I am one that uses the anti-age creams and stuff to try to make myself look as young as I can. Anyone else taking preventive measures to look their best?

    Do You Look Your Age?
I guess others can tell me that better than I can. I am 54 - my avatar pic was taken the month of my 53rd birthday.

I have studied aging for 30 years - started when I noticed that both my father's mother and my own mother both had incredible skin and yet no common bloodlines - and some of their friends looked like shar-peis having
a bad hair day. I have an ebook on how to avoid damage - and reverse
it if you are already having problems. I just had to take it down to do some work on the site but it will be up again soon enough.

Anyhow back to the question - that's what I look like and that's my age. You can all decide for yourself. I betting everyone who looks at someone else has a different perspective of their age.
But there's not much hiding trashed.

Sal, send me a copy of your e-book, or how much is it?

My adoptive mother was very much into "night creams" and "antiwrinkle" creams. When she died at 77....she could have passed for 45. I didn't do as good a job at the antiaging skin care and at 47, I look ten years older easily. I'm starting to pay more attention to it and try to peel back a few of those wrinkles and tuck in that double chin. I figure, it's better to start now. As long as I'm alive, it 's not too late.

Can I ask - Why do women want to look younger?

I am 40. I look 40. I have no desire to look like a 20 year old.

Why are women so obsessed with looking younger?

People are shocked if I let my age slip out accidentally. (sometimes I do it on purpose so I can hear them say 'oh no, you don't look it at all' - lol. cheap thrills).

I am blessed by genetics on both sides and I take very good care of my skin. I have taken vitamins for years - the skin stuff is A,C, D & E to name the main ingredients but I also believe Niacin because it helps circulation)

The main thing is never to get sunburned - the worst looking older skin is due to this. I was 'blessed' that I burnt my face when I was a teenager with a sunlamp and looked like a tomato for a week or so. 1,2,3rd degree burns.

My doctor literally cried when he saw me. He warned me never to get another sunburn as long as I live and I never have.

Blessed because otherwise I would have and because although I can feel where the blisters broke, you can't see the scars even now.

Exfoliation is the main thing or lack thereof that shows the wrinkly looking, dry, dull skin in older people.

I am very diligent to hydrate and moisturize my face every day and exfoliate regularly (monthly).

I have also just bought this cool thing called a DermaWand. It is one of the few things I ever bought off TV that wasn't a scam.

It has infrared light & heat, plus little electric currents. After moisturizing you just rub it over your face for a few minutes - It is literally amazing how it gets the moisturizer way down deep and is really puffing up areas that are caving in (omigod lines not caves) .

I also do facial exercises for a few years now. Oh yeh one more TV thing that was for real (video). They help alot too.

Getting lots of exercise and fresh air also helps you to look young (oxygen).

Mainly because I refuse to grow up no one will ever guess how old I really am.

ps. want to do something nice for yourself? Start drinking **** berry and/or Goji berry juice. It is amazing how they cleanse your system of toxins (antioxidant) and leave a nice glow on your face! Blueberries and all berries really are antioxidents to some degree.

They are berry, berry good for you!

I look way older. I have thinning gray hair and a gray beard. I'm constantly asked how old my grandson is (he's my son!) and most of his friends ask him if I'm his grandpa....

Vanity indeed. Though I have been taking side glances at the just for men products in CVS - especially after a bad week of 'grandpa' questions :-)

I'll probably just shave the beard. My avatar photo is me sans beard.

I use to say Women worry more about it than men - but at my age (46), I see a lot of my male friends and acquaintances dying their hair now, they just try to hide it more than women.

          I don't look a day over 35, eventhough l am around the 45 mark!

This is because of Pilates, and other things, etc.

A tip to anyone who wants shiny skin, ditch the breakfast cereal and milk, and have a bowel of fruit, and nuts, (banana, with apple or kiwi, etc, nuts and honey) one week and you will notice a difference.

Although initially, you may have a headache, runny nose, etc?

Shay- I would say it's about self esteem and the media. Everywhere you go on TV, magazines, you see "perfect" looking ppl. Plus if someone passes for 10 yrs younger it makes em feel good.

Sista P and how old ARE you?

Sal I am horrible at age guessing but I wouldn't have guessed that.

