Ever sold a car with Craigslist? How to get $XX,xxx from buyer?

I wasn't sure where to post this... but my father in law just posted his truck on Craigslist (his first craigslist posting) and he's not sure how to get the money from the buyer.

He's selling his nice truck for over $24,xxx and to be honest, I've never sold anything for that much on craigslist. I sold my old '73 Plymouth for $2800 a few years ago, and I just had the guy pay in cash. (I didn't want to take a check, sign and hand over the papers & then get ripped off...)

But I didn't know what to tell him about getting that much from a buyer for his truck...?

Anyone got any advice / experience with something like that?

I'd appreciate it, thanks!

Go to a bank... have the check issued in front of you... or accept cash only.

Best way is have the buyer go to the bank, with you, and cash the check (You have no part in that transaction) Then you, take said cash, and deposit it into an account or have a certified check issued.

Checks are very easy to make, there are too many scammers out there. So be safe.

A good friend sold a motorcycle for 8k, he was given a certified bank check, he cashed it, and deposited the money. 6 days later the bank called and said we need the money back or we were going to draw it from his personal account. (this was about 6 years ago) but he had to give the money back. 3 years later, they found the bike, and the buyer, who was a police officer in Canada (go figure a law enforcement guy) He got the bike back then and the guy went to jail for multiple accounts of the same thing.

I've done tons of buying and selling on craigslist.

    Rule #1 - CASH ONLY

Rule #1 - In person ONLY. They come to you if you're selling, you don't go to them

As far as getting good money, people on craigslist are looking for deals, bargains. If you're going to sell the truck, craigslist will get you the minimum profit, because that's what people expect from Craigslist.

However, when a good deal is posted it goes fast so you should have no trouble selling it.

The truck I drive now I bought from a guy on Craigslist. I've also sold vehicles on Craigslist.

Craigslist is a place for deals, if you don't have a great deal, somebody else listing their vehicle does.

      That is a good one.

The problem with a truck on craigs list is that they don't separate them from the cars. I'm not sure what it is like where you live, but in LA (CA) you have to read about 200 car listings to get to one truck.

Ebay classifieds are also really good from the buyers point of view. You can narrow down the search to just vans and pickups.

It's not what you asked, but ebay classified is free, so that is a bit of extra exposure. They are much better organized than CL, but they don't have nearly the amount of ads.
