I was contacted by a company called EDUN.com to make some banners for their latest campaign today and I'm currently working with their guy in NY. I was showing my friend the banners (because I liked the scarf that they were advertising) and she said "That's EDUN!" and I was like "what is EDUN?"

Apparently this company is run by Bono (from the band U2) and they contacted me to do their banners! Cool huh!

I never even heard of them but my friend is a U2 fan. I just happened to like the scarf that they were advertising.:rolleyes:

    However, just one thing...

    Did this client give you permission to publicly state that they're a client? If so, great! You can ignore the rest of this message.

    But if not, then I'd remove their name/link/identifying details from your OP. That's because many customers have some expectation of privacy. I know if I hired someone to do some work for me and they posted about it without my permission, I'd be pissed. I know some other people who feel the same way.

    Sometimes there are clear business reasons for not revealing this info. Like maybe a business doesn't want their competitors to know who they outsource to (so that they're competitor doesn't "swipe" a good freelancer from them).

    Other times it could be an embarrassment to a company or individual to have their name revealed as a customer. For example, imagine Hugh Hefner blogging about every new Playboy customer.

    Sometimes it's a matter of trust -- customers want to feel like they can trust you with their private information. That's why many marketers have clear privacy policies on their sites, where they specifically assure customers that info/details won't be shared.

    There are other reasons, too. But those are just a few.

    Again, congrats. But please do consider these privacy issues and how it may impact your relationship with your current clients (as well as future clients who may at this moment be considering whether to use your services).

      So I WILL choose to ignore the rest of your message. Thanks for taking my positive news and turning it into something negative. I totally understand where you're coming from, but now you've probably made me lose potential orders because of your post. Thanks for that.

      I understand privacy issues and my business dealings with any client I have are MY business. And I will be putting their banners on my site as a reference as soon as they've approved them.

      I feel that if you really felt this strongly about the issue you should have PMed me instead of ruining my thread with my allegedly unscrupulous business practices. You have no idea about my conversations with them so I would ask you to mind your own business quite frankly.

      If you were truly trying to "help" me you should have PMed me with your concern before potentially slandering my business dealings.

        I think you overreacted, Jennifer. I can assure you Becky was only trying to help you. We see a lot of different people here with all levels of experience and savvy. A lot of people would not have known what she imparted, and I can say with confidence others have learned from her post.

      Jennifer,

      It's unlikely that Becky's post lost you any potential clients. If anything, it probably helped as it prompted your response, clarifying the privacy issue. Without that, there may have been many others with similar reservations having read your OP.

      So it's all good.

      As for the PM issue; don't forget this is a public forum and Becky's warning would also be useful to many others, perhaps without your experience, who might be tempted to make a similar post.

      Dennis was being nice in his comments. I think perhaps a bit too nice, but that's Dennis.

      This is the worst overreaction I've seen here in weeks, and that's saying something. No-one accused you of anything, no-one "slandered" you or your business, and no-one expressed anything like malice. Becky gave a general cautionary note intended to be helpful. You turned around and attacked her for it.

      Is this your normal response to friendly conversation that doesn't make you the star?

      Wow! That's even more impressive than mine.

      The banners have been approved but I'm teetering on whether or not to put them up on my site. You see they gave me a post card that another designer had already done and said "make banners out of this post card" and I thought the design was crap to begin with. So I feel the banners are crap and I really don't want to put them on my page. But they loved them....so much that they came back and ordered more. I don't know what to do. I don't want crappy banners on my site, but I want to have the brand recognition. I'm open to advice.
