backing up my files

Hi fellow warriors, I just wanted to know if you can use your web host to back up your most important files from my pc like "My documents" ect..? I use host gator. Thanks

    Do you mean that you'd FTP the files from your computer using an FTP software like FileZilla and store them on the server? Because I should think you'd be able to upload them just like any other file you'd upload to your website.

    However, I might also recommend a backup service like Mozy. I've used them before, and it's pretty easy to make a backup of your files. You create an account with a (complex) password where you can store your files and retrieve them when/if you lose them or they get corrupted.

      Yes I would use either Hostgators ftp (file manager) or FileZilla for the transfer.

      Thanks for the advice. I was just looking at one cost solution to this and since I'm paying HostGator a monthly fee, I thought I would try to use them. I just started IM, so I'm pinching pennies at the moment.

    You could do that as extra protection, but I wouldn't use that as your only means of backing up important stuff.

    Mozy is great, and you could also get an external drive.

      External drives are another good choice. I wouldn't trust my only backup to a server on Hostgator.

      You can also make data CD and DVD backups of photos and music, if you have a lot of those on your computer.
