What is a good Dog name?

We are hopefully getting a new puppy soon and it will most likely be a male. So we are thinking of names at the moment and I've gone blank - I just can't think of anything.

My husband likes the name 'Griffin' but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

We will be getting a Rhodesian Ridgeback so need a nice strong name that would suit a big dog.

Any suggestions?

Uhh. Talk the ole man outta the name, Griffin. It's kinda like the
kid in school who gets his a@@ beat every day and his lunch
money taken. If you know what I mean. (wink wink lol)

I'd suggest googling for male dog names. I could write a hundred
of them, and you might not like any.

I wanted to call our German Shepherd cupcake but my wife wouldn't let me as it is her dog. I always had a vision of calling cupcake from a distance and people being scared out of their wits when this German Shepherd comes charging at them.

Naturally she would only have licked them but they wouldn't have known that.

Cupcake for a German Shepherd - couldn't imagine that one. Calling 'cupcake come' in the park

Rover is ok but a bit too common

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law had a female dog called Angus because they thought she was a boy when they first got her. Got use to it after a while!

Max is a cool name, although my friends dogs called Max. He's a Ridgeback X

Some comedian had a short sketch about naming his dog Harry/Hairy, "because he was." For some reason, that's stuck with me and I've had a dream of having a dog named Harry/Hairy some day.

That's such a tricky one since the personality of a dog can tend to influence their name... how about Leo or Leonardo (since they were bred for lion hunting)... For some reason I always get a kick out of regular sounding names for a pet... a neighbor had a pet cat named Kevin... somehow i just thought that was the coolest thing ever.

    Good luck!

Years ago my Dad got a black Great Dane. While he was busy trying to think up fancy names I decided that Boris was a good name. So I started to call the dog Boris and so did everyone else. My Dad was furious but the name stuck. It started off as big bad Boris but although he was very big he was in no way bad. Imagine a Great Dane that sits on your knee (very difficult to see the TV). In fact he was the sweetest natured dog we ever had, and we had a lot over the years. Twenty years on I still miss him sometimes.
In short, Boris is may favourite name for a big dog. And Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very like Great Danes. So that is my suggestion for your puppy.

Hey Sheryl, just something to keep in mind............a general rule of thumb is to give your dog a name with two syllables, or less. I would need to write an ebook explaining this LOL.

Have fun picking a name for your future pup!
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2647196].message }}

Two syllables is best - but also important to have a "hard" letter in the name as it makes the word more recognizable to the animal. If the name begins with a hard letter, one syllable will work fine.

My method of naming my animals - and we're talking a lot animals over the years - is to first get the pet...and then get the name. Within 24 hrs of getting a new dog - you'll have no problem naming him. Just works that way.

Every dog has little idiosyncrasies that quickly become apparent - and often on the way home from picking up the little guy, the right name will come to you.

I brought home an abandoned, abused dog one night - hadn't even thought of a name yet. Telling my son over the phone I had rescued another dog (I had three dogs at the time) - I quickly said "I know - I don't need another dog". My son's answer was "well, Doodah" and I said - yep, that his name.

Ten years later, still have Doodah and the name suits him.

Gracie was close to death as a puppy when I took her - "saving gracie" came to mind.

My best friend Wrex was with me for almost 13 years - my son wanted to call him "Rex" - and having lost a couple shoes and a rug in the first 24 hours with the German Shepherd puppy, I suggested "Wrecks" - so we compromised.

Have some ideas for potential names - but get the dog and you'll be able to choose a name that fits him.

        kay

I'm currently baby sitting a Jack Russel - his owner original named him DOG - cute! She later felt bad about the name as he is such a cool little guy - so now she spells it Diogi

I always wanted a Great Dane - but just a little bit too big. Ridgebacks are big enough. Yes I could imagine one sitting on your lap, they are big sooks. Our last Ridgeback owned the sofa and if we were sitting on it he would try to sqeeze in even if it meant sitting across our laps.

I think the bigger the dog, the bigger sooks that they are.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have added a few of them to my list. I think you have a good point Dave that perhaps when we see him we will know.

Indy is a good one - we have a budgie who's name is Jazz and middle name Henry - after Indiana Jones - turned out Jazz is a girl though

I can relate to the Boris name thing too - we had a Cocker Spaniel many years ago and when we first got him we couldn't think of a name and spent the first couple of weeks just calling him puppy. In the end we chose 'Toby' because we had called him puppy for so long we had to choose something that sounded a little similar to 'puppy'.

Now seriously, Kay is right about only choosing the dog's name after a few days of having him. You might even chose a name that is related with some characteristic of his body - it happened with me when I chose my dog's name.

Now judging from what Wikipedia says about Rhodesian Ridgeback's temperament... you're going to have some work

      Carlos

P.S. As Rhodesian Ridgeback is known for its bravery... how about Bravex. I know, I told you to choose after a few days, but with this one you can't go wrong

We've had a Ridgeback before, he passed away a couple of months ago. He was a great dog and not much work at all, he had the best termperament every.

However, I know they are bred for hunting lions and you would think they would be brave - our Ridgeback was such a wuss, he was scared at everything. If the kids had balloons or cap guns he would spend the day following me around trying to hide behind me. Such a big wuss he was!

Name it "Diogi." That's an Italian name. It's pronounced D.O.G. I think that's hysterical.

I had a girlfriend who named her dog "Guess." People would say "What's your dog's name?" and she'd say "Guess." Then they'd go "Um, I don't know, Rover? Fido? Spot?" and she'd just laugh like hell.

I've always wanted to get a dachshund and name it "Wiener." Then I could ask people if they'd seen my wiener. "I'm taking my Wiener for a walk." "Pardon me, I have to let my Wiener out." "We got my Wiener fixed."