I would play a game guess my age but I would have to kill everyone who guessed a number I didn't like so that's not a good idea at all. I'm not ready to spend the rest of my life in jail.

That is one reason, but not the right one. We have been taught that vanity is bad - BULL.
Your skin wasn't just slapped on you to give others something to look at. Skin is an ORGAN - and the largest one at that.
Great looking skin is healthy skin, and a lot of what needs to be done to keep great skin integrity is healthy for your whole body. If your skin is sagging and ill toned you have more than a skin problem - you have systems breaking down. So forget every bit of guilt you ever had over being a bit vain and take CARE of yourself for Gods sake what is wrong with that?

As far as the magazine look - it's true. Better looking people get the best advantages in society. Fair? Maybe and maybe not. Take a look at those people and what do they have that you don't? I bet some of you have prettier eyes, straighter noses, fuller lips, better cheekbones than most models. What they have is severe, hard core, health - and it shows. Sure you can get a facelift - but ya know what? If you had skin integrity in the first damned place you wouldn't need a facelift so if you don't change your ways afterward it's all gonna just fall again - Timber sweety. Got 5-10 grand every few years for a new one? LOL.

Be VAin and be Proud of yourself and if you end up gorgeous because of it - don't let any jealous simple minded plain Jane make you feel guilty for it for one minute of your life.

Pat - you are so right about sunburning. But the sad thing is that people go too far the opposite direction. You NEED sunshine. It's the only source of Vit D3 and a lack of that will give you so many diseases you don't even want to think about it. Sunblock is severely carcinogenic. What to do? Expose your skin to the sun 10 - 15 minutes per side until you can take enough sun to not burn if you are exposed for hours. If you have gotten enough sun but still have to be in it -forget sunscreens. Zinc creams or heavy makeup foundations are much better for your skin - hats with big brims help, too. When I go out rock hunting, I wear or take a long sleeve shirt so I can roll the sleeves up or down at will, and long pants as well. I wear a bathing suit underneath and climb in the suit until I've had enough sun then put on long but light clothing.

And Shay - there's nothing wrong with looking older - one look at any woman and you can tell if she's a kid or an older woman . But there's nothing wrong with people not being able to put their finger on exactly how old you might be and it's exceptionally great to look and BE healthy at any age.

Shay you want to know why? Because women are supposed to be 'eye candy' - we have been born and bred that it is all about how we look.

We learn that it is really what you are inside, that is your true beauty, but don't bother telling that to anybody because they will never get close enough to learn about you unless you look good (or they can't get anybody that does)...

Of course the ultimate would be to be loved for WHO YOU ARE.

I know. Eye candy. It is a sad commentary about our society, but that's just me.

I am glad that I was not born beautiful. (I don't make paint peel when I walk by, but I am not going to stop traffic, either. ) I had to use my brains and skills to get ahead.

My daughter is gorgeous. (Yeah, I'm biased.) She is constantly told how pretty she is - while I emphasize to her how smart she is and how that is so much more important.

But our society values looks so much more than anything else (in women). I feel like I am fighting a losing battle.

Sal-I love sun. I didn't know about that D3 stuff but it's been my life long dream to move where it never gets cold. Where its nice and sunny and never cold.

And Sal I don't think you mentioned genetics. Unfortunately some ppl are born with bad genes. Some are born with good. And nothing you can do can change your genes. Just like some ppl are born to have a face full of freckles. Just like the genes that determine your hair color or eye color. You can take the best care of what you have. But ppl with the best genes can take less care and wind up just as good as someone who is so vain and obsessive over taking care of themselves.

    The Sunshine Vitamin
    • Super-potent bone nutrition
    • Works to absorb and use calcium efficiently
    • Each capsule supplies 1,000 IU of vitamin D-3
Most people know that bones need a healthy supply of calcium to stay strong, but what many don't realize is that the body must have adequate vitamin D in order to absorb and use calcium efficiently.

The body manufactures some vitamin D on its own when it is exposed to sunlight, but for people living in the northern latitudes where wintertime sun exposure is limited, the body's natural vitamin D may often be insufficient.

Our High Potency Vitamin D-3 capsules tackle this problem by supplying an impressive 1,000 IU of vitamin D-3, the most biologically active fraction of vitamin D.

