Nigeria is synonimous with scam. Has been for as long as I can remember. Sad some haven't gotten the word yet.

You have to pity the family of a person like that. She got what she deserved. Too bad she didn't care more for her family than she did for the money.

Is there a lesson here for the rest of us...?

What a dreadful story.

It is so sad to see somebody so obsessed with greed destroy her family like that. A very tough lesson to learn.

I feel really sad for her and her family.

This is exactly the type of person I was trying to help when I helped shut down some of this Nigerian scamming. You can read the story here:

The Daily World

If the scammer is a United States national or is operating inside the U.S., he or she can go to prison for this.

It truly is amazing that greed can take hold of a person to such a devastating extent.

It makes me wonder how many others have been similarly duped (albeit for lesser amounts), and kept quiet for the shame of it.

Very sad.

Shocking. The naivety of some people is outstanding. I do worry for some folks...seriously, how do they survive day to day?

Truth is, the general public is far more susceptible to scams and fraud than we realize. My mum told me the other day about an email she received from her bank telling her to log into the "site" to verify her details. If she hadn't mentioned it to me, she would have gone ahead and lost her cash.

These peices of vermin are unstoppable and are virtually pillaging the elderly and the decent, unsuspecting, law abiding, hard working and trusting people of this world.

I get emails every single day from people that got duped from the classic Nigerian scam.

There are many more elaborate ones but the standard Nigerian scam still gets thousands of people a year.

Some Americans are running the scam now and try to make it look like they're overseas.

If the DOJ told her that what these people were doing was illegal and she sent them more money, she could be charged with being an accessory to a crime.

The law DID hit one of those "idiots" (actually, this person was willingly HELPING the Nigerian Scammers). Had she not pleaded down, she would have gotten 30 YEARS, too.

Well, I guess it's kind of like being in a casino.

You keep putting money into the slot machine and keep on hoping that it will hit.

An internet based email driven slot machine - that's pretty smart (in a shady way)!

It's just hard to believe somebody would actually believe in such racket. If it's too good to be true, then maybe it is. I remember this particular website that makes fun of these 401 scammers, they'll act as if they fell into the charade and lead the scammers to nothing and just waste their time. Hilarious!!

This is an unfair and stereotypical comment to make. I know two Nigerian IMers and they are continually fighting this stereotypical bias. Don't paint the whole country with the same brush.

Poor woman but I will like to make a correction here, not all NIGERIANS are scammers. I am a NIGERIAN and not a scam. I hate the impression that all NIGERIANS are scammers.

There are scammers in the UK and USA, it is every where in the world and not NIGERIA alone.

Yah I am defending my country.

Very sad.
There was a women in my local York paper Ian that had sent £25K to these type of scammers about 4/5 years back over the period of 6 weeks. All her lifesavings as well. What was worse was she was an admin manager! [:0]

I just can't believe anyone with an IQ above 60 could be so naiive. If she's a nurse she's at least of average intelligence but how can anyone possibly be scammed out of $400,000 like that?? At what point do you say, gee, something's not right here? $1,000, $10,000, $400,000?! I'm just astounded. If it was $20 it would be different, but $400,000!!! How many years does the average joe have to work to make that?

Also, most Nigerians are good people, but the scammers have given Nigeria a bad reputation. Only a small minority of Nigerians are scammers. There are probably more scammers in America, the Nigerian ones just made it famous. I'm surprised this woman managed to not hear about the scams. I've first heard about years ago.

Ok I just read the original article and president Bush sent her letters asking her to do the transfer so the terrorists wouldn't get it.

Quote:
When Spears began to doubt the scam, she got letters from the President of Nigeria, FBI Director Mueller, and President Bush. Terrorists could get the money if she did not help, Bush’s letter said. Spears continued to send funds. All the letters were fake, of course.
lol it would be funny if it weren't sad.

When talking about scammers. In two days now, I have been getting emails from so called paypal. But It is a scam. I got the first email yesterday coming from service@paypal.com. I got suspicius and sent the email to spoof@paypal.com to check it out and guess what, it was a scam. So called fraudulent email. I threw the emails and changed my password and security questions in my account.

So be careful when you get emails like this from paypal

Mehmet

Let me just throw a word about this. I really don't know how many of you here believe in GOD. Most nigerian scammers have gone diabolical, they now employ divinations and consult with spiritual wicked forces. You will be amazed if you are told what these guys do.
She might have not been in her right senses. BLACK POWER. From when she opened her email to the series of calls she got, to the greed that suddenly came over her, she could have been controlled.

Guys you better pray that you dont fall into the hands of such evil.
Stop condeming her, instead pray that she finds strenght to pull through.
Pray for yourselfs also. So that you do not fall prey to the snare of the wicked one. Stay blessed.

Yes. They might have placed a spell on her. This explains alot of her actions. Sometimes when these guys cold call their victims they wear charms and amulets which has a kind of spiritual impact on the victims.
Scammers found out that it's not business as usual. With all the awareness it became harder by the day to scam people around the world.

And since they have no other source of income corpuled with the fact that the money they hit is lavishly wasted they had to divise very strange means of duping people.

So they turned to the DEVIL.

Am not tring to scare you. It's a fact. Like they say you are better prepared when you have the right knowlege. You have to pray always
because this can happen to anyone who is not spiritually minded.
Thanks
