How Badly Do You Want It?

I'm sharing this with my friends in OT because I just love you folks.

There is a HUGE marketing lesson in this non marketing story. Hopefully, you'll
get it.

I recently got back into playing Magic The Gathering. I love the game, but
there are a lot of cards that I don't have because of the many years I didn't
play.

So what I've been doing is going to Ebay and bidding on the cards I want.
Most of them, I've been getting for way under book value.

However, a few cards I am finding are tough to outbid people for and get for
under book. Two auctions just now come to mind.

I sat down and asked myself this question.

"Am I just trying to see if I can get these cards under book (to prove
what a great bidder I am) or do I really want these cards?"

When I realized that I really wanted these cards, that's when I realized
that my conservative bidding was pointless. So what if I pay book or
slightly over? I'm not getting these cards any other way and if I really
want them, I'll pay anything for them...within reason.

So I took the cap off my bids, bid slightly over book and will probably win
both auctions I'm going for right now.

Okay, here's the marketing lesson.

Obviously, I've proven that if you want anything badly enough and there
is a price you can pay to get it, you can get it.

The same thing is true with your marketing. If you want to be successful
bad enough, you'll pay the price...whether it's long hours or spending tons
on ads or whatever it is.

I think the problem with most people who fail at this business is that they
really don't want it bad enough.

So sit yourself down and ask yourself that simple question.

"How badly do I want this?"

You'll get the answer to why you are or aren't having the success you're
looking for.

Am I just trying to see if I can get these cards under book (to prove
what a great bidder I am) or do I really want these cards?
Steven - That is a trick I've used on myself for years when shopping. I love a good bargain - so have to question whether I WANT an item and will USE it - or whether I just want the great deal. Amazing how many things I pass up after asking myself the question.

I've also dropped a coupleniches when I asked myself a similar question and found I had no real interest in those niches. And I picked up a couple niches that might not be quite as instantly profitable but will be good for ME to work in over time.

    It's a good question.

That's good stuff, and true! I've found in the past that I perform best when my back is against the wall. Whenever I get behind on bills and I have to make something happen, that's when I perform. So I've made it a point to perform like my back is always against the wall. Because you just really don't know when this type of living will end. - If a few snot nosed kids can bring down paypal, then who knows what the future brings.

The perspective is a bit different, but I remember some video with Frank Kern where he says "if people really want your product and they don't have the cash... if they REALLY want it, they will get the cash for it somehow." Something along those lines. I believe he had a lot of surfboards in that video.

    Great point, Steven.

That is why you are a success because you care about people. There are many good lessons in this post.
Now to find more people that want things realy bad Oh... I guess if I want to find them bad enough I will!
    Thanks Steve!

Steve, Happy Holidays, ....as usual you hit the nail on the head.

I've felt this way for a long time. Everyone I know who truly commits to make something of this business does so. It just takes some longer than others. BUT, they all have to want it bad....half-heartedness just won;t cut it.

The things you really really want, you get.

Man I spend HOURS on ebay looking at telecaster bodies and necks and ... I have a dream to put together the worlds greatest telecaster, a really beautiful one, and name it after my grandson and call it the "Vincent Rios" Tele.

So One by one, part by part.... I dream. Already have the noiseless pickups and the s1 switching system... the perfect tele has to have those.

Oh yeah....uh "marketing... Yeah I want that real bad because its what gets me to the worlds most perfect telecaster... the one that will be passed down from generation to generation... I am even thinking of having my daughters face carved in it... really elaborate... have you seen some of the artful woodcarving jobs there are out there?

Anyway, marketing is the key to all of those things.

Ps. I can hear the purist saying "The perfect tele is called the 1952"... yeah I agree, but I cant call it the "vincent rios" tele, so I have to create my own and customize it.

Have a non business, business "funded" dream of creating my own "frankencasters"... Long term I want to be doing what you do Steven, eventually just get back to the studio... making music... and running my forum.

...and miles to go before they sleep....

Great lesson.. Success doesn't happen over night and I guess most people in this industry fail because they didn't ask themselves enough to pass the first step. I can also see this story relating to economic of demand

Just manifested a fender TUBE amp I wanted "real bad" today... it will go real nice with the vincent rios tele.

What we get is a mixture of what we want real bad, and what we believe we can have.