      Pat, hold your lawsuit

      "Dietary supplements
In supplements and fortified foods, vitamin D is available in two forms, D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is manufactured by the UV irradiation of ergosterol in yeast, and vitamin D3 is manufactured by the irradiation of 7-dehydrocholesterol from lanolin and the chemical conversion of cholesterol [11]. The two forms have traditionally been regarded as equivalent based on their ability to cure rickets, but evidence has been offered that they are metabolized differently. Vitamin D3 could be more than three times as effective as vitamin D2 in raising serum 25(OH)D concentrations and maintaining those levels for a longer time, and its metabolites have superior affinity for vitamin D-binding proteins in plasma [6,32,33]. Because metabolite receptor affinity is not a functional assessment, as the earlier results for the healing of rickets were, further research is needed on the comparative physiological effects of both forms. Many supplements are being reformulated to contain vitamin D3 instead of vitamin D2 [33]. Both forms (as well as vitamin D in foods and from cutaneous synthesis) effectively raise serum 25(OH)D levels [6]."

Swanson is way cheaper than anywhere else and they are cutting edge on homeopathics, herbs, etc.

They also have a few good organic foods - I get their organic walnuts, raisins, dried persian apricots - they have raw cashews.

Have you heard about Stevia? It is not recognized as a sweetner by the FDA (so what else is new) but is completely natural and been used for decades with no harm - I forget what it always was used for, but it essentially lowers your glycemic index substantially.

So it is actually more than a sugar replacement -- it is a blood sugar reducer - and it's sweet!

Guess I can finally listen to people and stop with the Splenda which is the only artificial sweetner I can stand. I feel guilty everytime I use it (not alot) and I hear Sal talking about the chlorine.

I also feel remorse when I microwave my Healthy Choice 'plates' (black) for the 120th time and I hear Sal's voice of reason. I am getting better at throwing them out when they get warped.

I have one OCD/fetish I guess and that is that I can't throw out anything plastic that can be used again.

I have hundreds of plastic containers, dishes, etc. I have cupboards full of dishes but never use them - hey cool whip bowls are totally cool.

Anybody need 1000 plastic shopping bags?

Annnoyed Girl - good genes aren't the help they used to be. With all the poisons we are all exposed to daily now even good genes are under attack and need special care. Look at the fluoride in our water - that will age you so fast that it will make your head spin - it breaks down collagen very rapidly. There are two types of collagen - fibrous, which is what skin and connective tissues need, and crystaline which helps in the construction of bone - fluoride in as little as 1 ppm (parts per million) will confuse the body and it will start crystalizing fibrous collagen. Not only that but the whole manufacturing process goes out of whack. We already get too much fluoride without the stuff they are sticking in our water - that is why it's being fought against tooth and nail now even as our leaders are trying to enforce it manditorily.

Then too - there is air pollution. Like that stuff sitting on your skin, absorbing into your pores, and into your cells? How bout toxins in your own home - most care and cleaning products off the shelf have some and they do your skin organ, nor any others, any favors.

Good genes or not - you need protection.

Shay - yes we can see by your pic that you aren't 18 anymore - but that closeup avatar of yours didn't show any wrinkling, splotches, eruptions, etc.
Either it was a good pic or you still have great skin. Keep it that way. I couldn't have told your age, just that you weren't a kid and were younger than I.

Sounds like you are getting all of your care advice from care product manufacturer's media. Need to cut that out or they'll be calling you Grandma Moses by the time you hit my age.
Sunblock is one of the worst things you can do for your skin - and the rest of your body, too. Your skin is absorbent so it is just sucking up all those carcinogenics in the block and spreading it around your body all while cutting off the body's ability to assimilate Vit D.

It has carcenogenic chemicals and it blocks the body's abilities to assimilate Vitamin D3 (which can lead to 11 different cancers and a few other tragic diseases, as well as premature age) and it messes up your body's melatonin production as well. You hear people bitching about "can't sleep" - and some even take bottled melatonin (which eventually will mess you up too) -all they need is to wash off the darned sunblock and go outside for fifteen or twenty minutes.

My site is down now - but I'll let people know when it's up and you can read the report on Sunshine and sunblock -- all of the references at the end are high quality medical doctors and reputable medical associations and research organizations.

