Thinking of comcast as a provider? You may want to think AGAIN!

I had a problem setting up VPN on my new computer. OK, there were new settings, etc... MAYBE I was wrong, but EVERYTHING says I was RIGHT!

Another claimed the IP was pingable, etc... so I decided to try it on ANOTHER system, that used to work. It FAILED! So I tried it with verizon, and it WORKED! So COMCAST was the problem.

The IDIOT they have there doesn't even know about ports or the most basic of networking. He is an idiot because SUPPOSEDLY he is technical support for their networking and is just so IGNORANT.

He EVEN tried to tell me that maybe I should pay MORE for a business account. I started telling him how this hurts his company in relation with verizon, and I wouldn't get them for business if they make decisions so capriciously.

YEAH, I googled this, and found that comcast has slowly been disabling PPTP access on their network! SOME got hit like 7 years ago, and I only recently got hit.

I think we revisit a Comcrap thread every six months or so.
Thank the government for allowing monopolys.
    Worst service ever.
    They lie to you.
For two months in a row I have told their "customer service" to have a supervisor call me. No call back as of yet.
On tyheir billing material they say they have 24 hour support lines, yet if you call them, after a half an hour with their useless automated directory system you get a message saying they are closed and call back during business hours. And none of their tech support or customer service is USA based.
As I said, they are called Comcrap by everyone I know.

Yeah, several of the google links indicated things like lies! One of my older ISPs stopped relaying mail, and it took them six MONTHS to tell me the truth!!!!! That IDIOT even asked me for the IP address! WHY!?!?!? It DOES work, on OTHER networks. It IS low volume! It IS private. Only about 6 people on the planet are using it now. Got that!?!?!?!? PRIVATE!!!!!! The FIRST line of defense is ALWAYS hiding its existence. It is unconscionable that I should EVEN be asked to reveal it. I suppose NEXT they will ask for the password!

I even tried to make it clear to him what I was talking about. I mean he sounded like I was making it up. I told him that while an IP address is like the address to a home, the port is like the directions to the door. After all, mysql can't FTP, FTP can't telnet, and none of those can do PPTP. The port tells the computer which protocol to use.

I'm behind a public library's restrictive firewall at the moment, but I can still access my home computer from the outside on ports 80 & 443. I'm not sure why you couldn't access a VPN.

Also, don't expect Comcast's tech support to be able to understand any kind of technical problem.

I wish people were always good at what they are paid to do. This doesn't seem to be the case with Comcast's tech support, in my experience.

Oh, I'm not arguing with your experience, I think I said the same thing, but it doesn't stop me from expecting them to know what they are doing.

        80 is DEDICATED to HTTP
        443 is DEDICATED to HTTPS

I'm using PPTP which uses 1723 and apparently 47.

PPTP allows you to use secret and unroutable IP addresses, so it is a step above 443, and it is ILLEGAL in many cases to use port 80 for it, since port 80 is cleartext and thus a JOKE. Seriously, there are laws against using it for credit information, even tougher ones for other financial, and tougher ones for health info. Besides, the go to my PC stuff is just that, go to my [windows] pc. Tied to one gui, etc... So it isn't practical for servers.

And remember what I said about doors! VPN is behind door 1723. If you go through door 443. only HTTPS will be there to greet you.

I think you've got port 47 confused with IP protocol 47.

Not if there's not an HTTPS server listening on port 443. I have an SSH server, and not an HTTPS server, listening on 443 at my house.

I don't know if Comcast blocks access to port 1723, but you might consider using OpenVPN for your VPN. It will listen on any port you want it to.

You may technically be right. It DOES use GRE, but I saw port 47. Several protocols DO use multiple ports.

I can't use openVPN, as it is NOT compatible with the router, which I have NO control over. AND, though IT can use quickvpn, many computers today CAN'T. It IS an odd situation. I have control over the Linux and ALL software on the computer, but NOT over the VM instances or VPN.
