Snap Quiz...Let's See How Smart You Are

The purpose of this thread is to try to get some of you people to stop
thinking like Internet marketers and start thinking like the actual people
you're looking to reach with your marketing.

We all know keyword research is critical to success. But too many of you
get hung up on number of searches and competition and actually forget
about keyword quality.

So here is a snap quiz and a bit of an exercise to get you thinking like a
prospect and NOT like a marketer.

Here's the scenario.

You're an alcoholic. No, you're a teenage alcoholic. That's bad on so many
levels. For one thing, you're probably too young to be drinking legally so
you could get yourself and a lot of other people in trouble if it leaked out
to the wrong agencies that you've been drinking and that your parents
have enabled you to boot. Or maybe they don't know but they suspect.

Okay, here's your snap quiz.

What would you type into Google, if you're a teenage alcoholic, and you're
looking for some kind of treatment so you can stop drinking?

Also, what would you type into Google if you're the parent of a teenage
alcoholic and suspect your kid is drinking and you want to find help for
him or her?

I'm not going to give you the answers...yet.

I want you to think this through on your own and post your answers here
with explanations as to WHY you chose those keywords.

I'm trying to get you into the minds of these people. That is the only way
you're going to TRULY understand how to target a market...any market.

Yeah Will, I'm trying to get you to do my keyword research for me. Shame
on me for being so terribly transparent.

      100 times.

        Teenager:
don't get caught drinking / drink without getting caught ?
        hide my drinking
        be happy without drinking
        reasons not to drink

Why? You know you have a problem, but you don't want to get caught while trying to fix it.
You might need o convince yourself that drinking is bad, so you google that.

        Just guessing :-)

Looking for treatment you would probably type in something like:

"am I drinking too much" or "how can I stop drinking" or "where can I get help to stop drinking"

I'm hoping the point you are trying to make is that people don't
      a) think in "key words" or
      b) categorise themselves

I had a long conversation with a contact/student in Germany last night. I don't think she's a member of this forum, but I won't give too many details anyway.

      She had registered a website - hotels4specificgroupofpeople.com

I asked her how she was intending to drive traffic to the site. It turned out that she hadn't thought about it.

I headed for the google keyword tool and found that no-one anywhere is searching for "hotels for specific group of people". In fact the term she was using appears to be used in the US but not in Europe - and Europe is her target market.

She was totally fixed on aiming her site at "specific group of people" - despite the fact that no-one uses this term to search or identifies as a member of this group.

There is not going to be any right answer.

Of course there will be differences in the way a teenage and a parent word their searches, but still the search phrases they use will be all over the board.

    Parents:

how can I get my son/daughter to stop drinking
    alcohol abuse clinics in ______

    Teen:

what will my friends say if I quit drinking?
alcohol treatment without telling my parents

Are those going to get any high numbers in searches? Probably not. Are they ideas I'd want to build a campaign around? Probably.

Love your question, Steven. I see so many people getting caught up in phrases, not ideas.

    Steve,

Being as old as I am its difficult to think like a teenager, although my wife said I have never grown up. But I'll give it a try.

I believe most teenagers know how to do searches, but will be fairly unsophisticated in the words they use. I suspect they will be very straight forward and relatively simple.

    1. how do I stop drinking
    2. stop drinking
    3. how do I quit drinking
    4. teenage alcoholic
    5. binge drinker
    6. give up drinking
    7. teenage alcoholism
    8. alcohol addict

Next time I'm going to charge you for doing your keyword research. LOL!

As a teenager perhaps something like...

"did alcohol cause impotence" (my son actually asked me that)
"don't know how to stop drinking" (obvious search)
"did Naruto drink?" (yeah... ask your kids...)
"how to be freaking cool without getting stoned"
"how not to drink and not be boring"
    "discrete alcoholism treatment"

And as a father I should look something like...

    "military school for teenagers"
    "monasteries on Chicago"
    "is pelex safe for teens?"
    "foster parents needed"

Teen: how to keep drinking and get away with it

I think a teenager wouldn't be thinking about how to fix the problem, just how to not get caught and continue to function as "normally" as possible.

Parent: how to control your teenager

The parent would be thinking of restrictions to put on his/her teen. I think a parent would view the drinking as a result of too much freedom, instead of looking to other sources.

P.S. I don't know you that well, but I sure hope the questions you have posed are not a cry for help!

That is the funniest thing I've read all day.

The only thing I drink is water, my wife will have an occasional glass of wine
with dinner and my daughter might have 1 or 2 drinks a week when she goes
to clubs to hear bands play.

No, alcoholism is not a problem in my family.

I just had an afterthought (which usually means I'm trying too hard). The teenager wouldn't actually search for anything "alcohol related" at all. I don't envision a teen alcoholic thinking there is anything to fix in the first place. He/she would probably search "why is everyone on my case lately?".
