What kind of site are you aiming to create? In the beginning, I'd suggest just keep it simple and use the default wordpress 3 theme (Twenty Ten). Then learn how to create "child themes" of it. Before you learn how to create a child them, start with premade child themes. You activate the child theme. There are some sites with twenty ten child themes. Here's one that looks promising (I haven't tried it):
Twenty Ten Weaver | Wordpress Weaver

Why child themes? Child themes customize the main theme, but you can update the main theme (not child theme) whenever wordpress is updated without losing the customized formatting of the child themes.

    Hi bixlergrp,

If you are new, then stick with the Twenty Ten theme is easy to work with. I would also suggest trying to install the theme Wordpress weaver it will give you more options and its fun to play with.

Oh and I agree with Thunderbird - keep it simple.
