What was the closest you ever came to dying?

And how did it mentally affect you?

Had an auto accident in 1992(?). Hit a long, deep puddle and hit a tree head on, no seatbelt. Screwed up my right knee on the ashtray support rods and smashed the windshield three times with the same spot on my head. I guess I bounced off the seat a few times...

The first cop on the scene was sure he would need a hearse. He popped his head in the window and saw me snacking on the pizza I was trying to deliver. He asked me if I was OK, and (from what the cop said) I smiled and offered him some pizza.

Neither he, the EMT's nor the fire department guys who had to pull me out on a backboard accepted my offer of a light snack.

PS - Jerk Boss made me PAY FOR THE PIZZA....

OH, and then there was the time I was still driving tractor-trailers...

I paid my toll in New Rochelle NY, and WOKE UP, still driving, where you get your ticket for the Mass Pike off of 84.

Drove through the whole state of Connecticut (in a big-rig) and I don't remember it.

Also nearly rolled one once. Ever see a 53 foot trailer on only 4 wheels?

    I could go on, but I won't.

Mentally affect me? Damn right it did, they all do. You can't walk away from something like that without reassessing some VERY personal things.

According to the doctors they "lost" me for several minutes many years ago. I remember wondering why everyone was so excited when I was so calm - but then there are blanks where I don't remember. No flashing life or white light - darn it.

I've been crazy ever since - but, then, I was crazy before that, too.

My doctor was a real joker - said I wouldn't be afraid of dying when I got old because I took a test run. I think he was more shook up than I was at the time. I didn't know until later how bad it was.

Bus accident is number one. Three people died while over 20 others including me were injured after the bus was hit by a lorry. It happened in 2005.

In my childhood; I almost drowned once.

Both were scary. The drowning forced me to believe in god while the bus accident made me realize; no matter how tight we hold with the seat belts on; it does not help :-(

I got ran half way off the road by a big rig. Had a CB radio in the vehicle and let him have a little piece of my mind though. It was scary going down the highway at 60+ mph and having an 18 wheeler gradually move over into your lane and the only thing you could do was move over towards the median. But, at the last minute he realized he was running us off the road..Dang blind spots on those things.

5 years ago in January 2006, I suffered a stroke, and a month later February 2006, a massive pulmonary embolism in which my heart stopped beating for 9 minutes. I did suffer cognitive brain damage and I was left paralyzed my left side body for life.

My Doc insisted I was not supposed to have lived through it.

      Sorry to hear that Bernard,

I know we may not have seen totally eye to eye since you arrived but I must say I never knew that and I'm impressed you're here today.

As I am with many of you above.

Not sure how close I've come to dying in the physical sense (Like Bernard and Kay) but I do know there have been a few moments in my younger life where I was very lucky.

I had a serious head injury when I was very young that left me profoundly deaf and I was seriously mauled by a gang of homeless men several years ago. I also know had I not taken some evasive action in my teenage years I would have come pretty close to being brown bread then as well.

Mind you, I never joined the Army due to my deafness, a lot of those brave people face that prospect everyday, as do a lot of other very brave people in our society.

Close call skydiving three months ago.

First shoot failed to open. Emergency shoot got tangled. Ground racing up. Or me racing down, full brakes on, spreadeagled.

Thinking... ****! This is it, I'm about to make one hell of a mess on that golf course.

Untangled with seconds to spare. Hard landing. Not much damage except to my ego. And a very sore leg muscle.

Makes you appreciate life. Went up again the next day.

When my wife asked me, "Does this make me look fat?" My odds were an even 50-50 chance.

Gave the right answer, but I've been wracked with a sense of guilt for lying for many years now.

            Accidents happen.

All you can do is to minimize the risk. As much as possible.

I drank an entire fifth of 151 Bacardi Rum once when I was 22 and woke up three days later in a bed full of vomit, blood (severe road rash -- to this day I have no idea how I got it either), urine and ****. I literally had a hangover for 4 days from it.

Does that count as almost dying?

I believe they call that dying and coming back to life.

      3 days is impressive though.

I've never heard of anyone being dead that long.

Well I did once but that was in the Bible!?

At the time I was still living with my parents and they were gone on vacation. I literally was dead to the world for 3 days. My mother was the one to find me. One of my proudest moments for sure. But it did end up in me quitting drinking very early in life. So I count it as a very good thing to have happened to me.

When I was 9, I nearly drowned. I remember loosing consciousness for a minute. I recall the rush and exhilaration of feeling the air surrounding me when I "woke up." I dreamed about being underwater and the feeling of not-being-able-to-breathe for a long time. I had a fear of water for years, and forced myself to overcome that as an adult.
Now, I value life more that ever, like every day may be my last. I savor life, but I'm not afraid of dying anymore! That's a comforting feeling. I have angels!
    Thanks for asking.

Being subjected to Lady Gaga's "Alejandro." It caused me to suffer acute sound poisoning resulting in cerebral meltdown and brain paralysis.

Being shot and having a bullet lodged in my neck was a mere splinter compared to Lady Gaga's ramrodding of toxic sound waves against the walls of my skull and traumatic pummeling of the grey matter within.
