Are there any hunters out there?
Monday starts the Deer Gun season in Ohio. I know there are people out there that don't agree with the management of animals but I feel it is essential in controlling the population. When you figure one alternative is hitting them with your car. I usually take one deer a season because that is all my family can eat in a season. Unfortunitely I will not be going on opening day due to breaking my back 8 months ago. I have recovered for the most part but still have a ways to go. I have no paralysis, just need to re-build muscles. I fractured my lower back and my neck and ended up with a DVT in my left leg. The DVT hurt more than the breaks did. Anyway I may try some hunting a little later because the therapist said I wouldn't be able to. I wish people wouldn't tell me I can't because then I have to prove I can. Good luck to the hunters out there.

Yep Gary, I'll be out there at daybreak tomorrow morning. I fill my freezer and my daughters every year. A lot of people are against hunting them but I hunt for the meat and it saves us a lot of money. Besides, it is a lot better for you than beef or pork.

I live in Coshocton county which is one of the top five counties for deer population. So there is no problem finding deer.

Sorry to hear about your back. That's a bummer! Maybe some of your hunting buddies can fix you up with some fresh venison.

Where do you live in Ohio?

Your not to far from me, Gary. I live near Warsaw in Coshocton county.

Haven't filled my tags of yet. I have only been out one day. Been to busy.
Might have time this weekend. If we get some snow it will help.
My brother owns 135 acres that I hunt on and he lives about 5 miles from me.

I can't kill - once something looks at me, it's a freakin' pet. If I were on my own devices I'd end up vegetarian in a crisis. But I can eat meat. I lived in Lottery territory in Colorado and when there was a weather emergency or a lost hunter, the sheriff would send people to my door. I'd let em camp in the living room during surprise storms and Blitz and I would go find lost hunters. In exchange I always had a freezer full of fresh meat for me -and for Blitz. He got kidneys, stomachs, hearts, livers, and sometimes muscle meat.

Now I just always have to pray the hunters are sane. I got shot at on two different occasions in Wyoming and I was on bald faced slopes so it was no mistake. It's unnerving to have a bullet zip a foot or two in front of you and there is no cover around. All I could do is turn around and scream for the idiot to "Watch your target, dumb f***" and hope I could get out of range fast enough. At that point feigning bravery is about the only defense. That's the only thing some of those mountain hermits understand.

Anyway - wow, got off on a tangent there, eh?

Real thin cut venison cooked like a schnitzel is absolutely scrumptious.

I don't know what lottery territory means. But those wyoming mountain hermits sure sound interesting and insane lol. Enough isolation makes anyone insane. Sounds like a good cultural anthropology study. Someone should live with them a month and document their life style. Maybe you looked like some kind of unfamiliar creature and thought they'd get some good stew out of you.

And I still say shame on you all for killing those cute lil deer. You still should feed them and not kill them. Set out a bowl of deer food every night. And that meal sounds good without the venison. Just add a salad and it's complete.

      We do feed them, AG.

We plant food plots for them and we set out mineral blocks for them.
Plus, they get into the sweet corn we plant.

Then when season comes around we harvest them just like any other crop. If we didn't do that, there would be so many of them you wouldn't be able to drive down the road without hitting one. Which by the way, happens quite often around here because of the deer population.

We are not a heartless bunch, we are self reliant. We live off the land just like our fathers and grandfathers did.

Just this spring I rescued a doe fawn that had lost its mother due to getting hit by an auto. I picked it up and put it in the pickup with me and took it too someone I knew that raised deer. It is half grown now and it still knows me when I stop by my friends place.

A group of guys I hunt with get together during one of the season here in Iowa, and every deer we harvest is sent to a locker for processing, then the processed meat is distributed to various food pantries across Iowa. No shame here in helping the needy and less fortunate.

And I'll take a nice juicy venison steak over a salad any day.

Took a nice 10 point, probably score around 160, early this morning with my bow.

Tomorrow startes first season for shotgun in Iowa. Will be out bright and early looking for a 12 pointer I saw before the 10 point, but was out of range.

Remember everything has a purpose whether it be animal, insect or human, Although we sometimes don't really know what that purpose may be. Unfortunately all of them need to be controlled in one way shape or form. I hit a deer and did $2300 damage to my car therefore I believe we need to control the population or they will over-run their own environment.

I see. You are not pro-life - you are for selective fawna-ocide.

All those yucky things are life, too - and obviously they serve a purpose in the ecosystem or they wouldn't be here.

AG, everything has it's place in this world and venison has it's place.

Right beside the vegetables, the bisquits and gravy, and the salad.

And to think I was thinking of giving you some steaks for Christmas.

Oh well, guess I'll have to grill them for myself.

I'm a good shot - but can't kill an animal.

It took me a long time to get past the bambi argument. But truth is, if deer populations aren't reduced they can be in danger of starvation from overpopulation.

I have no problem with what I call "real hunters" who harvest deer and use the meat. I still dislike trophy hunters who wound or kill for no reason except to show they can shoot something. For that type, I propose arming the deer and declaring open season on people once in a while!

One of the best meals I've ever had was smoked venison roasts stuffed with bacon and garlic. The friend who brought them for a party I was having eats only game, mostly venison, and stocks his two freezers each hunting season. That man knows how to cook venison!

I'm like Sal and Kay - I couldn't kill an animal. Got no problem with those who hunt for the meat though, it's only the trophy hunters I can't abide. Especially those gits who shoot from hellicopters. No honour in that! :-(

We used to eat each other once upon a time, and I suppose an argument could be made again that it'd be a good way to cull the population. Can't see many taking that route though.

We used to eat rabbit a lot over here, but for some strange reason it seems to have gone out of fashion and people react with horror at the idea of eating bunny rabbits. I was raised on rabbit stew. It were 'orrid - sweet tasting if I remember rightly.

Never had venison, though I've seen it in some stores. Interesting that it's low cholesterol. What's it taste like?

I am totally against hunting. I'm a vegetarian and an animal activist.

BUT... I respect that Gary the original poster here is not glorifying the killing of animals, and actually makes use of it. What I deplore is trophy hunting.

I'm like Gary. I only do it for the meat.

Every year I fill my freezer and my daughters' freezer with venison. That in it's self saves us a lot of cash and it is better for your health.

When I first started hunting I shot a big buck and found out their not fit to eat when the season is in. The reason for that is because when hunting season, they are in rut and the meat is strong. So I hunt the does and yearlings.

I do not like the so called "trophy hunters" that just hunt for "racks" and discard the meat. And I am totaly against those "pen" hunts!!
I believe in fair chase. Venison is what I like to call "The Original Fast Food."

My son got a doe a week and a half ago. It weighed an even 100 pounds.

So far this year we have not seen a single buck, not even a spike. This coming weekend my son and I need to get serious about hunting and get at least one good buck. One deer will give us enough hamburger and sausage to last about 6 months. 2 deer usually last us all year.
