HELP! I get an email saying...

This is a REALLY SERIOUS matter and I need your help warriors.

I basically own webcopywritersblog.com and I got an email from a person known as Allen Zhang regarding domain names that end with other extensions for "webcopywritersblog".

He wrote an email to me at my email address saying:

(It's very urgent, Please transfer this email to your CEO or appropriate person, thanks)
Dear CEO,

We are the department of Asian Domain registration service in china. have something to confirm with you. We formally received an application on December 23, 2010, one company which self-styled "Aoyi Investment Co., Ltd" were applying to register "webcopywritersblog" as Network Brand and following domain names:
webcopywritersblog.asia
webcopywritersblog.cn
webcopywritersblog.co.in
webcopywritersblog.com.cn
webcopywritersblog.com.hk
webcopywritersblog.com.tw
webcopywritersblog.hk
webcopywritersblog.in
webcopywritersblog.net.cn
webcopywritersblog.org.cn
webcopywritersblog.tw
After our initial checking, we found the name were similar to your company's, so we need to check with you whether your company has authorized that company to register these names. If you authorized this, we will finish the registration at once. If you did not authorize, please let us know within 7 workdays, so that we will handle this issue better. Out of the time limit we will unconditionally finish the registration for "Aoyi Investment Co., Ltd".

Hi Allen,

I have not authorized any company to register the domain names mentioned.

He sent me 3 emails after that to which I have not replied:

As soon as receiving the application of Aoyi Investment Co., Ltd, we checked and found "webcopywritersblog" is your company's using name. that's why we sent email to you. we don't hope the domains will be registered without your awareness. but you should know that the domain names regisration is open in the world, Aoyi Investment Co., Ltd also has the right to apply for the available domain names. you only own the preferential rights to register them.

If you think Aoyi Investment Co., Ltd application will effect your benefit, we can help your company dispute their application and then register them under your own name. pls let us know soon, or else we think it as your waiver. In that time we don't bear any responsibility, Because we had informed you.

After 4 days I receive another email:

Dear Ronak,

Notice: Regarding the Domain name dispute and registration case, we did not receive any of your reply until now. Concerning the mentioned Domains names and Network Brand please confirm whether you need to register those names by yourselves? If need, please let us know in time, we can send an application form to you. If you think the registration of that company or the use of following domain names will not bring any negative effect to your company, I suggest you can give up these domain names, then we will accept that company application unconditionally. Further questions please contact me in time.

I received another email in the last 6 hours:

Notice: Hi, I am Allen. We had discussed the case about disputing your company's domain names and Network Brand. You have never registered these domain names and Network Brand, and I had told you that the domain name registration is open. The dispute period will come soon. If your company does not register these domain names and Network Brand, we will finish aforesaid company registration within 2 workdays. that company will become the legal owner of these domain names in the world. We had notified you, so we are not responsible for any dispute question about your intellectual property right and trademark after they succeed in registration. If you have any questions, pls contact us within 2 workdays.

My question is:

are those prospective owners trying to take up my brand ownership of WebCopyWritersBlog.com as well? Is my domain name webcopywritersblog.com and intellectual property rights of my .com domain name under threat?

How do I deal with this?

        Just had to deal with this with one of my hosting customers.

        It's basically a scam to trick you into buying domains you don't need.

        The company in question doesn't exist, and domain registrars have nothing to do with trademarks or copyrights.

        Do not reply, and if you have concerns, contact a competent IP lawyer to get proper answers.

    NEVER reply to those "strange" letters.
    It would be better if you contact a lawyer who will give you legal advice and will tell you how to deal those letters.

    Here's what I'd do. I'd try and contact the company that is buying up all those domains and see what you can get for the .com

    It seems that the site isn't very active (judging by your archives) so you could always get a new domain.

    If they offered you a decent price for it, it might work out.

      I am not willing to sell it at least right now. If I get $25,000 I might sell it.

      The email address attached with this domain name is important to me because I have registered at various places as an affiliate and have even used that email to purchase products.

        That's a standard scam - just ignore it.

        All the scammer wants to do is panic you into purchasing all the other domain extentions.

        There is no client who either has or wants the other domains. Check to see if they have been purchased. If they have, at least you will know who the scam company is and have the satisfaction of knowing they have spent money on worthless domains.

        As others have said, it is a well known scam. Ignore Godaddy - 95% of their advice is useless; I have hundreds of names with them for several years. The average Godaddy employee knows nothing about what they are advising on. Even my exec rep is as much use as a chocolate fireguard, so don't waste any money looking into this.

    I received a similar email some time ago concerning one of our domains and forgot about it. Some time later, I checked and these so called domain registration people never registered anything like my domain and I have never heard from them again. I guessed that they were trying on some sort of spam/illegal activity.

      Rosetrees gave you the first accurate answer. Many of us have had those same emails - but when you look at the domains listed...those aren't domains you want in the first place.

      You have received multiple emails because you answered the first one. That told the scammers you had a live email address and didn't know they were scammers.

      Do not answer them again - just delete their messages and they'll go away. Godaddy will not give you legal advice - and you don't need an attorney for this one.

    BY now enough people have told you its a scam, ignore it.
    Another popular one is for them to send a physical letter to your address with a bill saying you have to pay "X" amount of dollars to renew your domain.
    It should go directly into the round trash filing cabinet.

      I just got one of those postal "renew your domain" envelopes yesterday - dropped it in the trash bin on the back to the house.

      Those have been coming for years - apparently they work on gullible people even today.

        Good cripes - the first time I got one of those I fried. After speaking to my host and finding out it was a scam I sent the letter on to the FTC.

        Ronak - I get these all the time......or used to. All I do is send them back an email stating:

        "Thank you for your "notice". I have sent it on to the proper authorities.

        I would think if they are actually in China, that note would make them S**T bricks. China has been known to execute scammers if they have stolen enough money via scams.
