The CIA has apparently set up a task force to assess the impact that Wikileaks has had.

That's right folks, the Wikileaks Task Force.

WTF.

This will probably consist of the same team members who brought us WMD in Iraq.

They did such a good job before you hate to see those people sitting around wasting their talents.

Give me a break! They apparently KNOW that Manning did the crime. They should simply have their security dept, or whatever it is called, check those documents, and see what CAN be harmful. They should treat assange and manning according to THAT since they can NOT prove a negative! They can prove manning saw it. They can prove manning gave it to assange. They can NOT prove that the data was edited before being released.

HECK, they have to do this BEFOREHAND ANYWAY to release the data to people like manning(the risk is SUPPOSED to be KNOWN), and they would have to do it to make a claim or charge manning with anything more than a simple security breech.

It would be STUPID, ILLEGAL, ETC... to go to dell and say "Make your computers more faulty, open a new office, and staff that with MORE support people, to handle the new calls. BTW, DON'T hire people BORN in America, they must be fluent in some language besides English, but we don't care if they speak English.". That is effectively with the government is doing now with ITSELF,and all it has dominion over. It is ALSO trying every trick in the book, which it is REWRITING, to get dominion over even MORE!

And YEAH, I figure you are kidding, but I wanted to say my piece anyway.

You know I always love it when someone gets outed and to know the secret thoughts - well to know the truth, ok -

However this dude is malicious and a menace to our national security.

I hope he gets everything that is coming to him. Looks like he is getting it too. Paypal, Visa even Apple and more are dropping him like the bad news he is.

There are just some secrets that need to be kept secret.

p.s. funny program last night where they report on how he objects that his (alleged) criminal behavior in Sweden is being leaked. Hahahaha. hello?

There's a lot more released that what this one person was supposed to have downloaded.

Some of the things that have been revealed have been pretty interesting

I think the loud cries of outrage have more to do with embarrassment than security. It's definitely an interesting ongoing story - and is someone no one ever expected to happen.

I find often with off the wall things like wikileaks - I tend to not have an opinion but sit back and watch the fireworks. I love fireworks:p

Those trials are usually PUBLIC RECORD! People have a NEED to know about sexual predators, etc... They do that with EVERYONE! The more famous people tend to have that stuff RELEASED! HECK, look at LOHAN!

Of course, the info ASSANGE released was PRIVATE info that is usually SECRET, embarrassing and most is stuff people DON'T need to know, etc...

So he wants everyone to change the rules in HIS favor! Better yet, I'm sure he wants EVERYTHING to be locked up so HE could release things like info about lohan!

It was low level secret - not top secret info.

And as far as embarrassing - tough crap. If our legislators are being corrupt little dickheads and get caught at it - they should be.
If secrets tell about secret maneuvers and plans that actually are a detriment to our ability to keep our people in arms safe and destroy our ability to win wars, etc - then it's something to worry about being made public. But if the info is just embarrassing because someone was acting like a voracious murderous piggy for no reason other than greed or that they don't give a crap - that is stuff we actually NEED to know. We need to get some people out of office if they can't be decent law abiding legislators. Period.

Most of what was released is a major indication that we should have some of our leaders on trial instead of concentrating on shooting the messenger. There was a reason that people risked their OWN safety to get this information out. It's the legislators that are guilty of corruption that are doing the most yelling about "security".

Only if those wars relate to defending your homeland.

If the wars are invasions of foreign lands so that corporates can control (read steal) that country's resources, then the world needs to know about it.

Here's a real American hero that most Americans know nothing about:

Smedley Butler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The best way of looking after the troops is to not send them off on misadventures on behalf of corporate greed (the "Industrial" component of the Military Industrial Complex).

Before anyone accuses me of being anti-American, I love the America as described here:

United States Constitution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And don't love the America described here:

Project for the New American Century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I find it a great shame that the latter is running roughshod over the former.

As far as Wikileaks is concerned, the cat is out of the bag now. These type of leaks are not going to stop. Kill Wikileaks and a thousand more will pop up in its place. Even the Russians are getting in on the act: Russian billionaire joins WikiLeaks to expose corruption

Kill Assange and a thousand more will step up to take his place. The last thing America wants to do right now is to make a "martyr" out of him.