I never knew that about sunblock, although I admit that I've never taken much notice when told that I should be using it. My trouble is that I've never taken much of the 'good' advice either.

I actually do a lot to keep myself looking healthy. Most people guess that I'm 8 years younger than what I am. I think it's just good genes. :-)

However, I'm happy with my age. When people tell me that I'm getting old, I just tell them that there are plenty of people in this world who wish they'd made it to be my age.

Here are a few of my anti-aging techniques.
    1. Exercise every morning for an hour.
    2. Drink plenty of water.
    3. Strict diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein.
    4. Cleanse, Tone, Exfoliate, and Moisturize twice a day, faithfully.
    5. Floss daily.
    6. Take a Multi- Mineral Multi- Vitamin daily

    That's all.

I guess I attribute it my wonderful genetic ability to start losing my hair at the ripe old age of 17. Yea, really. I guess I'm just lucky.

I am "getting on a bit" but don't look my age. Luckily I tan easily and so have avoided the prune look.

I've got to say I've noticed a lot more of my male friends being into anti aging stuff lately. One has a bathroom cupboard full of stuff!

All I use is some dove soap (I know I'm bad) but most shop stuff gives me a rash and some nivea moisturiser. I do drink loads of water (balanced equally with loads of coffee ) and eat healthy foods. I exercise regularly by moving the mouse around on its mat The avatar is me but I have make up on and rarely look like that!

My one regret is the teen fad of smothering yourself in coconut oil and lying on tin foil to get a tan. The tan has long gone but the age spots are starting to come

I agree with a lot of what HeySal said and I know I'm not the only one that wants to know what she knows so maybe when her site is back we'll all get PMs cause I don't know which web site of hers that is.

Okay, my long answer with my thoughts.

As for me I don't think that for the most part there is such a thing as "looking your age" unless you are a baby, child or young teenager or considerably chronologically old - and even in those later years you could look 10 to 20 years younger, some people even more. It's all relative.

Whoever said they look 40 because they are 40 doesn't get it (by the way, I don't think 40 is old - it's not even though people act that way). You are gauging the way you look by what most 40 year olds look like and so actually you don't look 40 but perhaps rather what it truthfuly is is that you think you look typical for your age.

I think it's important to make that distinction because although we are all programmed to die we waren't programmed to degrade to so quickly. It's caused by outside factors. I believe that in the ideal environment there is no reason why most 40 year olds can't look like most people 20 years younger.

The problem is bad habits, polluted and toxic environment and crap in the food and water that causes people to degrade much faster. You can be chronologically "old" (which is relative to the average life expectancy) and not be aged.

When I was 24 I was mistaken often for about 16 or 17. I generally looked younger than what people would expect me to look like at my age - but I started smoking at about 20 and it caught up to me visibly at about 25 and at around 28 people now thought I was anywhere from 35 to 45, not that this is old, it isn't but I didn't want to hear that. It wasn't just the smoking it was also mega stress and malnutrition but I think the smoking was mostly the culprit.

That doesn't stop 19 year old chicks from giving me 'attention' (that's reassuring) but it was no fun to be hearing from people who are in their early to late 40s telling me stuff like "Remember when we had bla bla bla"... and I'm all like "Um, NO I DON'T" and I'd be pissed. Not cause I think that's old but it didn't help with my premature aging complex.

What I thought odd was that even though I got that from people sometimes there were always some who would underguess my age. So I think a lot of "what does X age look like" is individual perception. Even though I would get pissed when people over guessed my age it told me something was not right and I started thinking what I could do about it - because the way I looked was not the only thing : I felt horrible.

As far as sun I think there has to be more to it. I'm no expert, but when I lived in Portugal I saw many people and particularly older people who were darker from working out in fields and being in the blazing sun every day. In their 60s most did not have that prune, sagging, wrinkled bulldog look and they didn't ever use sunscreen. I don't know if the diet helped protect them from the sun and I'm not saying that if you looked at their skin under a microscope you wouldn't see damage but visibly they looked healthy, their skin was smooth and they weren't covered in wrinkles. So, go figure. My own aunts, the ones that are in their late 50s and 60s, while they don't look like teenagers have fairly smooth skin and don't look like bulldogs. Maybe it's all the olive oil.

