.

I'm just cheap and continually think I can outsmart the 00001111's of the computer world whenever I want. Only paid $20.00 for the computer and have been patching it together for a few years now. Time to unzip the old change purse!

Ouch...my FBI file is thick enough as it is---don't really want to invite storm troopers to this party!

I think there is none. Try to look at torrents maybe you'll find something there.

But for my perspective I think it's always paid when recovering a hard drive, cause its hard work. I think you should look for cheaper solutions.

What do you see in your hard drive? blue screens after loading? or No system disk present?

I recently tried RECUVA with no sucess, but it won't hurt for you to try it,other than you really want to minimize using a failed HD because you can corrupt the data even more trying all the different things.
RECUVA is made by the same people that make CCleaner.

Download a free linux like knoppix or ubuntu and burn it to CD.
You can request a cd or buy one ready made for little money.

Boot from the CD and let it run in live mode.
When the desktop has finished loading, you should see
your Hard drive showing up on the desktop screen as
hda 1 or similar. Then mount/explore the drive and
copy any of your files found to an external drive or
      usb memory stick.

      Works for some folks

Guess I wasn't really clear on how this appeared. The hard drive IS showing and under device manager is shown as operating properly.

The problem was that the "H" name designation somehow corrupted and now shows HDD as "disk 0". Also shows 160 gb as "unallocated" ---i.e. wiped clean.

I have been able to get it renamed properly and scanned with RecoverMyFiles V4.6.6-----scanning the drive it shows just about the amount of files I had on the drive as recoverable. Now I have to decide if that info is worth the $70.00 to get back those files. What the heck---disability check showed up this morning so I feel almost rich for a day or two!

Easy dude, download a FREE software application called RECUVA from filehippo.com

Tried Recuva and it was unable to access the drive.

I have Ubuntu CD and just might try this. However I agree with Kim that too many attempts might corrupt those files I am able to regain. My best bet is to pay the $$$---recover the files and get rid of this hard drive.

Thanks all...off to have more fun!

      thunderbird,

Have you ever tried using this program to resurrect old hard drives you have removed from dead computers?

I have a HD I took out of an older computer that I've been saving for such time that I can find a program to recoup the files. I also have a SATA/USB cable to run the old HD externally.

      Any experience with that?

      TIA

        Hi, Bill

Yes, I've used it to recover lost files, but ones that I had deleted. It worked for my purposes.

For an old hard drive, using an external hard drive case would be the way to go, as I see you're doing. The program might help you recover files that don't show up.

Avira, as well as RECUVA both had same problem.....this hard drive is not formatted so they did not recognize it.

I used Recover My Files ($$$) and effected recovery. Only problem is the program recovered 330 gb of files----this is only a 160 gb hard drive! Guess it also pulled all of the files I had deleted through the years back up.

So now I am going to transfer them to an external, get rid of what I don't need and save what I was looking for.

All because I am too cheap to buy a new computer---this one cost me $20.00 about three years ago and was sitting on a garage shelf at that time! You definitely get what you pay for.

      Essentially...problem solved

Great! Happy you worked it out. Yep, programs have their limitations, not one size fits all. Avira Unerase (which is a discontinued but available free product) works for recovering deleted files from formatted hard drives, but I'm not really sure how well it does for files lost in other ways (probably not too well).
