Is there nothing this company can't do? The hugely popular site Facebook, with 500 million users, is beating back mock sites, fake sites, and competition that thies to use a similar name: It is in the process of getting a patent on the word "face" from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent would only apply to telecom sites that provide "online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users." Sound familiar?
In case you're wondering, the company's name, Facebook, already has a trademark associated with it. This is just one more move to block like-sounding names.
That's not nothing: According to one domain-name registration company, there are 53,000 sites with the word "face" in their name. They can't all be Facebook copycats, but with a trademark patent, some could face potential lawsuits. (Pun intended.)
CNET points out that Facebook has gone after social-networking sites with the word "book" in their names, so this is one more way to block competing sites.
