Hey Mike. How R U?

I was writing in this post

http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...tml#post285089

and i am like why am i telling this thread my technical problems, fishing for technical answers?

I realized I was writing it as if you were going to see it since probably you would know what I am talking about.

{...but then i have never seen you in that thread}

What do you think about this issue - what do you think could possibly be going on, just off the top of your head?

No big deal but if you see this, I would appreciate your input...

Thanks!
PaX

OK now down to the OT Jukebox Catalog Project:

Just FYI - The Original Jukebox thread is completely cataloged.

I am now on page 4 of this one - I am doing even numbers, Rich is doing Odd. So I don't know about you Rich but I got 4-6-8 - and then we are caught up and can just play it by ear to keep it up as long as this thred goes.

It really slows the process up when I come to one that has 3 videos in one post.

It is really a lot easier if there is only one video per post - (so that the post's permalinks can be displayed) {so when there are 3 videos it is the same link for all 3 - not good- have to go to youtube for each one}

Probably it wouldn't matter that much, except it is made worse by my ongoing problem with frozen explorer windows - not just on this thread (it's now as bad as why we closed the 1st one) but also anytime i have youtube going and the forum thread and my other programs - the videos crash all the windows.

Not sure whether I will upgrade ie7 or just reinstall it.

I think this is an issue with my processor (?) and/or graphics adapter(?). I have sufficient RAM and fast internet connectivity/Pen D

- but now i remember the guy from Dell Computer asking me if i am a gamer and i said no - well i think me cheaping out on the processor(?) or graphics adapter(?) affects both games and videos. I have also recently noted I have issues with some online games causing the same lock ups.

...who knew

anyway sorry -

PaX means peace in Latin. The X looks like a cross on it's side. one of my domains has netX. kind of half the cross and half the x-files and 1/3 netXtreme.

nobody ever got it and one guy said oh X-rated. NOT.

Mike Wright is one of the UK old time OT'ers but he is in and out nowadays so I want to try to catch him - because nobody else is getting my fishing expedition to get technical advice.

Mike is good - he will maybe write a paragraph that will have possible solution. hint hint hint

      Hi Pat,
Think I will change to being the Scarlet Pimpernel.

There is loads of stuff posted all round the net about
freezing windows in IE .... plus some are still having
problems with XP SP3 and Vista. Google is full of
      results on these issues.

Just now and again ...even after latest updates ... IE7
locks up with multiple tabs open ... but not so far with
      just one window open ???????

To be honest, it has not been sufficient of an issue
for me to look for a fix .... and Firefox works fine for
      me ... as does "ctrl-alt-del".

Maybe a fix somewhere on Microsoft site/technet etc.
Sorry no better ideas at this time

Everywhere including the OT seems to have gone very
quiet since the recession and election ....hmmmmm.

Its all doom and gloom in the UK .... I think XMAS and
spending money has been suspended for a few months.
Some intellectual giant finally realised on TV this week
that the real reason why people are not borrowing or
spending the economy out of recession is that nobody
has any job security .... doh!

Oh well back to the weekend

I'd say test the memory first, then the video card.
As far as the frozen windows, If you have Vista, I feel sorry for you, but you might try doing a repair reinstall.

      Some things to try.......
      Internet Explorer 7 Troubleshooting (IE7)

I doubt that it is memory or graphics hardware Kim because
it happens on my desktops and laptop which I know the
hardware is good/tested and more than capable of running
Vista ...which I DO NOT lol .... XP4ME

It does only happen when I have more than one tab active.
Perhaps M$ is trying to ANNOY people into using Vista

I had the same problem until I switched over to Firefox browser. Had dozens of tabs open, no more problem!

I don't like FireFox - it nags me to death on everything I have to do for my client, PlugInProfitSite.com. I am all for security but not so much that you can't function - I have to test domains and hosting accounts and it hiccups with some stupid dialog every page (I get about 100 a day to test)

I have XP Media, SP3, I have 3 GB Ram, Pen-D, cable connection - I should not have this problem -

However, I have noticed this same issue to some degree when I play games - some will not load - one finally said the other day I need Java VM to play this cool dragon game.

Java is a big pain in the rear end. I can run presentations in online conference rooms and Skype and I have no problem - it is just videos and games I am having issues.

I figured it was IE7 originally because it started when they got way into beta testing IE8 and so I figured they screwed up somewhere as usual. (I had issues with the change from ie6 to 7. i am just lucky like that.

But the fact that the computer runs fine otherwise, and I have sufficient memory etc., just leads me to believe that it is related either to the speed of my processor and/or the limitations of my graphics adapter - probably both el cheapo and well dell just sucks.

I have usually 5 things open - 2 gmail accounts, a helpdesk application, the member database, the warrior forum. (which has issues sometimes) and at night add 2-3 more with the host server, enrollment database and a peripheral site for that.

It happens only with multiple windows open but by far the worst when i have the forum open to the thread with all the videos. Or i am going back and forth to youtube (better if I open a second browser rather than with tabs all on one)

Control/Alt/Delete does not work - it is in rigamortis. Totally frozen on all windows - I can't even get to the little client that shows what is running to 'end task' - I have to hold down my power off button until it shuts down and then reboot.

Thanks I guess I will have to do the research. I would rather pop a circuit board that is what I was hoping but for processor I would probably need a whole new mother board, right?

