Yeah, sure they close because of Lincoln and Washington, too, but those lightweights had to combine their stupid birthdays just to get a holiday.
WHERE IS THAT!?!?!? They certainly do NOT mean the US! They *****BOTH***** had holidays! The TRUTH is that, after they decided to drop lincoln to satisfy the MLK crowd, they renamed washington's birthday as presidents day. STILL, with the new york civil service, for one... "The State has designated Lincoln's Birthday as a floating holiday in 2010 for State employees in certain bargaining units."!

      Steve,

If President Nixon is the one most responsible for combining the February birthdays of two of our most beloved presidents ( Washington & Lincoln ) into one federal holiday, ...

...way back in 1971... ( anyone can google "president day history" for background )

      ... then... ( help me understand )

...how is it possible that the "MLK crowd" is responsible for President Lincoln getting dissed in any way, shape or form?????

The MLK holiday bill was passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed into law on November 2, 1983 and is in January.

The first national celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday took place January 20, 1986.

      Help me with your timeline.

Either this is another one of your "contract hits" or you...

... ( once again ) simply don't know what you're talking about and are parroting what you've heard from another - without any fact checking.

Interesting though, some presidents day sites don't make the distinction and say it always was. OTHERS, like this one Holidays: Lincoln's Birthday in United States claim that lincoln's birthday was STILL recognized in California as late as 2009. Well, not towards the END of the time I was in school in california. They said there were not enough days to have another holiday and meet requirements, so lincolns birthday vanished, and washingtons became presidents day. At least where I was I never heard of presidents day prior to that.

I guess my only mistake is that apparently, according to these places, it was only in some states, etc...

And I certainly was NOT parroting what I have heard from another. Still, even 1968 or 1971, etc... would indicate that they did for a time EACH have their own holidays.

You could swear on everything you hold dear and you would still be wrong.

WOW, you must have been polling every second, I don't know if that was up even a minute.

But HEY, the LAUSD is known for being pretty "proactive" on such things. Look at THIS! Los Angeles school board approves Cesar Chavez Day | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times If I recall wrong, ok I recall wrong. I'm pretty sure that is how it all happened though, at least where I was.

As for the rest? POT MEET KETTLE!

Steve...Try to stay focused. You can do it.

      Today is Columbus Day.

      The OP is about COLUMBUS.

You need to stop using every thread as your own personal platform to express your political and social agenda.

      Take a deep breath.

      Hold it for three seconds.

      Breath out fully.

      Now Focus on COLUMBUS.

      COLUMBUS.

      COLUMBUS.

      COLUMBUS.
