      Well, there HAVE been a NUMBER of mediums where a grindstone may be used to finish work in metal, jewelry, clay, etc... HECK, even WOOD has sanders. Which are almost like a grindstone. When you are done with the big, and relatively easy stuff, you may have a lot of time close to the wheel finishing things. It may even look like your NOSE is on the grind stone.

      BTW OBVIOUSLY grindstones are usually just called grinders today. If it is used to sharpen, it may be called a sharpening stone. The method and basic idea is the same, a stone like object used to grind away impurities or shape things.

      And that requires effort and time.