Well my son is convincing me this is a problem with wireless and cable.

cable is much faster and broader, but the way i have my wireless router configured the cable is coming thru wireless - it should be straight cable on my desktop and the router is only for the laptop -

it makes sense though - putting the whole camel through an eye of the needle....

i have no idea what to do except try to diagram all my cables and hardware and then try to explain it to someone from the router or cable company.

    Cable->router->pc's

    SB Cable>pc>router>

i don't know anything except my windows are crashing...

      Well Pat,

my desktop is connected to the router by cable.
My laptop is wifi connected to the same router.
I am on proper broadband fibreoptic cable ... not
      ADSL and phoneline.

Connection quality locally and to ISP is excellent
according to modem/router admin logs. The IE7
multitab freezing still occurs. I can understand
a bad connection with lots of dropped packets
and "black holes" causing freezing etc on pages
tabs .... but fail to see why freezing should
cut in when you open second or more tabs????

Maybe it would help to clarify the issues if you
could get the quality of your connection checked
for signal to noise levels and correct power levels
up and downstream. If they are out of whack, then
it would be best to get the ISP guys to fix it anyway.

Still bet its M$ and IE tho'

Follow me here please. This is the issue -

You are connected TO the router BY cable.

I am connected TO cable BY the router. That is the issue. I should be like you.

If you disable my wireless network, I can't get to the internet - If I remove the router completely and just plug the cable modem to the PC, I am back online. (this was the clue to Sean)

I do have a 'proper' cable - not ADSL - The other confusing wierd part however is that I have a bundle. I get my land line phone, my cable TV and my internet connection all from the same modem/Comcast.

The way I have it connected is how either Dell, Comcast or Belkin (router) have told me to do it -

It is just a matter of the order in which it is going that is causing the problem (according to son). It seems logical all except there are only so many ports on the back of all of them and "in" and "out" only work so many ways. (in or out - no sideways lol)

My deskop doesn't need wireless because I have cable. I only need wireless because my laptop needs to have access to the cable.

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

But yeh I hope and still suspect it is IE. They have also been blamed for skyrocketing gas prices and all the rest of the evils in the world. (like it is not bad enough as it is) LOL.

Somewhere there will be an answer. I have plenty of hair to lose.

I have very similar cable TV/phone/broadband package.

If you have a USB lead between cable modem and router
then change it if possible to the same type of lead which
connects your desktop to the router (RJ45/Cat5/ethernet).

(lead means electrical cable in this context).

It sometimes helps if you switch off the whole lot ... and then
switch on the cable modem and let it settle down until the
lights stop flashing. Then turn on your router (whatever) and
give that time to settle also. This gives time for any modem
or router/cablebox to get latest firmware updates automatically
frome the cableCO .... and may help or give some other benefits.
Then turn on desktop(s) and laptop(s) and let them connect.
Hey its free .... and helps sometimes

Thank you so much Mike - I wouldn't have asked but I can always tell by the thoroughness of your answers that you do enjoy this tech talk as I do, especially when I understand it.

I will take everything and log where it is connnected to from where.

Then I will take it all apart and try to do as you suggest.

It probably won't be today because Monday is it's own special hell.

I will let you know when I do that and/or hopefully resolve this issue - if nothing else so we can rule that out and still flame IE7!

    Gotta have some fun...

FYI in case anybody is trying to learn from this thread:

here is what the cable company says

    ==========
edit COMCAST has at least one really skilled tecnician and we talked the whole thing thru.

We confirmed its not about wireless, but that the video music thread is the problem

With that thread open, nothing playing on the video, my CPU usage at 2.79 GHz is 32% which is bad. (plus 6-9 windows open)

With just the forum on it is around 8% CPU usage with brief spikes. see?

I think I will just need to find some processes to kill to free up some juice from somewhere. and i may still disconnect my wireless router from my pc. Just plug it in when I need to use the laptop.

bummer solution there and there goes my intranet.

i am going to keep experimenting and try to find a better resolution but for now, the problem is only with one thread in the forum -

Thanks Mike and Kim for talking me through it all -

A friend in need is a friend indeed!

Still not convinced it is hardware Pat. CPU usage at 32% is
just "busy" .... leaves you another 68% to go. Try converting
movies and burning to DVD ....CPU usage will be banging on
the roof even with a 3Gig CPU.

Have you tried altering the settings in your UserCP to display
        fewer posts/videos per page???
It maybe that the videos/images are being pre-fetched to
speedup browsing .... and causing the opposite effect with
TOO MANY of them. (you can turn off pre-fetching in IE
or XP somewhere, but have forgotten).

Another thought is to try to find another Vbulletin site
with loads of similar vids ... and whether that gives same probs.

Vbulletin has some hefty page sizes without vids on TWF!

Yeh Mike I will check that out with the page size -

I was experimenting last night and CPU goes all the way to 90% with a video playing in the thread. The 32% was just having the thread open! Nothing even playing -

So that would really support your theory about displaying too many posts. Good luck me on finding the setting.

When you look at the size of the process files - they are all under xx,xxx - Explorer however is xxx,xxx

I also need to figure out how to identify the running processes. I see how to disable them, but with my luck I will disable Windows or something.

They definitely could have been more discriptive them svpxxx.exe etc.

Well, I always learn alot when I have a problem. So that is a good thing.

    Thanks again.
