    Oh, nothing's different!

    NOTHING AT ALL!

    EXCEPT:

Linux is based on a system that is over 40years old that is used by IBM, HP, SUN, TERADATA,NETEZZA, APPLE, etc...
    Linux is more stable.
    Linux is POSIX compatible.
    Linux is 100% preemptive.
    Linux isolates processes.
    Linux is more secure.
Microsoft must be SCARED about linux, because they tried running fallacious smear campaigns.

Oh well, there are probably a few hundred or thousand other things I could mention, but I'll stop here.

And my favorite thing about Linux is how easy it is for a guy like me to find tons and tons of programs that I use on a regular basis, like....

    Hold on....

    Um...

    Uh....

Oh, thats right. I have absolutely no idea what programs can be run on a Linux PC. I'm sure some techy who really 'gets' linux boxes will school me on what programs are out there and how cheap they are.

But, the bottom line is when it comes down to it, I am the epitome of Ignorance and Apathy.

    I don't know and I dont care.

WOW, you really ARE the epitome! OK, I won't even try to whet your appetite. It IS ironic since almost all the stuff you are looking at NOW was developed on a unix or linux system and available there FIRST. OH WELL...

    Ironic?

Is it ironic that George Seldon patented the first automobile, but we all drive (insert any automobile maker's name here)?

As for everything that I am looking at now, that isn't quite a fair statement. Because, if I understand you correctly, you are referring to web-based "stuff". If we are talking web, then I am 100% linux/unix. I personally wont touch the microsoft based hosting/tools (bad exerience).

Since the OP never stated online vs desktop, I did make the clarification about this being in regards to a PC.

Now, with all that said, please whet my appetite. I am in the market to buy a new computer in the next 60 days, so tell me why I should look at a Linux based system, where I can get one, where I can get support, what programs I can use and how I can do all this without a steep learning curve.

By the way, since it is incredibly hard to discern tone from a post, that is not at all confrontational or challenging. It sounds like I am being too closed minded and am open to what I am missing.

So I will shift from "ignorance and apathy" to "ignorance and borderline interest". See, I am maturing!

OK, I HATE this! I checked out george seldon. From what I understand about the old method of patents, his patent was *****NEVER***** valid! ALSO, if not for an old trick, that was used to scam so much that it is no longer allowed, he NEVER patented it! He was NEVER awarded a valid patent!

FORD realized that, and 16 years after sheldon was "awarded" his INVALID patent it was declared INVALID, and the courts ordered him to STOP collecting royalties!

      HERE is the time line....

1873... Benz perfects an internal combustion engine with the goal to create a car.
      1873+? Benz works on car
1877 Selden(A PATENT ATTORNEY, SURPRISE(SARC)) files an INCOMPLETE patent under the old terms to LOCK IN the award! The idea is to PERFECT a patent, clean it up, add new details, NOT to materially change the basis!
1881 Benz starts a company to sell cars
1885 Benz actually starts selling cars
1886 Benz gets a patent on the car!
1895 seldens is "awarded" a patent on the car, even though it really IS missing one *****IMPORTANT***** piece!
1904 Selden takes ford to court
1911 Judge orders THE MISSING PIECE! A WORKING CAR built to seldon's specs! IT FAILED! The judge basically ruled it FRAUD!

Heck, the diagram is overly complicated, etc... ESPECIALLY since he had mercedes to base it on, why didn't he go the simpler route?

Well, at least now I know this type of garbage has been going on longer than I thought.

      BTW more food for thought!

And the Mac crowd is just self-righteous.
<throws blanket over desk to hide Mac Mini>

Just my 2 pence: I tried out Ubuntu Linux version 10 on the computer at my former job -- a 1.5GHz XP box -- by booting from a 'live CD' and was genuinely amazed by how smooth it was, how quickly it self-detected the network and broadband connections and how useful the bundled software is.

If you have no experience of Linux, then all it takes to try it out is:
      • download the disk image (about 650Mbytes)
      • burn it to a CD-R
      • re-boot your PC with the optical drive selected as your primary boot device
The data on your HDD will be completely unaffected. Total time: an hour or two. Total cost: the price of a CD-R.

    Again with the either/or...

Just use the right tool for the right job. Sometimes its Linux, sometimes its Windoz. And every once in a great while a Mac.

Desktop vs server vs embedded systems - different projects will require different software.

Except for editors, all software niche have multiple implementations depending on the job. (except for editors - obviously we all know emacs is the only true editor).
