So what's Father Christmas bringing y'all this year?

Hey,

Firstly, I apologise to anyone who doesn't celebrate or believe in Christmas. You're more than welcome to skip this thread.

So the "big day" is rapidly approaching again - this year seemingly having passed more quicky than all those previous, unfortunately - and I wondered what everyone was hoping or expecting to receive.

This could be stuff you've asked or hope for, or it could be stuff you seem to receive every year, without fail, from a friend or relative.

Yeah, I know we're all (mostly and/or debatably) adults, but in my experience "asking for stuff" isn't a practise limited only to children. Lots of people exchange gifts at this time of the year, and some are so inclined as to seek to ensure what they buy will be at least semi-useful and/or appreciated by the recipient.

So lets have it, if you will: what are you hoping Santa has in his sack?

For me?

It's the first year I really haven't been able to think of anything I want. I'll admit I'm quite badly in need of some new clothes, and I can't walk around in these rags forever. When approached by my parents I hinted at my penchant for check-shirts; I like the trucker/lumberjack look, from time-to-time. Hence the beard (to the extent I'm able to grow one, anyway, lol).

Beyond that, an assortment of spirits (of the beverage variety - I'm no Scrooge): probably a whole lot of whisky (probably Scotch; American Bourbon is alright, but not my preference, usually), some old navy rum, and perhaps some gin. I foresee some strong dark ales in my stocking, too (among a few lumps of coal, nuts and and my annual Orange).

I expect I'll wake up to some nice cigars, too. Unfortunately, by the time Boxing Day comes, all that'll likely remain is empty cases, and a throat so raw I'll talk like Tom Waits sings.

(I'm not a very health-conscious young man, but I do have class and good taste - or so I like to believe. )

Beyond that, who knows?

What about you good people?

I came to the belief years ago that when someone tells you what they want then it is no longer a "gift" but an "ask".

Therefore, I pay attention to those whom I give gifts to throughout the year and then make my choice on what would be "at least semi-useful and/or appreciated by the recipient". Of course they are always free to return or store that gift on a long forgotten closed shelf. Then if I notice it is not used/appreciated I adopt my approach to that person.

Not many failures through the years, and YES I do let them gift me (if they feel so inclined) in the same manner.

If all this "global warming" doesn't let up real soon, I'm getting snow for Christmas -- and it is NOT something that I would request. Trust me on that one.

Hah. Here in the UK we had some pretty crazy snow last year / early this year, and pretty much everything ground to a halt. Everyone staying off work, many millions per day in lost revenues, etc.

And the really silly thing is that what constitutes "major snow" for us is probably considered to be little more than a bit of frost for others' in the world, where it's more commonplace.

Our infrastructure is wholly inadequate, and our ability to deal with such relatively non-events (in comparison to other parts of the world) is frankly quite laughable.

I guess we need to really get our act together.

I trust that when it snows, it really snows, where you are, then?

I personally really love the snow - it seems to change my whole outlook for the better. Maybe it's just the novelty, I don't know.

Michael - I am a citizen of Idaho, where in the North it snows tens to hundreds of feet depending on your altitude, but this year I am at my sister's in Stockton California, which is about an hour East of San Fransisco as the crow flies. We've already had a night or two of freezing weather here. I decided to stay over the winter before going back so I could enjoy a mild winter - today it's raining and probably in the low 40's. Some freaking treat -- until I look at the temps at home which are freezing during the day.

      Wow! That's absolutely crazy.

I think in your position, then, I might also share your displeasure at the sight or thought of snow.

      Crazy stuff.

I believe in Xmas but not the gift giving part.

So, I'm not expecting anything from anyone.

I love buying Xmas gifts for the minors in the family but I refuse the buy
Xmas gifts for the adults and won't allow them to buy anything for me.

IMHO it's a big waste of time and especially money.

But for those that want to indulge, I don't begrudge.

    Happy Holidays!!

I bought myself a new laptop and that's all I really wanted. I didn't have much choice as my old laptop died. Since then I put a new hard drive that cost $85 in the old one and it worked so now I have a spare! Anything else will just be icing on the cake. I'm happy!

I will be getting what I always get - weeks of shopping and preparation beforehand and several hours in the kitchen on the day. For some reason I still love Christmas.
