Aweber Hacked? Clickbank Down? Do we rely on TOO many service providers?

The senior warriors here always advise the newbies to get your own website, get your own domain name, be careful of blogger and wordpress.org, but do we in fact rely on too many outside service providers?

Aweber
Clickbank
Paypal...

Reminds me of the "dropped a bomb on Im'ers" thread.

No point really, just trying to start a conversation...

Everyone who says "don't rely on too many other services" seems to gloss over one little fact ... the alternative is doing it yourself.

Do you really think you can setup better security for your autoresponder than Aweber AND get as good a delivery rate?

Do you really think you can provide a better uptime than Clickbank AND get the same affiliate exposure?

Do you really think you can ... no seriously, no one is setting up their own payment processor.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a fully bought and paid up tech geek. I love doing everything myself but sometimes it's just not appropriate.

All successful businesses rely on third parties for some things. You can't do everything yourself.

I don't see it being that much of a similarity as using your own domain over a Blogger freebie. When you lose a site on Blogger, you lose it for good. Your content is gone, your backlinks, your SE rank... gone for good. A payment processor can be replaced if something were to go wrong.

While doing businesses online we need some of these providers, among others.

What we can do is push them to be better, provide better customer experience, and be more secure then they are now - WAY MORE secure.

Problem is when people have just ONE plan, using just ONE provider, and that service has a caboomm.

Other then that, it's just business as usual: if it works I pay and keep my smile all day - if it doesn't work, I just choose another provider/option.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

  • So the McDonalds you walk into or the Gas station you pump your case at, they must also be relying on "too many" outside providers. Because they have outside merchant accounts, outside credit card processors, outside delivery companies... The list goes on and on.

The fact of the matter is, the same companies your attempting to complain about are largely the reason your in business. The majority of people wouldn't know how to or couldn't process their own credit card transactions. Besides needing a merchant account, you also need a signed SSL certificate, server hardening, security audits the list goes on and on. The same thing with bulk email, let me know the next time you send out a blast to 300 people through your account and the inbox rate you get.

The point here is, service providers do exactly that, they provide a service that otherwise would be more costly and more of a hassle to do yourself.

I knew that headline would get a rise!

I'm just being the devil's advocate here, but we all rely on ouside services of all types.

For someone new to the IM arena, they're always told to get their own hosting, their own domain, etc. but I got started with Squidoo, Weebly, WSO sales and the like.

And we all have to rely on what's available to promote our product/brand.

Don't get me started on my exploits with the autoresponder providers yesterday...lol

Andy said it so well it's almost pointless for me to add anything. It doesn't
matter if we rely on other people too much. The alternative is even less
      attractive.

I'd hate like hell to have to find some way of taking payments directly.

I won't even go into all the other stuff.
