    That is not it.

Your grade school's network administrator just blocked the Skype IP address from the school's internal network.

I'm in Pennsylvania, but I was trying to talk to someone in Spain through Skype, and it didn't work for either of us. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one!

I had an interview this morning when I couldn't access Skype. I re-booted and nada then went to Twitter and saw the world throwing a hissyfit about it.

It's annoying and frustrating but it's the first time Skype has been down for me in several years of using it.

But man they're really down, down! Went to their blog for an update:

    Caleb,

There's nothing 'official' on the Skype site, but they are having problems. I don't think they are totally down, but they are having connection issues.

I don't have access at the moment.

According to the evolutionists we're all monkeys. Except I doubt monkeys are sitting around bitching about their skype not working. They're more interested in picking the fleas off their mate.

So, we were all monkeys but we now whine about skype being down because we have metamorphosed into something less or greater than flea-picking monkeys.

You know, we Jews don't believe ANY option ends with you burning forever in a lake of fire. It's the same God and the same morality and the same general concern for your fellow man, but instead of burning forever in a lake of fire you just walk around feeling guilty all the time.

Honestly, I don't see why anybody wouldn't want to be Jewish. But whatever the reason, it's probably my fault.

My favorite "monkey" quote was from Christopher Walken in the movie, "Prophesy".

    LOL! THOSE COMMENTS ABOVE!

My Skype is down as well.

Is there anyone with any alternative list here, which can do what Skype does? (other than Google Voice)

I use Skype to call my coach who resides in The U.S. most of the time.

Just in case if there's anything happen to my Skype, I can go on and fire up the backup VOIP service (or whatever it's called) and call my coach's office fixed line.

    King Shiloh, any recommendation?

Skype isn't a network like a conventional phone or IM network - instead, it relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running. Some of these computers are what we call 'supernodes' - they act a bit like phone directories for Skype. If you want to talk to someone, and your Skype app can't find them immediately (for example, because they're connecting from a different location or from a different device) your computer or phone will first try to find a supernode to figure out how to reach them.

Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype. As Skype relies on being able to maintain contact with supernodes, it may appear offline for some of you.

What are we doing to help? Our engineers are creating new 'mega-supernodes' as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal.
Skype is working fine here. It came back about 45 minutes ago, so I'm guessing the service should be filtering out to everyone in the next few hours.
        Dennis thanks for sharing that!

I know it won't work for you. But over here, it is getting to be big.

It is a little box about two inches long that we plug into a USB jack on our computers, and as long as we have high-speed internet, we simply plug our phone line into the Magic Jack box.

We are able to call anyone in the US or Canada for like $20 per year, after paying $40 for the first year of service and the jack.

Bill, actually the Magic Jack will work for anyone outside of the US as long as they have decent high-speed internet.

I have heard of soldiers from Iraq being able to call back home to the US using the Magic Jack. Of course, in Aiden's case, we'd have to send one out to him to use as I don't believe they sell it outside of the US.

Ah, thanks for the info.. But I still find out that "la la la la la la" part interesting and funny, I wonder what does that mean, she didn't want to listen to what you've got to say, for some reason?

Well, the cable company who provides my high-speed internet considers Magic Jack to be one of their competitors.

I bet the cable company managers are always whining about how the Magic Jack is stealing revenues from them, by offering the VOIP service for pennies on the dollar.

Bill, are you aware that there is a huge Magic Jack competitor which essentially offers the same service as MJ...but for free?

It even allows you to call Canada for free, and I'm pretty sure that's an important feature to you.

I know I can basically do the same thing with Skype, yes. And for free.

But I don't know yet whether skype will let me have a phone number so that the land-line locked people can call me on skype.

Edit: I only call Canada when I want to talk to my old friends up there, or the occasional grade school student. You did know that I lived there for a year, right?

Bill, I'm not referring to Skype. I was actually alluding to Google Voice instead. It allows you to call both the US and Canada for free, and it also provides you with a virtual phone number to take incoming calls and enables you to forward it to a real number of your choosing, if you want it to.

