I was in 8th grade when I heard John Lennon was shot. It hurt then, it hurts now, but it also had a major impact on my life.

    I remember the day well.
I was the office manager for the company I was working at and my bosses had a tv on all day when they worked in the office.
When it happened they called me in and we all watched the news reports as they came in. A sad day indeed.

I remember it, too - but have to say I'm over it this year. The media coverage has been totally ridiculous. A couple documentaries must have run 10 times each in the past couple of days.

Why would it hurt people. the guy was a song writer/singer and also had some awful strange perceptions and beliefs all this stuff is just weird.elvis dies. lennon dies. people get hurt.does it hurt when a bum on the street is alive one night and dead the next?

Someone shoots him and now years later people are hurt? People die every day due to shootings drug overdoses etc I don't understand not trying to be insensitive but really what gives with this stuff?

Some people have a lasting effect on others. Lennon was one of those people.

I could say more, but whats the point. If you don't get it, nothing I say will change that.

      Good for you.

I was just trying to start a nice thread in remembrance of somebody I felt a connection to.

I would certainly think somebody that appears as knowledgeable as you, Kay, would understand the concept of anniversaries. There's something about nice round numbers that appeals to people. I would also think you would have enough decency to see this thread for what it was instead of being rude about it.

You must be a blast at funerals.

Just trying to understand what makes people who never met these people have such feelings for them Michael.

It makes no sense to me John Lennon, Elvis, Michael Jackson, I mean these were just people not anything special just people who ate, slept and got up the same as everyone else.
I am sorry if that bothers you or others but this stuff bothers me like really people are people not one is more important than another every single one of us is born with a family and are born into the same crap as the next guy

Interesting post, I cannot say it affects me because I wasnt born then. I dont think it matters if someone is famous or not- a life is a life, however I also agree with Will people are dying everyday. Some in the most brutal conditions and we dont even get to hear about it.
All I can say is I hope he is in a better place and life goes on. We shouldnt get down but make these incidents give us happiness and strength. He didnt know you and you didnt know him but if you're down or letting his death affect you, your focus on the positive things in life has been affected.
Im going into a big topic here, bottom line is that if you dont already study some positive mindset/inspirational material and be happy
    Take care

    Geez people!

    Lighten up.

I was just expressing some feelings of loss that I still feel. A sort of a "what might have been" kind of thing.

I'm not depressed or anything like that. But I still get teary-eyed when I think about the tragic loss that happened that day. And yes, John is worthy of remembering - he CONTRIBUTED to society in a big way.

You know what really irks me? The fact that I was trying to just say a kind word, and share some nice memories of his musi, but instead you all poison the well.

Duly noted. Thanks for ruining my day.

    All the best,
    Michael

I was just speaking my own opinion sorry I hurt you here I just really don't understand why people elevate another person who is the same as them.

      LOL

      The same?

Do you love me as much as you love your mother?

Do you look at the person who just joined the WF today the same way as somebody who has been here for years and has 1,000s of posts, and has CONTRIBUTED to the forum?

See, in my opinion, John Lennon CONTRIBUTED to society in a big way and he was murdered. A lot of people felt like they knew something of John through his many albums and songs.

For the record, you didn't hurt me. Irked me a little, sure, but I'll get over it.

It's not that John's life was worth more, or that somebody else's is worth less, that's not what I'm trying to say. What I'm saying is that EVERYBODY feels closer connections with some people, and are more saddened by their passing.

Would you cry more if somebody in your immediate family died than if it was somebody you didn't know? If so, then you should try to wrap your head around people who are saddened by the passing of somebody THEY feel a connection with.

      All the best,
      Michael

Michael I know exactly what you mean. It really hurts that the world was robbed of another genius in a horribly senseless, tragic act of a mad man (who I wish got the chair).

If people can't tell the difference between a bum who never contributed anything and someone who gave so many people great experiences and memories, well I feel sorry they are so shallow.

It's true a soul is a soul and we are all valued equally as far as that goes - I am sure bums have people who loved them too.

John Lennon left two boys and a wife broken hearted, as well as millions of fans.

    We miss you John!

John Lennon and The Beatles were the catalysts of a new era in this society. They changed the entire ethos of a country. That is something worth honoring.
It would be something even more awesome had we been able to keep that ethos alive after his death. We could use more of his sort of revolutionary in our world.

I don't remember where I was, or what year it was -- I just remember standing there stunned for some time when I heard the news -- and the tears of the people in the streets mourning his loss. Perhaps - so many of the tears because they knew that his death heralded the end of a very magical era in our society.

Seriously, WD Mino - the pain isn't just for John - it's for us all.

I wish I was born when Lennon was alive.. I've read almost anything I can get on him on the internet. It's amazing how he commanded so much respect of the people. Certainly a hero!

Well I certainly felt a sense of loss/ hurt when John Lennon died and I still feel a loss when I remember that he is gone.

No, I never met him but he was a part of my childhood and my culture. I grew up with the Beatles being HUGE. I remember them first time the Beatles appeared on TV - I was allowed to stay up to watch as it was such a momentous thing.

I remember hearing on the news that John had been shot and was dead. I could not believe it and thought it had to be wrong, he must still be alive.

Yes, I feel a loss for someone I never met (although years later I married a man who went to school with him) because he was still a part of my life and the whole atmosphere I grew up in.

I'm not sure if it'll show up outside of Australia, but our ABC had a show called "Lennon Naked" on Sunday night.

It's a dramatisation made by the BBC about Lennon's life concentrating on the period around him meeting Yoko, the breakup of the Beatles and his move to America.

You can access it (maybe) on the ABC's iView site (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/). From the top menu select drama and then select Lennon Naked.

If it won't allow you to watch it, check the BBC site, and if not it may be on the BBC's US channel.

Which ever way you get to see it, I thoroughly recommend it. Top script, top acting and a fascinating insight into that period of his life.
