Hello warriors,

I use an email client to handle my accounts, and a notification pops up everytime i get a new Email . My heart skipped a beat, body went cold and i am sure I lost my sanity for a few seconds when this popped in my face Paypal account FROZEN BRANCO Why in blazes name would someone want to send something like this, and this is from a guy who has been in the game for years.

Is he just mean or is he so blinded by greed he cannot see that this might cause discomfort to some people. Of course i immediately unsubscribed and to think i was about to promote one of his products to one of my lists HISS....

Please people I know we all like money but seems to me like for some folks the elevator just don't reach the top floor no more, The wheel is turning but the hamster is dead . If you were ever thinking of sending something like this please stop as you will only burn holes in your pocket.

End of transmission

I think subjects like that get attention but are really annoying. They may work but why make up things? Some things in IM are REALLY annoying. I have unsubscribed to many lists just because I don't like getting 2-4 emails per day trying to get me to click and buy.

Threatening my family would ALSO get my attention... but not my business. Sorry, in my own marketing there's a line that I may dance right up to, but I simply won't cross it.

How is a user hitting the spam button almost phishing? lol. I do it when I get on a mailing list with a broken unsubscribe link.Or I do it if they annoy me enough. I figure if they cant provide quality subject lines and quality emails, how can they provide quality with anything else?

While I don't condone the use of that particular subject, marketing is about pushing emotional buttons - blandness just doesn't work.

The trick is to find strong emotional triggers that won't offend or annoy anyone which is subjective and difficult.

    Cheers,

I agree, Neil. Finding the right emotional buttons and affecting them in a way that makes them react, but positively, that is the goal we should be striving for. Some people seem to just go for the first button that comes to mind!

They do it because it works.

They do it because they know that their name is powerful enough to snuff out any concern that some people may have about the deceptive subject line.

After all, if there is even a SLIGHT chance that the recipient/friend/partner/jv guy/whatever can make a profit from this 'guy', its basically supported.

This was proven about a year ago on this very forum by the guy who sent the 'john doe is in the hospital!' email. He got a few token 'shame on him' comments, but in the end he was basically praised for being such a good guy who maybe made a bad judgment call 'just this one time'.

If people would call them out for what they really are, it would stop pretty quick. But thats not going to happen, because there are usually too many other hands in the pocket.

The issue is that the line is different for everyone. While the PayPal subject seems to offend some people here, I for one couldn't give one jot about it.

    See what I mean?

I hate the email subject that says "Congratulations! You've made a sale." but you actually don't! The email body then says something like "that's the email you will receive ..... "

    Hey Kim, how are you

I'd bet that less unsubbed than stayed subscribed.

I'd say that could be quite effective if you sent it to people who had yet to make any sales.

Most annoying one I've gotten is "Battle.net Account - Account Change Notice"

The spammer that sends it out copied the email from blizzard word-for-word, I almost fell for it and clicked the link before checking the URL in the hyperlink.

It's the most authentic-looking spam I've seen...and it gets through spam filters.

The thing that really erks me is that the email account in question is tied to my battle.net account, so I get emails like this from Blizzard and such on a regular basis, and the way they've constructed it is making it almost impossible to identify as a spammer without actually clicking the link. Smart spammer...

    This is the email:

This is one of these areas where there can never be agreement simply because it's all about personal boundaries.

Someone on here has a signature file that I find highly offensive but no-one else seems bothered about it. All I can do is avoid his posts and I'm happy to accept that as the only remedy available to me.

    Cheers,

    Ouch!

Personally I used to hate it when the gurus went through a phase of saying things like:

    'Your account is ready'
    'RE: Your affiliate comission'
    'We are ready to pay'
    etc...

Would be genius if they were trying to pitch a heart attack product though right? They are way off ball with that subject.
