I Love facebook, but this seem downright stupid of them...

EVERYONE'S PHONE NUMBER IS NOW ON FACE BOOK!! NO JOKE. Go to the top right of your screen, click Account then Edit Friends. Go to the left side of your screen and click Phone book. Everyone's cell phone numbers are now being published. I did NOT give them permission (that I know of) to show that!

Mine doesn't show up, but maybe that's because I never put my cell phone number in my profile.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Likewise. Even so, now that I've looked at the phone book... yep, tons of phone numbers are shown because not everyone is cautious enough not to give their numbers to FB. Wow. I'd guess this has something to do with the upcoming facebook phones (UGH) but this is such a dick move.

Google scrapes the numbers w/ spidering. It can't get what's not out there. Facebook however, asks you for your number for security purposes, and then publishes it w/out your permission. And following the links on that page, it sounds like, if you have a facebook ap on your cellphone, they even take contacts from your cell phone and publish them.

Not true... They only show the phone number if you've added it to your profile (explicitly through Edit Profile). And you can hide it from some (or all) of your friends if you want by creating lists. How do I know? I have some friends who, I know, use Facebook Mobile, but don't figure in my 'Phonebook' on FB.

I believe you can turn that "feature" off in your profile. But Facebook makes almost everything automatic unless you dig into the controls and turn it off.

From what I know they ask for the phone number to send you a SMS with a code in the case you loose your password ! But there is always the alternative to send you the activation code on your email, you don't have to necessary provide them your phone number!

There are privacy measures on facebook you can take to fix all that. On the top right-hand side under Account, click on Privacy Settings. There you will be able to check off what you don't want to be viewed and what you do want viewable. You can also edit friends to where some cannot see your number.

Also, if you don't want your phone number on there, just don't put it on there.

      You know why?

Because they are exposing your information by default, knowing full well that most people either aren't going to know where to look, or will forget to do it.
The same way they were giving developers the API and your information.

Do you think that those lengthy "fine print" terms, that nobody seems to read, in credit cards, and a few other things are done by accident?

It is calculated and deliberate move.

Credit cards? LMAO. It would be a cold day in hell before FB ever got a credit card number from me.

This is also why I use Better Privacy pluggin on my FF browser. I don't want those freaking vandals watching every site I click on. I don't feel it's their business no matter what they want to think of as their purpose. Until the lawsuits against LSO cookies is over, I just wipe them clean after each visit.

I also think that the first time someone gets hurt or killed or even just threatened because someone was able to pull an unpublished number off of FB that they might think twice about it.

An alternative, though -- for any marketing savvy Warriors would be to build a site that functions just like google, with enough differences not to infringe on patents, copyrights, etc - and gets a major amount of people to help launch the site------with BIG advertisements that people's privacy won't be invaded, FB might just start to regret seeing people's lives and personal details as nothing but one more money making source.
