I have a deaf friend i keep in touch with via facebook.

He claims to have this guy that is going to give him $90,000.00 to go to school but he has to pay him $1,200.00 (Fedex Fee). That this deal is just for Deaf and Hard of Hearing from a guy named "Officer Dare".. Apparently there are a few deaf people thinking they are going to get $90K.

It screams scam to me but my friend is all caught up thinking he has found good fortune.

I have searched online an cant find anything.

Anyone hear of this before?

It's a scam. I don't have to Google to figure that one out. Do you really think he is FedEx'ing $90,000 cash? LOL.

      Definitely a scam.

Everyone gets these messages promising the earth.

Delete all of the messages instantly and do not be tempted to engage with these scammers.

Usually they're from Nigeria - gangs working out of Internet cafes to fool others into parting with their private data and bank account details.

Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Most of them are pretty well documented. This makes it really easy to say.. "Hey here is a link to where this has been done to other people, dont let it be done to you."

I really hope he hasnt sent any money..

Oh come on - is it real? Tell your friend to call the police before giving his money away to crooks. They will tell him not only what a scam is, but may be able to track down the perpetrator.

Even when someone is given money for school - the student enrolls, and the funds are sent to the school, not to the applicant. If people just sent the money to someone, what is THEIR guarantee that a person would use it for school? Any of us could claim that money and never even look at the inside of an enrollment office.

Tell your friend if he's planning on passing college courses, he's going to need to learn to think more analytically than this.

HeySal - It is different with the deaf and is hard for most to understand but what you might find common knowledge quite often to them is not. Especially right now with times being tough on most and many want to hold out on that hope that something good for them is due and right around the corner.

I find it hard to believe your friend is so gullible.

Come on - there are so many clues in that email that reveal "SCAM" in big letters, anyone should not need convincing.

For crying out loud, they even say "Nigerian government" - in the email.

I don't agree with your assessment of the deaf - I've known several deaf people well - from a boy who was a good friend of my younger son for years to two people that worked where I did. They couldn't hear - but they weren't uneducated and they weren't dumb.

If your friend still believes this is real after reading the email you posted above - he'll have an expensive lesson.

He isnt dumb at all.. he just looks for the good in people so hard that it blinds him from the bad. He is a fantastic guy and it just sucks seeing him get sucked into stuff like this.

My statement was far from an assessment of the deaf but i do from experience find that the deaf culture from the 27 people i met in Orlando while living there for a few years do tend to look for the good in people. It is refreshing but at the same time sad as they didnt seem to understand how insulting, negative and just out right bad people can be.

Now.. pack to the point.. i found a few good sites documenting Nigerian scams, how they work and sent them to him. I still have been unable to find this specific scam documented but enough close as to where maybe it will hit home.

OK, that message screams FOREIGN, NON NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKING, SCAMMER! HECK, WHOS text number is different from their phone number? WHAT is Tmail? NO US government agency in their right mind would give nigeria ANY control over US funds. HECK, it would be tantamount to TREASON!

ALSO, most money stolen by scammers is NEVER recovered, and most CAN NEVER be recovered!

And WHY would they give $90,000 to a person JUST forr being deaf? They WON'T! Deaf people ARE a protected class, and they CAN get payment for special hardships, or to overcome handicaps, etc... But they WON'T just pay a person for being deaf. They may pay for hearing aids, lights to mitigate hearing handicaps, helper dogs, funds to start a business, legal aid, etc... but NOT for regular clothing, food, retirement, etc...

Try to make that clear to your friend. I won't go through all the mistakes that have this SCREAM FOREIGNER and DISHONEST. Hopefully YOU know.

Having said all that, I WISH I remembered the name of a channel and shows I watched, I believe in California. They had a REAL nice talk show on and the host was DEAF! It was geared towards DEAF people AND they showed how DEAF people got funding to start and facilitate businesses. One guy was a baker, and his bakery was setup with lights on the roof that FLASHED when people came in, etc... And those were things available over a DECADE ago! BTW the host DID have an interpreter. HECK, some of his guests could speak/hear and didn't know signing. And I was just intrigued. Besides, it was interesting. And it isn't everyday that the HOST is deaf and "dumb". SORRY, but that IS the official term.

That is the message i received when i emailed the two email addresses he sent me.. The one he received (will see if he will send me a copy) was all about "for deaf only" and other statements about helping only deaf and hard of hearing.

From what i read most of the scammers cant be prosecuted due to international laws. Didn't really make much sense to me but i might of misread it.