Well, now that you know, you had best sign up quickly for a choice Google Voice number. I'm not sure if Stillwater area codes are available, but I do know that OKC 405 ones are.

I actually have two Magic Jack numbers. One is a 405 Stillwater number. The other is a 405 OKC number.

Then my cell phone rings on a 580 area code, local for anyone in northern Oklahoma.

Ok, so at worst you'll end up with a free OKC 405 number that can be forwarded to any of your other numbers. The only issue here I see is that you might have trouble keeping track of all of them.

Ok, I feel duty-bound to let you know that Google Voice may not be free outside of the US (I'm referring to the free calls), but you should be able to access its other features. Just sign up and let us know what you have access to, I'm curious myself as to what Google Voice offers over there in Nigeria.

                      Ok This is really something.

I stopped using GV because of the video quality.

I guess I have to check it out again! Thanks Paul!

Bill, for less than $10 a month I have a land-line accessible phone number on Skype with unlimited free calls to the US and Canada.

Plus my Google Voice number forwards to Skype and Skype forwards to my mobile.

If I'm not at my PC, the call comes to my phone wherever I am just like they dialed me directly.

If my phone is off or out of battery or otherwise inaccessible (or Skype is down), Google Voice records the voice mail AND sends a speech-to-text email to my GMail account.

So the second I get back online, whether with my phone or my PC, the message is already in my email... which is the first thing I check.

Seriously, dude, you need Google Voice. Go sign up.

I'm totally hooked on Google Voice myself, I can barely imagine myself existing without it.

Google basically gave Skype the middle finger by launching its virtual phone service on Voice/gmail and making it free, and I am almost certain it caused mass defections to GV.

And the good news is that Google is making it free for another whole year - Google Voice Extends Free Calling Through 2011 -- Google Voice -- InformationWeek

Given two products, one from Microsoft and one from someone else, my decision process goes like this.

If either product is clearly superior, I choose that one.

If both products are roughly equivalent, I choose the Microsoft product.

Case in point, I have both an Android phone and an HTC Fuze running Windows Mobile.

The HTC Fuze makes it a right pain in the arse to get my email, and if it ever has a problem it will stop trying until I tell it that yes, I know it didn't get my email because I was out of the service area.

The Android came out of the box and started syncing with my GMail account in a couple of minutes. If it ever has a problem getting my email, it ignores the problem completely because most email problems go away by themselves.

So even though I really like Windows Mobile and seriously do miss having Office Mobile 2007 on my phone, I carry and use the Android. Because it is clearly superior, in a way that makes a material difference in my day to day life.

But when I was still working at Microsoft, I carried my HTC Fuze into the office and plugged the USB cable into my workstation, and the corporate network automatically jumped into my phone and configured everything for me so it all just worked.

So if I was still working at Microsoft, that would be clearly superior, and I'd be carrying my HTC. But outside of a well-run corporate network deployment, Windows Mobile on HTC devices is insanely complicated and needlessly difficult.

And while I know you'll just nod knowingly and say "of course he says that," most of the problems are the OEM's fault. Device manufacturers have broad latitude to configure Windows Mobile for the user experience they want to present, and HTC generally does a crap job.

But then I reckon the security they use on the inside is better than the security they offer me in their email apps.

Security is a process, not a product. Email is insecure by nature. If you want it secure, you have to set the policies and establish the configurations that make sense for your own purposes and environment.

For example, all email at Microsoft is exchanged over a secure TLS encrypted channel. This is not hard to configure on the client OR the server, but the average ISP is still letting people connect merrily over a raw TCP socket and send their password unencrypted over the public internet, and a shocking number of ISPs don't have any more secure way to do it.

So instead, you have to logon to your ISP through SSH and set up a .forward file that sends your email to a better host. If you have one, of course, which many people don't.

Which means that Outlook and Outlook Express need to come out of the box preconfigured for easy connection to these insecure ISPs, or you can't use them. And since most ISPs will let you do this, even if it's not recommended, most people don't bother to set things up securely. And because most people don't bother, most ISPs don't even tell you it can be done... let alone how to configure it so it works with their servers.

