There are some major revolutions taking place around the world that directly impact our economy. Pffftt, forget about that. Charlie Sheen is on TV.

Good to see the mainstream meeja has its priorities right.

Can't wait to see the next big headline:

"Charlie Sheen Starts Dating Lindsay Lohan."

Now that's the sort of thing that, when asked in twenty years time, we'll all remember what we were doing at the time we first heard the news.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

I seen him first time in two and half men and no doubt he is awesome comedian. I like him in that comedy show. And I don't think he'll date Lindsay Lohan.

The media is just giving the people want they want to see. It's not their fault, most humans are stupid.

If people showed more interest in economics and world events instead of wasting their time watching CSI, listening to crap rnb/rap music, on facebook 24/7 trying to showoff to their friends, and buying ipads which they don't need, then things may be a little different.

      .
That couldn't be farther from the truth. If you want to understand why the media feeds us a steady diet of lies, half truths, and silly distractions, read the classic book on the subject, "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman. There are quite a few reasons for the lack of real reporting in corporate news sources, not the least of which is the self serving agendas of the corporations that own the major media outlets.

In fact Noam Chomsky's popularity is an instructive phenomenon in itself, busting the myth of the idiocy of the common folks. Mainstream media outlets hate him (seeing as how he's their harshest, most incisive critic, as well as a harsh critic of the agendas set by the corporations that own them), yet his books are best sellers, and his speaking schedule is booked 2 years in advance, for sold out rooms. People are hungry for real substantive analysis of the real issues ignored or misrepresented in the "mainstream".

The nationwide popularity of non-commercial, challenging shows like Amy Goodman's daily, syndicated, "Democracy Now"- is further evidence of the powerful hunger of ordinary people for real information about the world around them.

Pop culture is shoved so far down our throats so relentlessly that it's no wonder you might have the impression we're a bunch of idiots, but that's because it serves someone else's agenda to distract us from things that matter.

And then there's the fact that politics is so bathed in dollars, and has so excluded average people that a lot of people are so cynical about the prospects for meaningful participation in our democracy, that they give in to the distractions out of hopelessness.

Many people are overworked, overstressed, and find events so depressing that they've stopped paying attention, and are seeking numbness-not because they're dumb, and just can't get enough of the exploits of spoiled jerks like Charlie Sheen.

    Just a thought...

Maybe the reason the Charlie Sheen story is getting so much traction is BECAUSE the news is filled with so much bad stuff. It serves as a temporary distraction.

Believe it or not, people ARE aware of the revolutions and unrest going on around the world. You can't honestly say the media doesn't report. If they didn't then you wouldn't even be able to make this post because you wouldn't know about it. If you follow.

That being said, if all you're seeing is Charlie Sheen coverage, then maybe it's time to seek out different news sources. At least ones that don't cover him as much.

    Just a thought.

    All the best,
    Michael

You seem to have more faith in the status quo than I do. I believe the mainstream media is not employed to inform, but to sidetrack the masses, using the bread and circuses strategy. I see important news not being reported, but being obfuscated by the mainstream media.

I guess it makes little or no difference to me whether Charlie Sheen is crazy or not. Michael Oksa and Roaddog are far more important to me than Charlie Sheen.

Yeah - many people still don't understand the full implications of corporate owned news. There are a lot of people that don't know that mainstream media is no longer a free press or why that matters. I have almost gagged on some of the crap I see that they call news. No facts, corporate spin on anything promoted - and yes, corporate owned news centers do not report facts, they promote spin in case people have otherwise found out about things that aren't good for them to have us know.

Example: You hear controversy about Fox news all the time. Why is their "news" so different from other news channels? They are owned by a Japanese corporation who has a different agenda than American corporations which own our news centers.

The most devastating factor of corporate news is that their main goal is entertainment rather than factual reporting of issues that we should be paying attention to. Providing entertainment rather than news solves a LOT of problems for them and gets them the ratings they need to keep pumping out fertilizer.

It's to keep us distacted with this bs journalism so that we are numb enough from the stupidity and then we don't ask the hard questions. How very arrogant to assume that everyone's stupid and gullible, eh? Mainstream media is owed by government and corporations...enough said!

          Say what?!?!?

          Serious fail. More homework required.

News Corp began its life in Adelaide, Australia. They moved their headquarters to Delaware a couple of years ago to take advantage of somewhat lax corporate regulation.

The major shareholder is Rupert Murdoch who renounced his Australian citizenship in order to buy US media assets.

The second biggest shareholder is a gentlemen from the Middle East who has some "colourful" associations.

Huh. Which one am I thinking of? Well, either way - my point is clear here even if I got the wrong ownership with the wrong channel. I'm sure the guy from the Middle East has Americans full welfare in mind. We already know what Murdoch is - everything but prosecuted.

I think the reason a lot of people are fascinated with this story (or at least the reason I'm fascinated with it) is because of the sharp contrast between his TV presence, and his reality presence.

Yes he is a "bad boy" on TV and in real life, but his TV and movie characters are usually fairly witty and smart. However, we're being exposed to the "real" Charlie, and he's turning out to actually be a numpty. Unlike his TV character, the "real" Charlie doesn't seem like he has it together fully upstairs.

What we're watching seems to be like a prolonged dance on Oprah's couch. It's the self destruction of years and years worth of image building work. The guy we thought of as the fun witty uncle, turns out to be the crazy uncle. You know, that one crazy uncle we all have that exposes himself at the family reunions to pick up chicks? While he's still fun to watch, he's no longer the uncle you want to become.

It is hideous indeed. I'm sure we won't know the true death toll for years, as radiation related deaths can take time to happen. I bet it will be in the 10s of thousands; I believe I saw an official estimate that it would end up to be at least 10,000.

Typically in disasters where we have to rely on the corporations and officials whose duty it was to protect public safety, and who certainly at one point sold the public on the idea that an accident of catastrophic proportions could never happen due to the wonderful safeguards built into the plants, can be relied on to down play the severity of their failure by at least a factor of 10.

Now would be a good time to recall that nuclear proponents in the US were bitterly arguing that the technology was artificially expensive due to an overabundance of safety regulations companies had to abide by, when actually, nuke plants wouldn't exist without public subsidies. given against the will of the majority of the public that have always held the technology to be too dangerous.

I might sound a bit harsh blaming the disaster on corporate and government officials, when it was after all an unpredictable, and unprecedented quake.

The reason I do is that predictably unpredictable natural disasters are one of the well know arguments against nuclear power, and now we are seeing the horrible human costs that nuclear proponents have always assured us would never happen, as they downplayed warnings that such accidents could happen, and are an unacceptable risk. The proponents won the battle, and now Japanese are paying with their lives.

My neck of the woods is just as vulnerable, and we're overdue for a major quake. Where does one hide when the world's been turned into a giant testing laboratory for dangerous technologies?