A friend of mine said that the Dateline guy that catches the sick adults that try and sleep with kids did a great show about internet scammers as well. Going to see if i can find it online when i get home. If it is good and captioned i will send it to him.

For the record I KNOW, and KNEW, that that was the response YOU got, and that it was for deaf people only. How do you figure I believed anything different?

Scammers CAN be CHARGED, etc... The problem is carrying it out. With Nigeria they obviously can't. Nigeria doesn't even care to bother. SOME places, like France, may complain and put up red tape BUT will often extradite people for bad crimes.

          They do?

My parents had to buy my first set of hearing aids 100% on their own during a difficult financial time, because the BC government wouldn't pay for them at all. Same with the second pair. The third pair was fully-funded because the NL government is remarkably progressive in that one area (but certainly not every area), and I got a couple hundred dollars off the fourth pair (when you consider the cost of these things, that's nothing) because the ON government can't decide how it feels.

Also, please point me in the direction of this funding to start a business. I'd love to see it.

You would have to be in the USA.

Most states have different programs for disabilities.

Alabama has hearing aids, ENT doc visits, regular hearing checkups and a great deal of other things.

Orlando Florida has some GREAT programs for training, education, plus all the ENT doc visits, hearing aids and even business mentor programs to advise people with disabilities how to create their own employment that will work best with the difficulties they have.

They may not pay 100%, but they certainly do have policies to pay in the US. And YEAH, hearing aids CAN cost a LOT. There is one stupid company that has Lee majors(the guy that played the 6 million dollar man) advertising a hearing aid as inexpensive, etc... It turns out that it is a continuity plan that can be expensive.

They paid 100% on 2 sets of hearing aids for me. One set in 1991 and another set in 2000.

I think it is based on an allowance as i recieve no other services. The hearing aids did however allow me to be able to hear in college classes that i paid for.. well, am currently paying for in student loans.

As well as be very aware of how bad i mispronounce some words.

Yeah, it depends on the area you're in here, too. Some provinces are amazing (complete hearing aid coverage for all but batteries in NL until you leave school, which includes university) while others... aren't so much (nothing at all in BC while we lived there).

There might be support here at the government level, but as far as I know, no "start your own small business" funding specifically for the Deaf. I've never really identified with the Deaf community, so I haven't explored that option too much. I went mainstream instead (though I was homeschooled) and worked as a cashier, phone support person, etc without too much difficulty.

Yeah, the expense of hearing aids is an incredibly stupid thing. I won't drag politics into it too much, but it's my firm belief that the government ought to pay for hearing aids for people who were born with the disability and didn't do it to themselves through loud music, etc.

I was born in '91, got my first pair in '94 through my parents' efforts and my second in '02ish, third in '05 because we'd just moved to a province where they were free and we could get a better kind, and fourth in '09. If those are your only two pairs of hearing aids, I'm impressed.

I hear you on the necessity of hearing aids for college. Full-time student here, and if I didn't have hearing aids and sit in the first few rows, I definitely wouldn't get anything close to what I'm paying for.

...and I hear you on the speech impediment, too. Here's an example of me talking; I've had considerable speech therapy through a hearing aid clinic and at home, but the accent is still loud and clear.

I used to have GREAT hearing. Today, the fidelity isn't as great, and some of the range has been lost. ****I**** have PROTECTED my hearing but with MORONS with RIDICULOUSLY noisy alarms that they triiger sporadically, people that don't know how to use mikes, etc... It has been a LOSING battle! HECK, in the hotel I am in NOW, I have to hold the phone over a FOOT from my ear when calling the front desk. SERIOUSLY! They YELL into the phone and it sounds like they are in a kitchen near a running jet engine or something. I mean the "white noise".... and it sounds like someone is knocking pans together.

And AIRPORTS? The IDIOTS with the alarms they keep sitting off, holding the mike close to speakers(for maximun feedback), and YELLING into the mike CLOSE to their face, etc.... And I haven't even brought up the large vehicles, like busses, with their AIR BRAKES!

So not all acquired deafness is due to intentional over exposure.

I had over the ear hearing aids many years ago about 12 years before you were born. I did speech therapy many years of my younger life but the benefit of mean friends helped more than anything.

The other 2 sets were bought for me but i dont wear them often. I find that when i wear them too much my speech gets worse trying to compensate for what i do hear. In college in a classroom situation however i didnt stand a chance without them. In high school the technology was just not there and they did me no good.

So you are high pitch loss as well.. My accent is similar. Being in the south i am told,"You ant frum rund here r u boy", quite often or "Wer didja get that axent frum". I just smile and say from education.

