"The greatest global boom of all time has barely begun. Over the next forty years, economic growth will quicken yet further as the rising powers of Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America reach their full stride

Crunching everything from fertility rates to schooling levels and the rule of law, HSBC (LSE: HSBA.L - news) predicts that the world's economic output will triple again by 2050..."

In from a huge global bank who is a major sub-prime lender in the US. Yeah, I expect HSBC will be profitable - not so sure about the rest of us.

Rosy scenarios don't always work out. There's a big push right now in the US and perhaps globally to "talk up" future economic growth. Problem is, there's no sign in the marketplace such growth is occurring.

Big financials are in profit - nothing new about that.

In 2050, the U.S. will look like its Afghan and Iraqi satellites. China will be broken and we will spend much of their time looking for food, that is, if we are still here .HSBC will not be there to comment on their stupid predictions!

How can they include the US in that one when the dollar is just about to receive the boot as the world reserve currency? If you have pics of the Arkansas shores in the aftermath of the oil spills, they will better reflect the look of the US when our currency loses that position.

My nutty brother said as much about the American dollar. I never know how seriously to take him. He believes that well-organized conspiracies of a mass scale are taking place. One major and disturbing reason to question his credibility is that he was an editor at Forbes magazine for several years.

Probably we could say that history keeps repeating itself again and again.

Empires go through the same cycle.

        In what cycle are we?

The dollar is ALREADY losing support! So I would say BELIEVE HIM!

Would be rare pics - Arkansas doesn't have shores. Gulf states are Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

LMAO - I meant Louisiana. Ah well - it'll all look the same anyhow if our dollar tanks.

Steve - actually losing fertility is what we need right now to help us rebound. Our country has a carrying capacity of 200 million - we are exceeding that and it's straining every resource we have. Plus, our system was not set up for a 100% population workforce. The more people we cram into it, the more problems we are having.

I HAVE been saying the same myself for probably better than 20 years. But that article figured more people meant more productivity and thus more success. But you are right! Asking for more assets, or land, is DUMB! Cutting expenses, or population, is easier and more likely to succeed.

I guess I slipped up. I tried to post a response here. Suffice it to say, I think marladenis is probably right. And HEYSAL, GOOD POINT! I had forgotten about that. 8-( And the IMAGERY!? WOW!

That HSBC should even TRY to guess what will happen in 40 years! There are over a dozen MAJOR possible gamechangers on the horizon! They will likely come at one of 4 points, for the US!

    1. ANY MOMENT, and potentially SOON!(Money, debt, fedfunds, etc....)
    2. Around april of this year.(When people realize how they have been affected this year. ALSO the main deadline for ANY relief this tax year)
    3. Around 2012(The election, etc...)
    4. Between 2013 and 2017(Various laws and taxes go into effect)

I never clicked return. 8-( Here is part of whaat I was GOING to write:

They START OUT talking about Malthusian threats, and THEN say This will happen DESPITE the Malthusian "theory"! INCREDIBLE! I mean to say that starvation would likely INCREASE and THEN say that US fertility, which is DECREASING by the way, will make it a leader? On WHAT planet!?

Frankly, MY predictions would be different, and I would think the boom is really going to happen later. HECK, people NOW are still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

They have to do it all the time to some degree. But 40 years into the future at a time when the economies are in TURMOIL!? NO WAY! The US dollar has ALREADY lost value as THE currency. How long will it be before it is almost anything BUT the dollar. Things have ALREADY started down that path. What 5 years ago most would have said is not possible has STARTED!

I wouldn't even try to predict the economy 5 years into the future. I could see some things MAYBE happing that could even make things IMPROVE in 2-3 years, or even a few months. Other things look REALLY bad, right down to the dollar even potentially being worthless.

Well, that is the price of dogma taking the place of reason, logic, and science.

Reason, Logic, Science? For the US government? You're KIDDING, RIGHT!?

I could give you reasons such as places saying they won't accept dollars anymore, or talk about commodities being bought with other currencies. Or Science, like the fact that if supply outstrips demand, the value drops, or that if the dollar isn't a main currency, it will lose value. Or how about logic indicating that the other two point to bad times ahead?

Very interesting and optimistic outlook from HSBC.

But it jives with my long term prediction of the USA slowly and painfully turning this present day mess around by 2016-2020.

I doubt the dollar will cease to be the world's reserve currency anytime in the next 20-30 years...

...as the euro can no longer be counted on as a backup and folks in China, GB and a host of other countries can't get enough of our debt which IMHO is still very manageable.

Investment in U.S. debt is still the safest investment in the world according to the big lenders.

The people of the U.S. are going through a historically tough time but we're not anywhere near done yet.

If we can get through this dangerous period without the nation-killing coup de grace being applied we can come out of this period poised to generate another American golden age.

I think its wonderful and I am actually considerably more optimistic than Hong Kong Bank.

The next 40 years will be truly miraculous.

We will have an entirely new civilization that spans our solar system and communicates with other worlds.

    Not to be missed.

    Really interesting article.

I agree the world would love to get rid of its reliance on the US and the dollar, but there just aren't any good alternatives so the dollar will probably lose some value, but isn't going to be out of the picture any time soon.

2050 however is just too far to make predictions. I always think back to someone telling me as a child that there would be a hotel on the moon by 2010 and laugh. It is just impossible to predict the future as the unexpected will always happen.

There are a lot of potential problems that could impact this rosy prediction for example some people are even predicting that there may not be enough drinking water for everyone.
