My questions about directory: Anyone care to answer?

With the growing popularity that social bookmarking is getting, I am wondering why some people even care to put up any additional web directories. Does it really work? With the possibility of it getting phased out by the IMO Google, will it still be good to consider directories? How will the online world be affected by the sudden disappearance of these directories? When I try to imagine the scenario, I just can't help but think that we are still not ready for it. I think the best thing for us to do with it now is to hold on and be vigilant.

If all the links I have placed in website directories suddenly disappeared, I doubt I would notice. A directory link is just one kind of link. Plenty of other kinds of links to get.

Obviously, if you run an established site with a page rank above 4 then you don't need to bother with directory submission. I'd guess you've already done it but don't need it now. However, if your site is new or lacking inbound, one-way, links then directories still help. Submission to the web directories is free, software is available to significantly decrease the required time, and the links are (mostly) permanent.

I wouldn't recommend writing new anchor text for every directory. In fact I would recommend doing the bare minimum for directory submission and worry about more important things.