The only way to stop it is for the government(s) to control the internet. PNAC-style America has no respect for your Constitution, especially the First Amendment.

Our own Prime Minister embarassed herself by stating that Assange's actions were "illegal". She has since been on the back foot after being told that he had not done anything illegal, and there was nothing the Australian authorities could charge him with. It also caused a backlash from just about everyone involved in the Australian media, on both the left and right, as well as members of the legal fraternity: Open letter: To Julia Gillard, re Julian Assange - Unleashed (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

          ~

Futhermore, I find it curious that when the Diplomatic Cables started being released, no-one really cared. As you said these were embarassing, but not dangerous.

It was only when Assange revealed that he/they had documents on a "major American bank" that the poop hit the propellor, and calls went out for his "assassination".

          Very curious indeed.

It was at LEAST as embarrassing to INNOCENT people ELSEWHERE. It COULD hurt national security. The US RELIES on allies and people acting as allies. They were STUPID things! The people that posted many of them should have been FIRED. But it should have been kept SECRET.

Most of what was released is a major indication that we should have some of our leaders on trial instead of concentrating on shooting the messenger. Why do people ALWAYS think that way!?!?!? I AGREE that the leaders should be on trial. That does NOT make the messenger innocent. He wasn't a messenger, he was a tabloid scandal artist. GRANTED the message got out, but it got to EVERYONE.

While this may not be a national security threat to the same degree as someone exposing our weapons technology or military logistics, let's face it - if we are to stay out of wars and have good relations it requires DIPLOMACY and FRIENDLY RELATIONS.

I can just see an antagonistic, fascist, megalomaniac 'world leader' sitting talking to one of our diplomats -- big smiles, but now he knows that the US (any one of us) may have called him a butt-head and he is pissed about that. Makes him a lot less likely to want to 'play ball'.

So this HAS compromised our national security in that it may impede us in our ability to NEGOTIATE - whether for peace or trade - it all affects our SECURITY.

You know how people from other countries are always saying 'You Americans' - like them or not our 'leaders' represent all of us and we are all painted with the same brush abroad both by allies and enemies.

By the same token, we can hate what our government has become, but they still represent US. People believe the stereotypes and then they will say 'oh no offense, I love the people, it is just the government that sucks' -- We the people supposedly are the government - at least theoretically.

I hope not, and also hope that America recovers from the mess it is becoming.

The rest of the world really does love you, and yes, is even jealous. However the path you seem to be heading down may not only bring about your downfall, but the rest of the world (at least as we know it) with it.

As I said before, I hope not.

Well, the US has a LOT of enemies. Some are enemies for a reason, but NOT because of anything endemic to the US. Some are enemies for no real reason at all! So I think the idea that the world LOVES the US is far fetched. MAYBE that was kind of true before WWII when the US was more domestic.

As for jealous, it reminded me of The Corbomite Maneuver! The enterprise came up on a ship and eventually was told they would be obliterated. They saw an ugly alien, etc... When they finally were able to go over, they realized the REAL pilot was just a harmless nice guy that even invited one of the enterprise crew members to join him on HIS trek. HEY, that might have been the root for a nice sequel! 8-)

Well, the rest of the world SAW a RICH nation, etc.... The fact is that the US isn't all that rich. At least those nations that are in the same league now mostly realize that. But some now see that ugly alien. They US is REALLY supposed to be more like that jovial person.

Couldn't agree more about the banks/financial institutions - one in particular that we all love to hate. BLATANT Conflict of interest with carte blanche.

They and their cronies caused the entire near financial collapse that has rippled world-wide and they benefited from doing so -

I have even seen once where the head honcho literally lost the bank and had to take pennies on the dollar to sell it off due to his little back room misdeeds.

Poor man was asked to leave the wreckage and as his punishment all he got was something like 50 million for the great bad job he had done. (no gold watch though).

Thousands of people lost their jobs in subsequent 'workforce reductions' to pay for that. Thousands of others lost most of their retirement funds as they did in the recent recession caused by this same ilk on a much larger scale.

Make no mistake I am acutely aware that these are the neo-fascists and the 'enemy within'. Do you see any of them doing time? I think not. (and that is the scariest part). They are doing business as usual.

        New definition of 'bank robbers'....
