Some of the YouTube videos from people during the event were quite frightening.

It's absolutely shocking at the least. Yet all in all, the death toll is amazingly small for the amount of destruction incurred. Let's just hope it stays that way.

The relatively low death toll is just from the quake and tsunami. We have no idea what the effects, especially long term, are going to be from the nuclear mess.

Let's hope that that too remains relativley small.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

    HOLY S**T

It's as if these places didn't exsist

A few hours of carnage caused all this and it's beggars belief. I pray for all those who couldn't escape in time and my heart goes out to all those who were very unfortunate to lose their lives.

Let's hope that we can all help them in whatever way possible.

Insensitivity towards this subject is pretty damn shocking. Think of all of the lives lost, people injured, possessions lost and the future these people face.

Sad part is, this is just the beginning for Japan.. the resulting economic devastation will be just as horrifying, if not more so. A lot of manufacturing goes on in Japan and many will be reluctant, rightly or wrongly, to purchase those "radioactive" toys or other goods this coming Christmas (and before).

Can the Japanese economy sustain a rebuild of the lost infrastructure?

Those are amazing pictures and the way it's done really drives the point home. I'm not sure how they got such perfectly matching pictures, as far as elevation, angle, etc, but they did a great job on it.