But if you're running a corporate network with an Exchange server, there's plenty of documentation out there on how to click a few buttons and force everyone on your network to use secure email connections... and the group policy settings on Windows Server will even go out and set up everyone's Outlook installs for them.

What's that? You're not running Windows Server with Exchange and Outlook? Well, call the people who built your system, server, and client software. I'm sure there's some way to make all this happen, and surely they wouldn't all just point their fingers at one another trying to lay blame for who makes it not work.

Of course, given that Google both runs Gmail and owns Android, you will not find any other phone operating systems that are as tightly integrated with Google services.

If the majority of your cloud services are run by Google, then getting an Android phone is basically a no-brainer. I have a HTC Evo 4G myself, and the tight integration with my Google services means that things just work from the get-go without really having to do anything else but enter your Google ID credentials.

And given that Microsoft both makes Windows Mobile and operates the Microsoft corporate network...

I've always been reasonably frustrated that I can't get a single decent hub device that works well with whatever I choose. I can get an iPhone, but it only works well with Apple stuff. I can get Windows Mobile, but it only works well with Microsoft stuff. And I can get Android, but it only works well with Google stuff.

Of the three, Windows Mobile does the best job of working well with other stuff, but still - like you say - if you primarily work with Apple or Google stuff, it's just stupid to try and use a Windows Mobile device for that when an iPhone or Android would work so much better.

A shocking number of Microsoft managers carry iPhones and complain about them. A similar number of Microsoft engineers carry Windows Mobile devices and complain about them. But in the Mobile and Entertainment Division (MED), where we know the most about mobile devices, most people carry both and nobody complains.

You can probably understand now why Bill has banned iPhones and all Apple devices at his household...

This slick integration of all services is obviously by design, as these companies all have vested interests in their entire product-and-services ecosystem.

I'm sure they don't make it easy for third parties to integrate their devices within the ecosystem, as they want consumers to stay in the family ecosystem and become committed all the way.

I don't see this scenario changing anytime soon, so it's really a matter of picking your poison and sticking to it.

Actually, the problem is a little different than that.

Over here you have a device. Let's call it Sliced Bread Mobile, or SBM. It's the greatest mobile device EVAR.

And over here, you have an application. Let's say it's an email application. It's called Sliced Bread Email, or SBE. It's pretty good.

Now, because SBM is a mobile device and people want to get their email on it, the people working on SBM at Sliced Bread Incorporated build in all this special technical stuff so anyone and everyone who wants to put their email program on SBM can do it easily.

And then, they say "we need someone to put their email program on SBM to make sure it really is easy and simple and anyone can do it." So they say "hmm, which email program development team can we talk to without revealing confidential information about our new device to a competitor?"

Duh. Sliced Bread Email! So off they go to the SBE team, and they say "hey, use our simple and easy API to make SBE work on SBM, so we know it's the simplest and easiest thing EVAR."

And the SBE team does. They start integrating, and sending the SBM team feedback, and asking for the features they want, and the SBM team puts them in and makes this just the most awesome way to integrate ANY email program with SBM.

And then, just to be 100% certain it really does work THAT WELL, they walk away and write a tiny little simple email program which they turn around and integrate into SBM with four lines of code. It takes less than ninety seconds. They actually time it and get it on video.

Now they run off to Awesome Software Company (ASC). The SBM guys say "look at this video - you can add support for SBM to your mobile email program in less than ninety seconds!"

                                And ASC says "so what?"

And after a long, uncomfortable silence, the ASC guy continues.

"Look, I'm sure your new device is great, okay? But I honestly do not give a damn about it. My software is already on fifty million phones, and I don't have to spend ninety seconds adding support for yours.

"Because once I do, then your phone has to go in my test lab, and then it's not just about your support code that we wrote in ninety seconds. No, now we have to test each and every feature on your phone, in addition to the other eight models we already have in our test labs.

"So what you think is ninety seconds of developer time is really a 12.5% increase in our test budget every release cycle, which - if you had bothered to ask, or even really cared - you would know is already over a hundred and fifty million dollars annually.