Growing up (many years ago) in middle and high school believed i was from Canada because i "talked funny" and my birthday is July 1st... the logic always made me smile.

Most of the guidance and help is for the fully deaf (as it should be) and i hope there is not the division for you that is abundant here between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing. It is often disapointing at best.

With hearing loss becoming more common (baby boomers geting older) the reaction to hearing impairment is not an alien experence for most.

This has SCAM written all over it. Its a shame that anyone would prey on others weaknesses like that, but this is the reality of the world we live in, where hard core criminals and con-artists can ""hide" behind an email address and ruin peoples lives in an instant.

If you friend refuses to listen to your reason and logic and see this for what it is, then he's only going to end up with the very short end of the stick. I hope you can get through to him before its too late.

I think that Scambuster site will be good. Tons of documentation about the different scams and signs of a scam. Hopefully he will choose to learn from reading of others mistakes and not the hard way of being scammed.

The message email he received was different than the one i received when i replied to the email address he sent me. I used a hotmail address that is for the most part setup for when i am about 90% sure something is going to result in spam or scam. His message was all about helping just deaf and hard of hearing.. mine was nothing like that.

I did my good deed and provided him information about the different scams out there... it will be up to him ultimately to make a choice on his method of learning.

Had hoped to get more helpful information from such a large group of experienced users but well... it is what it is...

It is like seeing someone being mugged.. do you help and try to stop it or do you yell that it is their fault and they are stupid walking on the street?

Thats a little below the belt that last comment.

What do you want people to do here?

            What can they do realistically?

99.9% of the individuals on this forum can instantly tell you this is a scam, a thief in Nigeria preying on the weak and the vulnerable to get them to part with their personal details and cash.

Deaf or not, your friend is a complete loony if he falls for this and he'll only have himself to blame, if he believes this is someone trying to help him.

Hell, get him to write to me and I'll explain it to him in no uncertain terms.

I'll even teach him the fine art of scam baiting if he's up for it.

As a previous scam baiter, I know their tricks inside out. Those guys are scum.

              How to Report a Scam
Yea it was a little harsh.. but the people here are unbelievable resources of information and exceptional experience. In my last few post and becoming common in other threads.... replies are the equivalent of a flash from a flamethrower. More cut comments and judgmental statements than helpful guidance which i was under them impression the forum is all about. At least that is why i paid to support it.

I think once he passes a full year being online he will be fine. He will get burned, he will get hacked.. but as a fellow human being even if he was not my friend i am going to at least guide him in the right direction as many have done for me online over the past 17 years. We all were beginners once...

One day (looks like many years from now) i would LOVE to learn more about baiting. I know i cant con a con as that is just not a skill i have but still i think anyone that turns the tables on a con should get an award and would love to understand more.

I will definitely distribute How to Report a Scam as i had not found that one.. thank you very much..

When I said "is it real?" I was being sarcastic. I know you care about your friend, but it just urks me that people fall for this stuff. They need to stop "wanting" so bad that greed gets in the way of their neurons firing. I hope you chew him up one side and down the other -- he needs someone to dose him with some reality. Maybe that's tough love - but when people think that getting large sums of money is that easy, that, deep down is greed talking - not gullibility. The FBI says that a very large number of people that report these scams to them after being ripped, knew that what they were doing was very likely illegal or unethical and they were more than ready and willing........until they got bit.

Don't treat your friend handicapped and he won't act it. Chew him out royally.

I guess it is greed never really looked at it like that. Thank you for the perspective. I had kind of looked at it like people desperation for hope or feeling entitled or due. With him... he feels due some sort of good.

I chewed on him good.. but i felt it important to after i chewed on him to provide information so he can learn. If not then that is just abuse.. providing knowledge after a good chewing is tough love. At least in my opinion. I just couldnt find much that explained thing on a beginner level that i felt like would hit home.

He speaks better than i do as he lost his hearing later and razzes me because i work hard to speak right. I bust his grapes about making the choice to stay mute.

He is far from handicapped but one of those people that annoy the hell out of you as they are so happy and see so much good but at the same time you dont want them to change because you wish you could still see the world like that and not for what the world and people really are. That made more sense in my mind than it does on the screen reading it.

Exactly what I was thinking too Kay.

To me it screams scam.. to someone with limited or no online experience it doesn't.

Hell, if everyone knew better and none of the scams worked then there would be no scams. Unfortunately there are people out there that do fall for things....

So, being as everyone is as experienced to see it as a scam right away.. the original point remains... does anyone have a good resource, link or whatever that is... "Hello, welcome online! People suck and will scam you, here is how you can tell." type site, ebook, resource or whatever that they would suggest?

