Howdy.

I'm going to sell a site, maybe a couple sites soon.

I need help learning how to transfer a domain name and wordpress.

I'm familiar with FTP so downloading everything and putting it into a zip file is no problem. But from what I see, it's not as easy as just uploading the old files eh?

There's a thread in the War Room about it, and a couple others but I just don't get it. Maybe it's because my host is different from the hosts/services described in the various resources around. (My host is BlueHost by the way.)

Changing name servers, pushing domains, and messing with databases is on my 'to learn' list.

Maybe someone can let me do a 'practice' domain and website transfer? Half serious.

Assistance requested

Transferring the domain is easy -- just open a new account at whatever registrar the domain is at now. When you're ready to transfer, give the username and password for that account to the person receiving the domain. And they can go change the password to make it secure for them.

As for transferring WordPress, that's a bit more complicated. You will need to FTP the files at some point, but there's also stuff you need to do to the databases. Google "transferring WordPress new domain" or something like that and you'll find a bunch of tutorials to choose from.

Thanks. I did a bunch of searching around already.

I'm kind of the 'hands-on' type of learner...Especially with this internet marketing technical stuff:p

I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing, before I make a $5,000 sale on a website ya know?

LOL, I wish I had a way to 'test' somehow. Let me transfer naturalacaitrial.info to you You can keep it...

How do you have your hosting setup? If its set up with a reseller style account then you can just hand over the details of the hosting and you don't have to worry about it at all. Then it is simply a matter of transferring the domain name.

Otherwise check out this great tutorial - How To Transfer a Wordpress Blog | supersimpleblogging.com by fellow WF member. Shows you the steps necessary.

I watched all of those videos prior to posting this. Thank you though, it is a good resource.

But he references I believe, namecheap or something similar, who has a 'push domain' feature. I don't believe I have that.

My hosting is Bluehost and I don't believe it's a reseller account.

Suzanne has a very good tutorial that explains how to transfer
    a blog/site and domain to a buyer.

I looked at that thank you. For the most part, I think I know how to do it now.
But I'm nervous because I've never done it before, and I don't have a way to...practice LOL.

So far this is how I think it should go...

Copy the database. download it. Copy the wordpress files. download it.

buyer creates new database on their server. i give them copy of database, and copy of wordpress files.

buyer uploads database and wordpress files.

point dns servers to the buyers host's name nameservers....

But then...What about that 'push the domain' part? Is that everything?

What about that 'push the domain' part?

with Bluehost you have to go into the domain manager and "unlock" the domain.
then contact bluehost on how to go into your registrat account (which is FastDomain)

FastDomain will send you a EPP key

"Please find the requested EPP/transfer authorization key listed below.

Note: The transfer authorization (or EPP) key is a security key generated by the current registrar and verified through the global registries for validity. These keys are updated periodically for security reasons, thus this key will be valid for an indeterminate period of time.

    EPP key: 48fgg5efek982a1*"

Once inside your fastdomain account you can change the ownership, DNS settings and everything else to your friends account.

I'm pretty sure that's the correct route, It's been a while since I've done it

    Hope this helps,

    Dale
