Great lesson in that about giving customers what they want, the way they want it. It appears Disney completely missed the boat with the Chinese market.

Easier said than done. Allan Zeman is deeply immersed in the culture there (even dropping his Canadian citizenship in favor of Chinese citizenship) and already had experience introducing western style restaurants and entertainment to Hong Kong. I'll bet Disney's highly paid consultants basically didn't have a clue (like "consultants" I met when I was in China).

The story is more complicated than that. The Hong Kong government actually owns 57% of Hong Kong Disneyland and it owns 100% of Hong Kong Ocean Park. It does not need either to be profitable as the main motive is draw tourists to Hong Kong.

It begged Disney to come to Hong Kong a decade ago, and enticed it with lots of incentives. Disney took those incentives and now finds that it has fallen into a trap.

The Hong Kong Disneyland is so small that you can visit all the attractions within a single day. What is really bad is that they used two dimensional cardboad figures for some of these rides. This is not what you would expect from Disney, but from a run down mobile amusement park. Also, it only has two very expensive 5 star hotels there. Most Chinese tourists to Disney are still not that rich.
