I know I know, it's just not easy enjoying them on a day like today when they can't even be in the same room without fighting - grrrr.

I'm going to take them down the beach for a walk and a swim and hopefully burn off some of their energy.

So true! Being the 22 year old "baby" of the family, I can honestly say that my parents (especially my dad) both often talk about missing the "good ole days" when my brother, sister, and I drove them up the wall with our shenanigans and fighting.

Stay impartial and resist the urge to choose sides. Chances are, you haven't observed a sibling fight from the beginning so you may be missing the big picture.

If the fight between siblings is verbal, try to work as a mediator instead of a judge. Ask the kids to be quiet and offer each one an opportunity to communicate the issue to the other. Encourage the children to come to a mutual solution that they both agree with. Offer suggestions and guide the conversation to help the siblings resolve the issue. Praise the children for resolving the issue on their own.

If the fight is physical, immediately separate the children and send both to a time out. Since you may not have seen the entire altercation, it is not fair to just discipline one child. When you discipline both, you are sending a no tolerance message for physical violence.

So far today all fights have been verbal - but so petty and over stupid things like taking up too much room on the sofa and who sat down first, etc etc.

The problem with my kids when they do fight physically is that the oldest is 2 inches taller than me and the second one is the same height as me - it's getting a bit scary now separating their fights. I still do it but it's not easy! My second child has behavior problems and is quite violent so it's not easy dealing with him.

Oh boy, your children really are channeling my two. Happens here all the time. How old are yours? Mine are 8 1/2 and nearly 11.

We've also got a good dose of cabin fever which isn't helping. It's still pouring with rain and the water levels are rising, so there's not a lot of outdoors play happening. I made them come out for a run with me this morning and that was really nice, and burned a bit of their energy.

Only 1 1/2 weeks of school holidays left, I think. Be strong.

Mine are 13, 11 and 8. The 8 year old is pretty good but the older 2 just don't stop! I think we have 3 weeks left of school holidays here, I think we go back on the 31st Jan.

I would hate to be over there with the rain and the floods. Although my kids are actually banned from playing outside at the moment because they keep fighting so much and the middle one (with the behavior issues) has a foul mouth on him. His foul mouth is embarrassing me, the neighbours must think we're feral, so they are banned until they can play out there without fighting - which will probably be never

The beach this afternoon did help a bit though, they were a bit more settled after a couple hours walking and swimming.

    Brings back so many memories...

My older sister used to tease me, tickle me and provoke me until I exploded. Then she played the innocent angel when our parents came to separate us. I always got the blame. A girl would never start a fight, right?

Well I have 2 teens, actually my son is 13 and daughter 18 and they also get into verbal fights but rarely now. Either that or they get along very well for a few hours or they simply both do their own things apart from each other... I find it easier since they grew up. A few years ago, it could get physical sometimes so I hear you.

Get a video camera and record their outbursts that drive you crazy.
Then when they get older, play them the tapes and tell them it's payback time. After that just look at them and smile. Trust me it will drive them crazy.

Better still, play the videos to their boy/girlfriends when they're brought home to meet Mum for the first time.

If I ever get the camera out they stop! I've never been able to capture them on video - maybe I need to set some hidden cameras up around the house

It's boredom - and complicated by the problems of your middle child.

Sounds like vacation boredom is getting to them. Need physical activity, don't they? Do you have a grandparent close by? If so - ship one of them off for a few days. If being where the neighbors can hear is a problem - find a place where no one can hear and take them there for a long run.

Even sibs who love each other can get sick of each other when they are together all day every day...and Mom has to listen to it.

...and count down the hours until vacation is over:p

I have been taking them out for long walks and to the beach for walks and swims. My kids just fight non stop even when they are at school, the minute they get in the car to come home they start fighting!

Their grandparents won't take them My Mum works and my in-laws just don't take them. Their always have their other grandchildren but not ours The oldest one's are the favorites - they even babysit their dog!

My son went back a week ago; they are now doing mid year finals. He turned 14 a month ago and one of his xmas presents was an alarm clock (extremely loud-have never found one that woke him up before).
Now, the ever-so-responsible bugger gets himself up, ready and out the door --
I get to sleep in. It's quiet when I get up and I feel like I forgot to do something important..............
Some would say it is past due at 8th grade, but I tend to spoil him as long as possible cause it all seems so fleeting (and you can't go back).

Believe it or not, there may very well come a day you wish they were there bickering over some silly something......because that too, will pass

Heh, I personally would NEVER have kids. I am a terrible, TERRIBLE uncle to my niece and nephew, so that would make me an even more terrible, TERRIBLE father. My financial state is, well, non-existant, and I wouldn't have the mental toughness to be a father.

My ex use to say our kids would argue over who had the most dirt on their shoes...lol. They constantly found something to fuss at each other about. But they also played together and created games that were so complicated that no one else could play with them. Sometimes they seemed to speak their own "sibling" language.
There were moments they nearly sent me off the deep end.

But they're 22 and 18 now and still very close.
