What operating system goes on them - can u put normal windows xp on them or does it have to be a special version of windows?

    Rob,

Most of them come with XP or Win 7. You can add other OS's pretty easily.

I picked up one of the 14-hour battery ASUS machines with a 160 meg HD and I love it. Added another gig of ram and set it up to dual-boot. Choice of Linux or the Win 7 that came with it. The whole process took about 20 minutes.

    Great little machine.

I have an Acer Aspire One that I love. It came preloaded with Win 7 Starter. It takes a little getting used to (no personalization), but I do all my projects on it and it has a huge hard drive.

i love acer one happy too!

i want to buy one soon but my HP is still working fine

about the operating system, most notebooks already come with pre-installed OS

so you don't need to worry about that

the manufacturers have already chosen the most appropriate os for the notebook's specs

Manufacturers are concerned about sales, not necessarily the 'most appropriate' operating system.

I run XP, works, no complaints.