I honestly don't think you should need all those sites to tell you this is a scam - or for your friend to figure it out.

Poor English is not common for someone working for the government. Anything that purports to be "money from Nigeria" screams "SCAM" every time.

I'm sorry - but it would be naive to the point of "dumb" to believe there is a program that sends big money to people who didn't ask for it - that is sanctioned by the US government - and comes from Nigeria.

Not sure why it keeps being missed...

THE MESSAGE I POSTED ABOVE WAS THE REPLY I RECEIVED AFTER EMAILING THE 2 EMAILS MY FRIEND HAS ON THIS THIS GUY TRYING TO SCAM HIM.

The message sent to him was all about US Education grant just for hard of hearing and deaf and no mention of Nigeria.

ANYONE WHO WANTS THE TWO EMAIL ADDRESSES PM ME AND I WILL SEND THEM TO YOU.

Make a disposable email address.. fill in the profile about being deaf and saving money to go to school or to buy a car.. make sure the account is connected to nothing you have and then email the addresses to see the stuff they send.

I do not recommend doing this... but it is entertaining..

On one email they are sending the message above.. on another email they send a message about being from USA and needing money for a ticket home.

I can't remember the outcome,if he was able to have them arrested and/or prosecuted.

Just another variation of the aging nigerian scam always requires personal info always makes outrageous claims one couple in bc -young couple went through with it. they went to the bank and deposited the cheque-yes they got a cheque. after the time period of holding the bank released the funds. the couple sent back to the fellow an outrageous amount of money. they then got hauled in by the bank and are responsible for this mega sum of money. even though the bank cleared it. what a croc but nonetheless unsuspecting people are had all over there are I am sure a ton of stories like this but the point is this is the same scam in a different manner.

There is a lack in fidelity of hearing impaired people AND, if continuous from at least say 2 to perhaps 10, it leaves their speech with a distinctive quality that many that have heard it will recognize as being a product of being deaf. It's silly that such a thing would be mistaken for canadian.

Teach your friend how to do internet research by taking strings of text from the offer and searching in Google. Most of the time it's easy to find out it's a scam.

That basic skill will prevent many problems for your friend in the future.

A few years back, I had a laugh with this kind of thing. It seems to be the same kind of set-up but often in different guises. Not quite aimed at the deaf though...

On this occasion an actual banker's cheque of $60,000 was sent. All I had to do was supply a delivery address and a "gentleman's agreement" to pay something along the lines of $5,000 by wire-transfer, once the cheque had cleared for this "act of generosity".

Anyway, the cheque was given International Clearance.

"International Clearance", is a scam in itself (in my opinon) as you have to pay the processing fee and it doesn't even guarantee that the cheque is genuine!

By banking law, it is now between the two banks to settle the finances and the client has a right to claim credit until the money is actually transferred into his/her account - something like that.

To this day, I probably still have this "credit" available as I've not heard anything from my bank about it, yet that $60,000 has still to materialize!

What was really impressive about the scam was how genuine the cheque looked, amazing... (Although, to be honest, the name on the cheque and the name of the individual I corresponded with via email, who sent very dodgy identification. Didn't even match!) lol:rolleyes:

If they didn't match, maybe the check WAS "GENUINE". That is ANOTHER scam commonly called money laundering. The person gets something, like a LEGITIMATE financial instrument, through a scam, or theft. They THEN get a third party to handle the transaction. This ISOLATES them! One side is more likely to fall for it because the third party looks more legit. The OTHER side is anonymous, and protected somewhat from prosecution. They get the third party to do it through greed.

Yeah it's a scam. No one would ever give out $90,000 for someone to just go to school. Whomever is doing it, is trying to steal $1200 away from your friend. It makes me sick when people do these kinds of things.

"Obama and the Nigerian Government" hahahahahaha...no offense but anybody that falls for this stuff deserves it. You have to be pretty damn dumb to fall for any of those scams.

But honestly, do something like send fake money (just print it on paper from online haha),crap... whatever.. just to f' with the scammers and mess with them. It's pretty funny to screw with them lol. There are sites online you can check of people getting the scammers back lol

I would find it funny if I didn't realize some are not alert enough to know the difference... Even after I told the guy from FBook I knew it was scam he kept saying but I got my 30,000... I played him along with him in beginning to see what he would say.. He tried hard and still plays so innocent...LOL

I feel sorry for people who send money expecting these wonderful things to happen. Don't ever send money to these people. You will lose your hard earned money.
