Hi Warriors,

Imagine there's a family, moving from New York City to LA. They move all their furniture in big trucks, and fly over to LA themselves, how does their car get there? Well there's companies that will pay you the expenses to drive a car from A-B. You don't get paid a wage as such, but it's basically a free ride. You are just delivering the car, and have an allotted time to do it in.

What are the names of companies that do this?

Thanks,
Matt

Go to eBay and check out the vehicle delivery systems offered on that site...A major player in the game used to be Horizon Transport.

Use search on home page to look for "car delivery systems" or some such thing....

      Nothing worthwhile there then....

      TRY CRAIGSLIST!!

What is that called? ****STUPID****! Frankly, when mine was delivered, about 2600 miles, it was on a FLATBED! It cost about $900, as I recall. IMAGINE someone DRIVING it 2600+ miles! The potential for breakdowns, accidents, etc... It would take about EIGHT tankfulls of gas! That is about 112 gallons of gas! EVEN at $2/gallon it would cost about $224 JUST for the gas! BTW that is about a 44 hour drive WHICH, realistically, is probably at least 5 stops, and will take about 6 days or so! Assuming an average $100 per stay, it is about an extra $400+. Assuming they want $10/hour that is $440 more. $244+$400+$440=$1084! SO, you pay more and get an extra 2600+ miles put on your car! WHAT A DEAL!

Those $$$$ figures as well as a very mobile populace were a big influence on birth of legitimate companies such as Horizon....anywhere from a load of snowmobiles, hot tubs, other personal items as well as vehicles.

Also magnified in size was the "hotshotting" industry---all those guys you see running up and down the freeways. Buy a 3/4 or up diesel (most likely dually for weight capabilities)---find the best fifth wheel/gooseneck trailer for your purpos...get some insurance, chase down a few loads and kiss your life goodbye!

12 hour plus days, 200,000 plus miles per year increasing insurance (prouct liability is a killer) and trying to keep ahead of weather, vehicle repairs, tire costs, and always looking for a hot shower. All for an "load" charge, a "dropoff" fee and pennies per mile. But dammit you are SELF_EMPLOYED and your own man......!

You get to see a lot of country but all at 60 + mph and no time to stop and visit the scenery.

I quit when my insurance costs approached $2500 per month...four or five sets of tires per year (6 tires at a pop) and fuel prices climbed high enough to replace the fading ozone layer.

      Fun....YES-----profitable......NOPE!!!!

Yeah, Obviously, in my estimates, which should be VERY close, they had less than $640 they they could MAYBE get profit from. Truck drivers often have a place they can sleep in the cab, may stay at far smaller places, etc.... Which may give them over $200 extra profit. Of course I didn't count wear and tear, damage, or insurance. On just one trip that could be in the thousands, and they have to make that up from other jobs.

There are a ton of firms that specialize in this. I don't know for sure what they're called now, but they used to be called "drive away" companies.

Looking in the yellow pages, it seems they still are. Listed (at least locally) under "Automobile Transporters and Drive-Away Companies."

A friend did that for a while when he was single.
I think he worked for C&L which is a local based company.
If I remember right many of the local car dealers used the service as well as individuals.
If you google automobile transporters (thanks Paul) you can find a lot of them.

A friend of mine did it for a while and loved it. I couldn't think of the right term either, but he did refer to working for a "drive away" company, so it sounds right to me.