I'm still trying to figure all this out and find the right protocol for me, including what I eat (I've already determined through trial and error that a vegan or vegetarian diet does not work for me and that the one size fits all nutrition protocol is a lot of baloney. As soon as I made at least half of my diet animal protein and plenty of good fats I lost weight and felt way better). I'm no expert and there's lots I don't know but I feel determined to get this figured out. I still have bad habits and a lot of what I can do is limited by my budget.

But now sometimes people think I'm in my early 20's or even in my late teens, which is about 10 years or so younger than I am, so at least now I may be on to something and when I figure it out maybe people will think that every day.

Sometimes people tell me why I bother doing stuff and being all into finding out about stuff like colloidal silver, blood electrification, colon cleansing, food grade H2O2, supplements and stuff because I'm still young and the answer is "Because prevention is the best medicine" so it's never too early to start doing these things. Some people in this topic don't seem to care and that's okay but you could probably reverse that graying, balding head and make yourselves feel heaps better and then your improved appearance would just be a nice side effect. Maybe you could look at it as looking/feeling better and not so much as looking younger. Besides, even though people usually call it looking younger I think what they usually really mean is looking better. Looking younger isn't necessarily better. A lot of young people look like crap. In my case most of what I am doing is just to reverse the damage from smoking.

It's not all about wrinkles either. I've seen teenagres with wrinkles. Fine lines and some wrinkles isn't even the worst. There's more to it like losing the sub cutaneous fat under your skin and other things. Topical treatments can do a lot of harm if you use the wrong stuff and most stuff is probably the wrong stuff. Some topical products may even give short term positive results but may make you look older in the long run. Be careful what you choose if you want to reverse certain signs and remember that most of what you do to improve comes from inside out and not from what you do on the outside.

I don't think it's wrong to be into this stuff (I wouldn't call it vanity necessarily - that depends on what a person's intention is and besides everything is vanity anyway) because really how healthy you are inside will reflect outwardly. If your insides are well oiled and your brain is healthy that by itself is going to make you look younger outwardly. Your body needs to be able to carry out the trash and it can't when it's breaking down like an old car no matter how much gunk you put on your face.

I also think there is a disgusting disease that runs rampant in the world, which I call "youth worship" - youth being applauded for their youth, told they are children which just keeps them immature and childish for as long as possible when there is no reason they couldn't be men and women at least by the time they are 18, they mention their youth often in pride and arrogance, wear it like a badge and use it as an excuse while at the same time the world calls other people after X arbitrary age "old" well before their time.

People have these paradigms where they section off people by age groups and dare make people who are not even old feel as if they are and like they are undesirable in most capacities and good for almost nothing according to their baseless way of thinking. People need to break out of that and, even though it's hard to hold a "young" self view when the world won't leave you alone and there are reminders everywhere reminding you how "old" you are, you have to keep a different outlook and not let that get to you cause that by itself will make you get older quicker.

It breaks my heart when I see a 45 year old or whatever broken and given up saying things like "Oh, I'm just old now" and with a body language that screams "I'm beaten". That person is brainwashed. IF I can get along with the person and be their friend I treat them like a peer to help them feel better about themselves in case it helps to make them feel less old and maybe in conversations I try to undo the brainwashing. Heck, when I was 18 most of my friends were over 40. I just don't see what difference it makes and now about 10 years later I'll be friends with anyone if I like them and I don't treat them any differently unless I sense a boundary.

This is why I HATE it when I see sales letters that say "17 year old kid makes $5000 a day" or "63 year old man makes $10,000 a week". I'm all like "Yea, so? Thanks for the information and how is that relevant to anything?" They always use extremes. That's just saying the 17 year old is a stupid child so isn't it interesting that EVEN THEY can make $5000 a day and the 63 year old is so old and slow but EVEN THEY can make $10,000 a week.

    I RESENT that VERY MUCH.

Anyway, good luck to everyone and just "be your age" if you that's what you want whatever that means, but you might find that if you truly did just "act your age" you would probably act younger than you do.

    Stream of conscious rant over.

But my wife will be 50 this year. She can easily pass for thirty. She just uses over the counter cream - not sure which ones. Might be Oil of Old Lady or Olay or whatever it is.
