Although it's intended for areas of third-world countries with no public water supplies, it looks like a great product to keep on-hand for emergencies:

Watercone® News

I believe mass manufacturing begins in Germany before next Summer and the price will be about €20.

    Tommy,

Yes, desalination is definitely the "in" thing, but what do we do with the brine? You see, when it goes back into the ocean, it's weight is three times heavier due to the concentrated salt and other minerals, so it just stays in a lump. the colder ocean water also causes it to compress, so it doesn't just "go out to sea", and because it's so concentrated it kills ocean life. The most vulnerable is: plankton, sea plants, small one celled animals, krill...this stuff just whipes them out. The problem is without this sea life, larger fish starve which goes up the food chain. Also, bull head and salmon can't find their way back to fresh water to spawn, so they die in the ocean. This is causing these species of fish to become threatened with extinction.

There are better ways to answer global water lack. Air to Water Technology. Yes, we can go lo-tech too. The Maya did, so did the Egyptians...so can we.

Quite true on a large scale but, that said, if the shit hits the fan, I doubt many individual humans would be willing to go without drinking water for the sake of ocean dwellers. On an industrial level, I believe Dubai (one of the biggest desalination users in the World) is close to, or maybe has already begun to, recycle desalination waste products to obtain even more water and extract useable minerals instead of discharging it back into the sea.

You're right. They will not think about that the ocean is the basis of our ecosystem, and if the bottom of the food chain collapses, the whole thing comes tumbling down...including those land-lubbers who are pouring brine into the ocean. It's a cycle that can be worked with not against. People also don't realize that the Earth IS a living organism and we are only GUESTS of her graciousness....when she gets fed up with us ungrateful free-loaders, she will retaliate.

Yep, I was referring to dew wells, air wells, and other technology!

How about an ocean well: ATMOSPHERIC WATER GENERATOR MORE PURE WATER THAN DEW

Dr. James Vagarasoto is doing some amazing things. he is working on an ocean platform that will extract pure drinking water from the ocean without the brine.

That's just an old survival trick.

Using char from burned wood as a filter is a faster way to purify water, along with boiling. Or sponging up dew in the morning... we could go on forever.

Knowledge is the key to surviving an emergency, as you probably already know my friends

Have a look at this one....bit pricey at first sight, though for what it can do I guess it's cheap. It provides water from the air. Worth saving up for, I reckon.