"So what you are really coming over here saying is not 'give us ninety seconds of developer time,' but 'spend another twenty million dollars a year,' and to be perfectly honest you can piss off."

The way I see it, Google cannot be trusted, so their products are inherently inferior because of it.

I've always found it really, really weird that people think Google cannot be trusted.

                            What did Google do?

I mean, to the best of my ability to discern, the only thing Google has ever done is collect a shocking quantity of data that was already publicly available... and index it so people could easily find it.

Microsoft, on the other hand, used to actively threaten OEMs with price discrimination if they didn't run their business like Microsoft told them. Which wasn't that evil in the 1970s, because that's how everyone did business, but twenty years later it was simply not acceptable at all.

So Microsoft went to court, and they lost (which they should have), and they said "we are going to have to change the way we do business." So they did.

Meanwhile, all Google has ever done is shine a light on the things you didn't want anyone to see. You took a crap in a shoebox and sculpted it into a little face, and you thought it was funny so you took a picture and sent it to some of your friends. Then the cute girl down the road types "crap face" into Google, and up pops that picture, and she sees the distinctive ring on your hand holding the shoebox. "OMFG, I know that guy," she thinks. And now, whenever you talk to her, she knows you crapped in a shoebox and sculpted a face.

                            Why is that Google's fault?

Maybe you and Dan can JV.

You can teach the can and string technique.

And Dan can teach us about the oh-so-ancient tool called email.

For those who haven't read this, it's from Skype:
Skype isn’t a network like a conventional phone or IM network – instead, it relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running. Some of these computers are what we call ‘supernodes’ – they act a bit like phone directories for Skype. If you want to talk to someone, and your Skype app can’t find them immediately (for example, because they’re connecting from a different location or from a different device) your computer or phone will first try to find a supernode to figure out how to reach them.

Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype. As Skype relies on being able to maintain contact with supernodes, it may appear offline for some of you.

What are we doing to help? Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes’ as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal.
Skype is working fine here. It came back about 45 minutes ago, so I'm guessing the service should be filtering out to everyone in the next few hours.

Mine has been working all along, just not perfectly.

Some messages are coming in anywhere from 15 min to 1 hour after they are sent to me.

        Same here.

But, I never quit Skype to try to log back in again. I assumed that wouldn't make a difference anyway.

I'm so sorry to see that, Aiden. Google Voice is sooo convenient and makes multiple numbers so much easier to manage, among other things.

Perhaps you could get someone to send you the Magic Jack, which does almost as much?

One thing really nice about Google Voice is that if Gmail is your primary email, you can make and receive calls right from within your web browser in the Gmail tab/window.

Right now, I want to curse out all the "big guns" but it's hard to get in touch with them. Here's a plan though that has the potential to work:

Ok here's an idea, we all call up Skype and curse out everyone at the support desk. These guys will finally get sick of this abuse and will either 1. quit their jobs or 2. Riot. If they quit their job, skype will be forced to take some action to make this stop and if they Riot, well same thing.

    What do you think

      What do you think

      EDIT: I have no life
We should also harass them on their Twitter account, and let them know about our extreme displeasure at the way they're handling things today.

My skype's down too...thought maybe my satellite provider was limiting bandwidth-sucking apps because of the new net neutrality rulings, but I guess not.

It was up and down for me, until I followed Skype's suggestions on how to fix it. Since then, I've not been able to get on at all.

I haven't seen any kind of confirmatory messages about it, but I have seen claims that it is to do with WikiLeaks. So, no idea whether it's true or somebody tried to get a rumor going.

I know a number of folks that are really stuck without Skype up and running. I'm wonering if it is a widespread event as AOL was having some severe issues yesterday fo rme for about 60 minutes and I saw that some people have not had AOL access for about 72 hours.

Yea! It's up for me now! I can make calls, but it's weird because I can't get my messages send out on time, and the Skype icons on the system bar seems to be keep on trying to connect (while I was connected and talking with my friend already)

There must be something wrong with Skype, still.
