I ordered a couple of exercise videos on ebay. Had them mailed to an address in the U.S. where I picked them up when I was there last week.
Brought them back home to Israel.
When I put them in my laptop DVD player I get this message that the "region code" of my DVD player isn't right and that I should insert a disc created for "my region" or that I should change the region code of my DVD player. If I try to change the region code I get a message that I can only change this 5 times!!!!!!

What can I do?

You have it right. Players are "set" to different regions and most disks are made for specific regions. If the disks you bought are for the US,and your player is set to Israel, you will need to change the players region, because as far as I know, you can't change a disks setting.

Yeah. But you can only change the region 5 times and then the last one is permanent!!
I found DVDidle online and downloaded their free (hack) software. I think that it's only a trial though and I'll have to fork up $40 *sigh*.

Thanks. I really never had a clue that I can't just buy any DVD!!!!! I think that there should be an indication on each video what regions it's appropriate for. Many U.S. discs do play here so it's hard to know. GRRRR!

You are right, you can only change it 5 times, which is why you need to know what your buying.
After the first reply I remembered that sometime people sell region free disks.

There is software available that circumvents the region counter restriction. Something like: DVD Region+CSS Free - Watch & Copy Any DVD! Remove Region, CSS, ARccOS, etc.

I've never used it personally, so can't vouch for it. That said, I believe the practice of restricting DVD by region has already been deemed anti-competitive behaviour by a number of countries and probably only needs to be legally challenged in a few more countries to be eliminated altogether. In the meanwhile though, something like the above software is probably your best bet. (Again, I haven't used that particular software, so have nothing either good or bad to say about it.)

    Hope this helps...

    Tommy.

The best way I've found is to have 3 dvd drives attached to the PC.

One plays my local region (4 for Australia, NZ), one is set to Region 2 (UK, Ireland, Europe), and the third is set to Region 1 (US, Canada). That way I can play dvd's from any of the major English speaking nations without having to tweak anything.

I've never trusted the software that changes drives/players to "region free" status, and with DVD drives being so cheap this is the easiest way.

Oops, I've just noticed you have a laptop, so this strategy may or may not be practical.

Anyway, it's a good method for desktops.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

I downloaded DVDidle. It seems to be doing the job. Right now it's a free trial and I may have to fork over $40 to continue using it after a month.
      Thanks!
