Fact: Aussies twice as good as Poms!

The recently completed commonwealth games had Australia on top of the medals table with 74 gold medals and England with 37!

Given that the population of Australia is about 22 million and that of England over 50 million, that really makes us about 4.5 times better if we calculate on a per capita basis, but I don't want to be too hard on the poor poms.

And what about Canada? Don't they play sports there? A mere 26 gold medals! And they have a 50% larger population than Australia.

Maybe the miserable weather in those countries keeps everyone indoors.

I would say the real winner is India. It could mark the moment when they really wake up and take off. Just like China at the 1984 olympics.

Ron, when I was at school I can distinctly remember being told during morning assembly that "Winning doesn't matter. It's taking part that counts." This was drilled into us kids on more than one occasion.

At the time, this was probably said with good intentions, so that less athletic kids didn't feel worthless.

But I've a funny feeling that it's something that would never have been said in an Australian school...
