The one kid was close with the cauliflower:rolleyes:
He called it broccoli which is Brassica oleracea italica
      While cauliflower isBrassica oleracea botrytis
Both of which are off shoots of wild cabbage which is Brassica oleracea. Cultivated cabbage is Brassica oleracea var. capitata.
Also I bet he would of had different results if the school he went to was in the country.
Still it's sad when kids don't know what fresh veggies and fruits look like.

each spring and fall I take my boys to the garden center and we pick out some seeds - vegetables and other items. We come home and I have them plant them in some raised beds in our yard. It is totally against the yard Nazi's rules for our subdivision (I can plant flowers but NOT vegetables!!!!). I am willing to take their wrath (letters, fines, and of course having them call me names - ouch!) BUT its worth it to teach my kids that food does NOT come from a grocery store or a restaurant. Someone, somewhere has to grow it.

Now I've not taken this to the point of tagging one of the deers that walk through our natural area between our sub division and the sub division next to us and then dressing the deer in the back yard. For that I'm willing to the grocery store and try to explain where meat comes from without a lot of graphic details ;-)

You can always go fishing, gut and clean the fish, cook it, serve it to them and show them how deer and cattle are prepared in a similar way.

        Steve,
had my dad - their papaw - do this a while back. Personally - I hate fishing and fish. I do take my kids fishing on the Inter coastal waterway each summer when we go to the beach, but I'm not a fish person. Which is a pain since my wife and her whole family love sea food.

      Steve,
Not gonna find any lettuce/tomato on a happy meal burger...

(my son has only recently started eating the occasional burger...the kid never liked meat - if we ever got a fastfood burger, he wanted the bun with the slice of cheese and nothing else)

Yeah, I would venture to say there was nothing named "Happy Meal" when we were kids. I had 6 brothers and sisters so like Thom, I was happy to get any meal.
